LECTURE 1
ARTS OF MINDANAO
What are the arts of Mindanao?
As one of the largest islands in the Philippines, Mindanao is a melting pot of
tribes and cultures. The pioneer inhabitants, the Moro and the Lumad who resisted
the Spanish colonization, strongly retain the influence of the Malyo Polynesian arts
and culture.
BAGOBO and MANOBOS
What are the elements and principles that are used in the arts of Mindanao?
The Bagobos live in southeastern Mindanao, particularly in the Davao
regions. In imitating the metal artworks of the Moros (Muslim warriors), the tribe has
produced an ornate tradition in weaponry. The Bagobos also weave abaca cloths and
baskets.
The Manobos, on the other hand, live in many provinces of Mindanao like
Agusan del Sur, Bukidnon, Davao regions, North and South Cotabato, and Sarangani
Islands. The Manobos are also elaborately dressed among the ethnic tribal groups. The
word Manobo is the Hispanic form of Manuvu, which means “people.” The Manobos
are in the uplands of Sarangani Island, Agusan del Sur, Davao provinces, Bukidnon,
and North and South Cotabato.
What are the artworks of the Mandayas?
Another ethnic group in southern Mindanao known for their beautiful
clothing decorations are the Mandayas. They call their cloth dagmay. It is made of
vegetable-dyed abaca fibers which are tie-dyed. Various flora and fauna patterns are
visible in the dagmay.
Mandaya women wear dagum or cotton blouses. These blouses are decorated
with geometric and animal designs and are usually in red, black, and blue.
What are the pieces of jewelry of the Mandayas?
The Mandayas are well known for their colorful and beautiful earrings,
necklaces, bracelets, and more. The art elements of their metal and non-metal jewelry
are shown below.

5. Earrings or laog Non-metal, glass beads

7. Brass trinklet or Metal, brass

What influences the art of the ethnic groups in Mindanao?
The Lumads, just like other ethnic groups of Luzon and Visayas, are strongly
influenced by the Malayo-Polynesian arts. The influence is so strong that the plces of
the Lumads look like they are provincial extensions of our southern and eastern
neighboring countries-Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Polynesians Islands.
The T’boli, for instance, wear clothing made of t’nalak, and adorn themselves
with bronze, brass, and golden armlets and leglets. They speak a Malayo-Polynesian
language. The Tibolis of South Cotabato, live in “long houses” that are built with six-
foot stilts bamboo.
What are the artworks of the T’bolis of South Cotabato?
The T’bolis are noted for using t’nalak as their clothing. The t’nalak’s
distinctive and colorful clothing is a major source of ethnic pride of the T’bolis.
T’nalak is a red and beige designed clothing with various geometrical shapes on a
brown background.
TIRURAY
What are the art forms of the Tirurays?
The Tirurays occupy the Southwestern part of Mindanao. They weave
beautiful and strong baskets. Their craftsmanship and skills in weaving are
comparable with the T’boli tribe of Lake Sebu in South Cotabato. The tirurays are also
admired for their beautiful brass work for the heavy belts, chains, and noisy anklets
used by many of their women.
LECTURE 2
MUSLIM ART FORMS
What are some of the Muslims’ art forms?
Islamic traditions were first introduced to the Malays of the southern
Philippines in the 14th century. The dominant design of their artworks are okir and
sarimanok.
The okir design convey the figurative symbols of animals, plants, and mythical
figures. The okir style is highly decorative, with long curvilinear lines and

arasbesques designs. Another important motif is the sarimanok design. This design
shows a bird holding a fish in its beak or talons.
What are the characteristics of the arts and crafts in some areas in Muslim
Mindanao?
The artistry and fine craftsmanship of the Muslims who dwell in the western
and central part of Mindanao is no doubt an art form that Filipinos could be proud of.
It is truly an art Filipinos could call their own. The Tausugs of Sulu are excellent
artisans of fine Muslim textiles and metal works. While the Maranaos of Lanao are
skillful craftsmen and artists. The Maguindanaons of the Cotabato Province are skilled
weavers of fine mats and baskets while the Yakans of Sulu and Basilan are excellent
silk and cotton textile weavers. Their design of okir, torogan, lantaka, and sarimanok
are regarded as high-quality folk arts in Asia.
What are the artworks of the Tausugs?
The Tausugs or Joloanos are sometimes called the “people of the current.”
This is because many of them live near bodies of water where they could do fishing.
The Tausugs have their own version of Torogan. The torogan is the ancestral
home of Tausug leaders. It is a symbol of rank and prestige.
What are the artworks of the Marano?
The Maranao are also considered “the people of the lake.” This is because
many of them reside along the great Lanao Lake. The Maranaos are famous because of
their inherent artistry. Most of their arts and crafts were patterned after okir or okkil.
Okir design refers to the range of folk motifs, usually of plants and geometric forms.
Other Filipino Islamic arts are the burqa and the sarimanok. The burqa is a
winged horse with a head of a women. The sarimanok, on the other hand, symbolizes
nobility and bravery.
The torogan is the ancestral home of the highest titleholder in a Maranao
village. It can easily be distinguished because of its panolong- a carved beam that
protrudes in the front of the house and is adorned with okir motif.
The malong is a woven Maranao cloth. It is attractive because of its bright
colors and various designs like okir.
What are the artworks of the Maguindanao?
The Maguindanao are also called “people of the flood plain.” They live in a
flooded-prone area of the Cotabato Province, which is the catch-basin of the mighty
Rio Grande of Mindanao. Many of them engage in agriculture and fishing. They are
also known for their skill in weaving fine mats and baskets.

What are the artworks of the Yakan?
Aside from the Maranaos in the northernmost part of Mindanao, another
group of Muslims are the Yakans. Their means of livelihood is also mainly in
agriculture and fishing. They are also known to be excellent textile weavers. Their
cotton and silk textiles are remarkably designed with various geometric shapes and
colors.
LECTURE 3
ART AWARENESS
What makes design important in our lives?
Decorative arts furnish or beautify the spaces in which we live and adorn our
bodies. Among the decorative arts are textile and furniture design, metalwork, glass,
ceramics, and fashion design. Architects design buildings that convey the important
functions (for example, churches or banks) while fashion or clothing designers create
decorative designs for the body and the clothes we wear. We also value design in
furniture and other useful everyday objects and build monuments to honor our
heroes. That’s how important design in our lives.
What is the personal function of art?
Art serves as a means of personal expression. The choice of body adornments
such as bead jewelry, body tattoos, and headdresses indicate one’s personality and
social status.
What is the physical function of art?
Art also has its physical function. It is used to produce things that make lives
physically comfortable. Examples are tools and containers. Artists design objects to fit
with its intended use and aesthetic value that is pleasing to the user’s eyes.
