Relevant Observation on the Effect of Metaphor / Analogy / Simile on Your
house layout or design
Almost all designs proceed by transforming, combining and adapting elements and
objects to find a creative idea. Pioneers of the scientific study of creativity have often
defined creativity in terms of the capacity to produce new or original ideas. Ideas are
developed in the mind, while also exploiting various external representations. They
are thoughts, conceptions that serve us to reason with.
Everything can be a source of inspiration to designers. They use a variety of
references: comparable designs; other types of design; images and works of art; and
objects and phenomena from nature and everyday life . It‟s obvious that architecture
products require creativity. To enhance this aim, designers use different kinds of
principles and tools such as metaphors, analogy and simile.
Metaphors and Simile simplify the generation of innovative solutions, essentially in
earlier stages of the design process . Metaphorical reasoning helps to use artistic
and technological knowledge and increases the assessment of various design
solutions, and improves design outcomes by encouraging reflection on design
problems anew . From a cognitive opinion, metaphors and simile are considered as
a respected problem solving strategy . They can enable the structuring of a problem
situation from a novel viewpoint that is mostly important for creative activities like
design .
Analogy, which refers to similarity between relationships, is of particular importance
because in its most complete state it establishes structural commonalties, in addition
to surface features that are carried over to a new situation by other types of similarity
as well.

Understanding the cognitive processes involved in the formation of metaphors and
analogies is important for understanding and improving the design process. Analogy
and metaphor can be viewed as a mapping of knowledge from one situation to
another enabled by a supporting system of relations or representations between
situations.
I am firmly convinced to these principles ,especially that it is really a very big factor in
creativity and it is a fundamental ingredient in designing a structure .It reveals how
innovative a single person in creating a design out of different inspirations.
After conducting relevant observations,in regards to the effect of metaphor ,analogy
and simile in our house layout and design,I can say that this principles were very
important .Knowing its effect on a home mesmerize me. It makes a home an ideal
place to live in.It makes a home beautiful in its own way. You can see inspiration and
innovation ,in each detail, inside and outside, and how it is built.

For instance,our home’s exterior was inspired by a typical bungalow house ,that is
very relevant and timely here in Philippines.Its interior however has a modern
approach .All in all ,it’s a combination of traditional and modern approach,and I can
tell that its very innovative to combine two styles that unexpectedly complement
each other.Now ,where are the application of those principles ?Metaphorically,it’s the
question “What it is like to have a home with two style approach?”.Analogically it’s
the question “What style approach can we get an inspiration?” It undergoes the
stages of design process,and this principles were an important part of it ,until the
target design was done.Now our home is beautiful,the design and colors
complement each other and its an ideal home for me.
The principle of metaphor and simile is very evident, same as with analogy, and I
think that this is also applicable in every home we’re living. Either its luxurious or not,
big or small, spacious or narrow, and even the materials used were different , the
application of these principles were still there .Its like the spirit of every structure.
Knowing this principles is very wonderful to me.It is one of the building blocks to
arrive with a beautiful and creative design ,just like in our home.It is very beneficial
and it is better if all of us aspiring architects were aware of this wonderful
cocncept.This is the reason why we witness magnificent structures all around the
world including the homes we’re living in.
