Gen Ed 12 Life Works of Rizal P PT1 - Lim Jan William

Rizal had a privileged upbringing as one of 11 children born to a wealthy family in the Philippines. He was educated at home by his mother from a young age, developing a love of reading. As a student, he attended Ateneo de Manila University where he excelled in his studies, then transferred to the University of Santo Tomas to study medicine. At both schools, he faced discrimination as a Filipino student under Spanish colonial rule. He was inspired to advocate for Philippine independence after witnessing the public execution of three Filipino priests as a child. Despite challenges, Rizal remained dedicated to his studies and used his experiences to fuel his nationalist writings later in life.

Gen Ed 12- Life and Works of Rizal

1. Describe the life of Rizal as a child. (150 words)

He was born as Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda, one of the 11 children of
Francisco Engracio Rizal Mercado y Alejandro and Teodora Morales Alonso y Quintos. His family was
well-off at that time.
His mother taught him how to read since the family had a large collection of books which led him
to develop love of reading and have thirst of knowledge. His mother also taught him to read from a
Spanish booklet, El Amigo de los Niños. Rizal’s mother kept on telling him stories, of the stories told by
Dona Teodora, Jose remembered the Story of the Moth. The tragic fate of the young moth, which “died a
martyr to its illusions”, left a deep impress on Rizal’s mind. He justified such noble death, asserting that
“to sacrifice one’s life for it”, meaning for an ideal, is “worthwhile”. And, like that young moth, he was
fated to die as a martyr for a noble ideal.
At a young age, Rizal possessed a God-given gift for literature. At age of 8, Rizal wrote his first
poem in the native language entitled Sa Aking Mga Kababata (To My Fellow Children). In school, he was
also sften times in trouble. He was even the one who started a rumble in ther school because his
classmates were laughing at him. Rizal as a child was not a troublemaker, but if someone gave him the
chance to, he wouldn’t reject at all. Rizal had many troubles and a lot of rivals in school. On the other
hand, he was still able to gain a lot of awards. The Rizal that was last in Latin became the first in class.
Moreover, one remarkable event in his early years was during the February 17, 1872 when three
priest were executed. The event awakened him that years later, he dedicated his book El Filibusterismo to
the memory of Marciano Gomes, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora who were executed on the scaffold at
Bagumbayan where thousands of people coming from Pampanga, La Laguna, and Bulakan witnessed the
execution.

2. Compare and contrast Rizal’s student life and performance at Ateneo and UST.
In Ateneo, the religious order emphasized rigid discipline, character building, and religious
instruction. The Jesuits encouraged competition among students. In his fourth year in Ateneo, Rizal honed
his poetic language leading to write numerous poems under the themes of history, childhood memories,
religion, education and war. The quality of education in the Ateneo was more advanced.
In University of Santo Tomas (UST), Rizal took up Philosophy and letters because he was still
undecided on what program to take and his father liked the course. It is also in UST where he shifted to
Medicine. His decision was prompted by the failing eyesight of his mother and Fr. Ramon’s advice, his
former professor at Ateneo.
While he was studying at UST, he returned to Ateneo and took up vocational courses for boys. It
is believed that in his stay in UST, the university atmosphere led him to criticize the Dominican School
saying that Filipino students were racially discriminated by the Spaniards, the method of instruction was
obsolete and repressive and the Dominican professors were hostile to him.

3. As a student, what were your unforgettable experiences in school that may have similarities to
Rizal’s experience in school?
As a student, I was just a simple boy just like Rizal who was hardworking in school. I can say I
had a lot of experience that had mold me to become the person I am today. Rizal got bullied for being an
Indio. I on the other hand was teased for my size. However, just like Rizal, it did not stop me from doing
the things I love. Rizal is eager to learn different things such as painting, sculpting and anything that
comes to his mind. I on the other loves to do things such as dancing and singing and do the things that
makes me happy.
The story of the life of Rizal is very inspirational. He faced all the trials and never gave up. I
admire him with that. He never failed to uphold all the learnings he learned from his mother. Rizal was a
loving brother and son. These are the traits that I want to have and apply to my way of living.
