Chapter 1
The Problem and Its Background
Introduction and Its Background Study
Reading comprehension is the ability to process text, understanding it’s meaning, and to
integrate with what the reader already knows but one of the major problems for high school
students nowadays is they have reading comprehension difficulties where they are not fully
developed in their reading ability, they are not proficient where it comes in their reading skills.
Bahri (2016) stated that the student is lack of vocabularies, not interested in reading, and
lack of direct speech. Parents and Teachers must be aware of this kind of situation especially to
those students who doesn’t learn fast. Help them to learn and understand all the things that
surrounds on them. This paper is focus on what are the important and relevant things that the
students need and to help them reach the reading ability that is appropriate to their age and
personality.
According to Davis (2016), reading is very important in our lives especially for student’s
life because reading can make a big difference to all students who wants to express themselves in
reading and Davis said that reading can develop their mind, imagination, and perception to the
things that is very useful to students to give a better solution for it.
If the students take reading seriously there are effects that can enhanced their ability to
read and it can affect not only for themselves but in their daily life like our education and dignity
to face all of the struggles that they will experience in the future. And if there are students need
to enhance their performance in reading they need motivation to their loved ones to encourage
them to improve their reading comprehension skills.
Researchers dedicate to all readers is to let them know that cooperation is the best way.
Cooperation is the key to the problems, it is not only in our self-actions but also for parent and
teachers cooperate their child/students to motivate them to be proficient and enhance their
reading comprehension ability up to the next level. The benefits of this study to the readers is to
let them know what are the possible outcomes.
Researchers motivate to choose this topic because there are still students are not sensible
in their perception in reading the text in a book what they read. Researchers also motivate this
topic because there are still some parents and teachers have a deficiency in guiding their children
to learn how to read and understand the content if the text.
The only target of this research is let them learned the value of reading and how helpful
the motivation that is derived from the elder persons who teach them how to be a responsible on
what are the things to make them a better person.
Statement of the Problem
There are lot of students in this world but some of them have a difficulty where it comes
in reading skills. So as researchers, we prepared some questionnaire for the respondents to find
out what are the efficient way for this kind of situation and what are the things that can help to
improve and enhance their reading skills. Here is the preferred research questionnaire that is part
of the research study:
1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:
Age
Grade Level
INPUT PROCESS OUTPUT
Gender
2. Who influence the respondents to read?
It focuses on how 3. How the students motivated to read?
they enrich their
reading ability and 4. What are the important roles of the following to enhance
what are the
important things they their reading ability:
need to make them
more engaged in The student
reading.
The parent
5. How the respondents enhance their reading
comprehension?
Conceptual Framework
This conceptual framework indicates that there are some ways that we can do to make
ourselves motivated to read and enhance our ability in reading.
Significance of this Study
This research will help them to know how reading motivation were effective to student’s
reading skills and to find out the reasons on why the students experience reading difficulties and
what are the things that the student needs to have an improvement in their reading ability. These
are the following persons that can be benefited:
Students
The students will know that reading is very important to their life in present, any kinds of
difficulties they experience especially the high school students who pass their grade level even
though they are not proficient in reading. They will also know the effect of reading if they not
take it seriously
Parents
The parents will realize that they have an important role to their child. Motivate them to
improve their skills in reading and get interested in books to avoid reading difficulties and
encourage them to focus on their child until they read fluently and understand what they read.
Teacher
Teachers will realize that they have a heavy job in this situation. They must check their
student every semester if the student can read fluently and can explain what does it mean. They
must try to help students also build a good personality for their better future.
Scope and Limitations
This research will focus on the strategies on how to prevent reading difficulties in the
students. This will let the readers to know how important reading is, and to think some strategies
on how they prevent their reading difficulties where it comes in literacy and how to encourage
the students in their reading skills.
The researchers analyzed and evaluates all of the information that is relevant in the topic.
The research instrument that we use are our preferred research questionnaire. We limited the
number of students that we are going to interview to conduct this research. Therefore,
researchers choose 30 students of TCIHS from grade 7-10 as our respondents because there are
some students not only in Grade 7 have reading difficulties but also the other grade levels in high
school.
This study is designed to have a full encouragement in reading skills and how it will help
them prevent difficulties in reading and help them to read fluently. Also, to know how important
reading motivation for students.

Chapter II
Review and Related Literature
This chapter reviews some of the relevant existing Literature on Reading Comprehension.
Defined Reading Comprehension
There are so many definitions of reading. It is said that reading is a process to get, to
know, to understand, and to catch the content of reading.
According to Smith (2011), reading comprehension is a creative and constructive activity
having four distinctive and fundamental characteristics. Reading comprehension may be
regarded as relating aspects of the world around us including what we read to the knowledge,
intentions, and expectations.
Reading covers a lot of things. It does not simply know the meaning of individual words
in a particular text. According to Birsch (2011), defined reading comprehension is the ability to
get the meaning from what they read. Reading comprehension needs different reading skills such
as word recognition, fluency, lexical knowledge and preexisting knowledge.
The students also seemed to have difficulties in vocabulary. They are so struggle to
translate every single word in the text when they actually try guessing the meaning of the
context. Regarding to the problems found at the school, some possible ways are proposed to
solved them. Predicting can facilitate the students to guess the meaning from context.
Importance of Reading Comprehension
Although many children can read, the act of reading and the act at reading and act of
comprehending what you read are two different things. Reading requires the fluent parsing and
blending various phonetic sounds to create words. Reading Comprehension, on the other hand,
involves thinking about the words that were just read and deriving a meaning. In other words,
reading comprehension is the ability to read, understand, process, and recall what was just read.
Sarah Rutzler (2020), proved that without proper comprehension skills, students are lack of
ability to understand what they read. The point of reading isn't to make sounds in your brain or
out loud, but rather to understand important lessons, stories, and arguments. Through the act of
writing, our ancestors have recorded the important knowledge that we can understand simply by
reading. By understanding what we read, we pick up the important information.
In Layman's terms, having an excellent reading comprehension skill is crucial. It increases
the enjoyment and effectiveness of reading and helps not only academically, but professionally,
and in a person's personal life.
Overtime, as you lovingly help them to see the importance of the comprehension, and pour
through endless stories together, you'll see your child learn the steps that takes to understand
what they read-- slowly, and then all at once
Building Reading Comprehension Skills
Comprehension is actually quite simple to build. However, it will require daily, active
involvement from the parents or guardian, where you guide your child through the thought
process that underly understanding any text. Processes like daily reading practices where all
children should spend at least half hour daily, reading with their love ones. Not only to make
faster the positive relationship with reading, but it also allows you to model the cognitive steps
required to comprehend your reading skills.
According to Smith (2011), it is important to check the understanding for building our
reading comprehension skills, whether you or your child reads a book. Ask key comprehension
questions periodically like the 4 W's (What, Where, Who, When). also, the word "How”, while
reading.
Montgomery (2016) said that making connections, creating visual, making inferences and
predictions and fixing any type of confusion can build our ability in reading because it is
important to go back and re-read as soon as your child seems confused.
Remember, Osewalt (2017) stated that your daily reading practice (especially when you
want to give up) and remind your child that it is important to understand every single
word/sentences/paragraph/ story they read.
Motivation – to – Read
In this study, Guthrie, Coddington, and Wigfield (2010), affirmed the importance of the
motivation in reading by expressing that, while reading achievement is important, a major aim
for the student reading should to be faster life - long readers.
Guthrie, Coddington, and Wigfield (2010), acknowledge that the motivation is positively
correlated to reading achievement. Conversely, avoidant motivation has been negatively
correlated to reading achievement.
In a relatable study, Solheim (2011) posited that there is a strong relationship between
motivation - to - read and reading comprehension.
According to Wigfield (2011), reading engagement is the combined operation if
motivational and cognitive processes. The implication for the motivating instruction is especially
important for secondary SWD who still struggle to gain meaning from what they read
Synthesis
The literature and studies of this research are gathered all the facts as a instrument to
conduct this chapter. The Defined Reading Comprehension, the importance of it, the way for
Building our Reading Comprehension and The Motivation- to - read is conducted in this study to
prove how effectiveness of reading motivation to enhanced students' reading comprehension
skills in the students of TCIHS.
For the defined reading comprehension, Smith (2011), Birsch (2011), Tompkins (2011)
are having the same definitions of the reading, they say that it is the one of the important skills
that students need to make them more engaged in reading and how is the ability to know what
the context all about.
For the importance of reading comprehension, Sarah Rutzler (2020) and Layman's agreed
with the same thing that students without proper reading comprehension, student is lack to
comprehend on the text where they did not understand the meaning of the text and they have the
same words that reading comprehension is crucial for the students.
For the building our skills, all of the authors like Smith (2011), Montgomery (2016) and
Osewalt (2017) stated that there some ways to build students reading ability and one of the things
is the motivation because motivation – to – read is very important especially for the students and
they said that if we motivate the students to read it will make the students to understand every
single word of the text.
The related studies that the researchers conduct serves as a proof that motivating a
students’ can enhanced their reading comprehension.
Chapter III
Methodology
This chapter presents the nature of the study in terms of research design, research
respondents, data gathering instrument and data gathering process.
Research Design
The researchers used descriptive qualitative design to gather the opinion and experience
of the respondents to the problem. This research allows to investigate the meanings that the
Respondents attributes to their behavior, action and interactions with others. The key attributes
and value of qualitative description research in the physical facilities will be highlighted with the
aim by extending its usage.
The research paper will be a qualitative research that shows the study will use as a guide
to the respondents. The researchers conduct a survey and a question for the respondents in a semi
structure. Therefore, their answer will be reliable source in the future making of the research use.
The main objective of this research is to know the importance and benefits of reading
comprehension. The researchers will analyze all of the situations that the respondents about their
reading difficulties and to explore the cause of this problem.
Respondents of the Study
The respondent’s population of the study are going to be at least 30 from grade 7-10 of
TCIHS in the year of 2020. The student can answer the survey using their experiences in reading
comprehension. The researchers will pick respondents carefully.
Research Instruments
The research instrument that has been use for the study is a survey
questionnaire/interview for the students who had difficulties in reading and to know them more
about to their opinion in reading comprehension.
The survey questionnaire is focus on the statement of the problem that were made by
researchers for the specific respondents with the acknowledgement of the adviser also. When the
questionnaire is approved and ready to give for the respondents, researcher find their respondents
by using observation to choose respondents only
Validation of the Research Instrument
To console the validity of the questionnaire, the researchers presented it to education
authorities and recommendation were considered. Some sorts of modifications were done as
pointed out by the research adviser and the evaluators. Thereafter, the researcher proceeded in
the gathering of the needed data after all necessary modifications in the instruments.
Data Gathering Procedure
To complete this study, a set of survey questionnaire conducted by the researchers for the
respondents. Before the researchers conduct this study, they ask their adviser for permission and
to the respondents Moreover, the researchers seen to determine the possible respondents for the
study.
During the conduct of questionnaire, the researchers ask the respondents first that our set
of questionnaires will only let know some information about them and will not use in
unappropriated matter. All the data is kept and recorded accordingly to the researchers. To
accomplish the study, the researchers made a survey questions all about reading comprehension
and difficulties. The gather information will see the result in the chapter four. The researchers
will analyze every answer regarding to the topic. The researchers use different kind of
descriptive term for the answer of respondents and interpretation and analyzing of data from the
researchers’ survey are also done to answer the statement of the problem.
