Introduction
This Learning Activity Sheets – LAS is designed for a
grade-10 student like you in order for you to know that
music is an art form and cultural activity whose medium
is sound organized in time. Music is a mysterious force which
throughout ages exerts a powerful influence of man for the main
purpose of expressing feelings, ideals, events, history, the folkways
and view for entertainments, celebrations or worship.
That’s why you have to explore ways for you to know
how to create an organized sound based on Afro-Latin American
and Popular music.

Objective:
1. Identify the musical genre of Afro-Latin American and Popular
Music.
2. Shows appreciation to Afro-Latin American and Popular music
by listening attentively.
3. Create and perform an Afro-Latin American and popular music
using indigenized materials.
4. Explore ways of creating sounds on a variety of sources suitable
to chosen vocal and instrumental selection.
5. Express personal feelings on the musical genre of Afro-Latin
American and popular music as a means of building good
relationship.

Key Concepts:

*African Music has always been an important part in


the daily life of American people.

* Music and dance are also part to religious ceremonies,


festivals, social rituals.

* Songs are used for the important events in a person’s life


(from birth, coming of age, marriage and death.

* They are used for curing the sick and bringing rain.

* Latin American instruments are extremely useful in adding


life, color, and variety to their many vocal dance forms which
have captured the world’s attention and have been
enthusiastically adopted.

* The different musical forms are the following:


1. African music – maracatu, blues, soul, spiritual, call and
response
2. Latin-American music – cumbia, tango, cha cha, rumba,
bossa nova, reggae,foxtrot, paso doble.
3. Popular music – ballads, standards, rock and roll, disco, pop,
hiphop and rap alternative music.
4. Jazz – ragtime, big band, bebop, jazz rock
5. Classical Music and crossover music

Compose a simple song using Afro-Latin American musical


genre.
Materials:

ACTIVITY 4 DANCE WITH THE MUSIC ( 3 days)

Create a dance step in an Afro-Latin American and


Popular music using indigenized musical instruments found in
your home.

ACTIVITY 5 MAKING IMPROVISED AFRICAN AND LATIN


INSTRUMENTS (2 days)
A. 1. Make improvised African and Latin instruments using
the following materials:
- Dried vegetables
- Scraps of leather
- Bamboo
- Wood
- Strips of roofing metal
- Tin cans
- Peebles
- Bottles
- Shells
2. Place all dried vegetables, strips of roofing metal,
peebles and shells to the empty bottles and bamboo.

B. Create a rhythmic/harmonic accompaniment for any song


you know using these improvised African or Latin American
instruments.

ACTIVITY 6 HOME CONCERT


Invite your parents, and family members to join in your
home concert. You will record your performance using a
mobile phone, tablet, or video camera.
