Activity 3 JOSE RIZAL: HIS EDUCATION AND CAREER

1. Explain why UST so influential upon Rizal’s intellectual development

Rizal's intellectual development was influenced by the people around him who taught
him wisdom and values. After finishing his studies at Ateneo Municipal with flying colors,
Rizal prepared to pursue further studies at the University of Sto. Thomas, which were ran by
Dominican priests. He enrolled in the course of Philosophy and Letters because it was his
father choice and he is uncertain as to what degree he wants to take. However, after
completing his freshman year, he decided to pursue medicine.
In the University of Sto. Thomas However, Rizal experienced firsthand the racism and
discrimination from the hands of the Dominican priests and his fellow classmates. Rizal
began to become an anti-friar at this stage of Rizal's life. The injustices experienced by Rizal
led him to think poorly of the friars. Rizal was more than ever determined to prove that
Filipinos are equal or even better than any foreign race because of Rizal's "race jealousy"
triggered by the friar's favoritism towards Spanish learners. He found that the atmosphere at
the UST a suffocating to his spirit as a Filipino, so he decided to leave the country and
continue study in abroad for better learning systems.

2. Discuss the highlights of Rizal’s stay at Ateneo.\

In Ateneo, Rizal was treated as an equal by the Jesuits, no discrimination nor racism.
He experienced many good things during his stay in Ateneo. The Jesuits thought about the
educational system, such as discipline, developing of character, and religious instruction.
Because of that, he learned about the real value of education in a person’s life, and to be
strong despite of all the people who were trying to pull him down. In order to reflect the
strength of the Filipino race, Rizal was more inspired to achieve and excel in his journey in
Ateneo. He proved that he was no inferior, because he became the emperor at the end of the
month and won a reward, a religious portrait. He made more effort to learn ahead, and then
made the extra effort to stand out and retain academic supremacy. Rizal developed into the
first learner. He was known as an innovative thinker, a talented scholar, and a natural leader.
It was in this environment that Jose Rizal began the education that would solidify his
political thoughts. He also made poems and writings that gave him achievements and
rewards in Ateneo. Rizal made a name in Ateneo as student leader and a national
spokesperson, because of his courage and ability to talk to the average Filipino. He excelled
in numerous fields, that would have been difficult without his early education.
