A Critique Paper on the Artwork, Starry Night

Starry Night is one of the most well-known painting both in the past and present. This
painting is the most famous artwork created by Vincent Van Gogh, a Dutch post-impressionist
painter, on June of 1889. The artwork is a moderately abstract painting located at the Museum of
Modern Art in New York City since 1941. The painting depicts the view from Van Gogh’s window
of his asylum room at Saint-Remy-de-Provence before sunrise.

The Starry Night painting is commonly interpreted by many people in terms of its meaning
and importance. It arouses deep emotions within the viewers as well. The artwork express strong
emotions of hope through the bright lights of the stars and the moon gleaming towards the dark
scenery at night. Van Gogh had used exaggerated and expressive brushstrokes in order to visualize
his emotions and display personal feelings. The brushstrokes used to dramatize the motions of the
stars, clouds and moon depicts Van Gogh’s hopes and dreams. The bright lights in the sky gives
the village a comfort of hope. As Van Gogh painted the Starry Night, emotions of isolation and
insanity underlie which relates to how he was struggling due to his mental illness. He had also
considered this painting as a failure; a failed attempt at abstraction. Starry Night was painted in
the course of a sad period in Van Gogh’s life, making it unsurprising that the artist portrayed his
emotions on the painting. One of the secrets of this painting is that the Starry Night may be about
mortality. The village is peaceful compared to the dramatic night sky. However, the darkness of
the village refers to death, which suggests that he is contrasting both life and death in his work.

Despite of the dark village at night in the painting, it is still possible to see the light of hope
through the stars as it shines from above. As a person who admires this artwork, I had felt the
emotions depicted by the artist. Starry Night is like a message for those people who are
experiencing or having difficulties in life, that there is still hope amidst the darkest of times.
Nevertheless, it is still up to the people on how they will interpret and understand the meaning of
one of history’s greatest creation.
