A. Readings/Discussions

Introduction

In reality, there exist quantities which has

relationships with other quantities.

For example, the relationship between time and

distance as a jetliner changes altitude as its
distance from the starting point.

The relationship between the number of

months and the increase in weight and height
of a child as it grows.

We can observe in each case; one quantity is

dependent on another quantity. There is a
relationship between the two quantities that we
can describe, analyze, and use to make
predictions.

In this module, we will analyze such

relationships.

RELATION AND FUNCTION

RELATION

A relation is a set of ordered pairs. The set consisting of the first components of each ordered pair is called the
domain and the set consisting of the second components of each ordered pair is called the range.

Example of an ordered pair:

The ordered pair between time and distance as a jetliner flies.

(time , distance)

The ordered pair between number of months and weight of a growing baby.

(number of months , weight)

(number of months , height)

Example of Relation:

If we list down all the ordered pair between time and distance as a jetliner flies we have,

Time (in minutes) 2 4 8 16

Distance (in meters) 250 500 750 1000

So the Relation (set of ordered pairs) is

{ ( 2 , 250 ) , ( 4 , 500 ) , ( 8 ,750 ) ,(16 , 1000) }

The set consisting of the first components {2, 4, 8, 16} is called the Domain.
The set consisting of the second components {250, 500, 750, 1000} is called the Range.

FUNCTION

A function is a relation where each element in the domain is related to only one value in the range by some rule.

A function is a set of ordered pairs ( x , y ) such that no two ordered pairs have the same x-value (input) but different y-
values (output). The input values make up the Domain, and the output values make up the Range. We say “the
output is a function of the input.”

Illustration:

The Mang Inasal menu, shown below, consist of food items and prices.

PM1 Php 95.00

PM2
Php 99.00
PM3

SM1
Php 49.00
SM2

Using functional notation, we can write f (x)= y , read as “ f of x is equal¿ y .” In particular, if (1 , 2) is an ordered pair
associated with the function f, then we say that f (2)=1.

B. Exercise

Graph the system of inequalities.

x>3
{ y ≤−x+2
C. Assessment/Application/Outputs (Please refer to DepEd Order No. 31, s. 2020)

1. Suppose you only have 250 pesos left and you need to buy acrylic paint which cost 70 pesos and a
paint brush which cost 12 pesos.

a. What mathematical statement would represent the total cost of the two materials?
1. Show in a graph the possible set of solutions regarding the number of acrylic paint and paint brush
that is enough for 250 pesos.

2. Graph the system of inequalities.

x + y >3
{2 x−5 y ≤1
x≥0

D. Suggested Enrichment/Reinforcement Activity/ies

If smartphone and internet connection is available, you can download “GEOGEBRA” application in google
play and start checking inequalities and its graphs in the application.

GUIDE

For the Teacher

The Self – Learning Home Task (SLHT) aims to surpass the challenges of teaching in a new normal education set-up.
Through SLHT, the students are given independent learning activities that embody in the Curriculum Guide based on
the K-12 Curriculum, to work on according to their capability, efficiency, and time. Thus, helping the learners acquire
the prerequisite 21st Century skills needed with the emphasis on utmost effort in considering the whole well-being of
the learners.

For the Learner

The Self – Learning Home Task (SLHT) is specially crafted for you to grasp the opportunity to continue learning even
at home. Using guided and independent learning activities, rest assured that you will be able to take pleasure as well as
to deeply understand the contents of the lesson presented; recognizing your capacity and capability in acquiring
knowledge.

For the Parent/Home Tutor

The Self – Learning Home Task (SLHT) is constructed for the leaners to understand the chance to continue learning
even at home. By means of straight forward learning activities, rest assured that your learner/s will be able to take
preference as well as to deeply understand the context of the lesson and activities presented; recognizing the learners’
capacity and skill in getting information.
