Museum Application + Show

SOI: Perspective can be expressed and structured through writing to a wide audience,
impacting them in different ways.

Background Info: Museums are institutions that house the tangible, touchable history of
both people and humanity. Teachers often arrange field trips to museums to enhance the
lessons being taught in the classroom. Artifacts— which are man-made objects with a
purpose, include tools, models, photographs, and writings—can provide insight into the lives
and circumstances surrounding particular people or events. They help us remember.

You need to convince the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum that

at the new exhibit for others to experience.
You have an important item belonging to a connection you knew who

Step by Step Guide:

1. As you read the novel Night, identify as many artifacts/objects and quotes from the
text that are symbolic of memorable moments in Wiesel’s life. Compile an ongoing
list of possible “pieces” for your museum.
2. Decide on your contribution. It should represent an important development of a
character and be supported with quotes and specific language from the novel. Your
topic needs to be approved before you begin! There can be no overlap. No matter
what topic you choose, you will need to support it with evidence and language from
the novel.
3. Plan: Compile all the relevant information to your contribution in one place. Identify
which elements most strongly support your application to donate this piece to the
museum.
4. Create: Produce your artifact.
5. Outline: Organize your information into an appropriate application (report outline will
be provided as a guide)
6. Rough Draft: In your notebook, by hand, draft your application to the museum.
7. Edit: This is an important application. Make sure you have fully edited and revised it
before submitting to the museum!
8. Good Copy: Produce and publish your good copy to ManageBac.
9. USHMM Display: On a designated date, the classroom will become an interactive
display for the museum. You will present your artifact and explain its importance to
any visitors who attend. Hint: Visitors may include Mr. Swanson, so be prepared!
a. There will be NO extensions. The display date, once determined, is finite. If
you do not come to school that day, you will receive a 0 for Criteria D.

Tips for writing a Report


- Use the active voice and be aware of your tone
- Be direct. Make it very clear that your item should be in the museum
- Use specific examples and avoid generalities
- Use subheadings to organize the sections
- Make sure everything you include is relevant to the purpose of the report

Presentation
You will need to present your item/topic and information during a special museum show
during which you will need to explain what your item is and why it is important to attendees
for an hour. You should communicate verbally and organically with your audience to answer
their questions.

- A short speech that highlights the most important elements of your application
