Smart Glasses for the Visually Impaired

The document proposes developing smart glasses to help blind people navigate and see by providing artificial vision. It discusses statistics on visual impairment and how smart glasses could help blind people avoid accidents by detecting obstacles and providing audio notifications. The proposed project aims to create a pair of smart glasses over 10 months that can detect objects within 1 meter and warn the user to avoid collisions, allowing blind people to navigate like those with normal vision.

INTRODUCTION

“SMART GLASSES THAT WILL GIVE BLINDS VISION TO NAVIGATE AND SEE
LIFE WITH LESS WORRIES”

Visual impairment blindness is a health issue that has been given limited attention.
According to the World Health Organization there were 285 million people who are
visually impaired worldwide where 246 million were diagnosed with low vision and 39
million who are totally blind.

The latest statistics that the Department of Health have reported that there are about
at least 300,000 Filipinos that are bilaterally blind or are totally unable to see.

Bearing in mind the physical, mental and social consequences that they suffer and
other adverse effect of not being able to see. What if we use Artificial Intelligence to
fill those shortage? What if this is the solution that our Blind Filipino Friends are
waiting for?

Our team is proposing the “SMART GLASSES” a warning tool and an informational
guide instrument in helping blind people by providing them artificial eyesight device
to navigate around and have like a natural vision of a normal person.

Most Visually impaired people rely on guide dogs or guide stick to assist them in
their daily routines and travels but these states of the art glasses are providing new
option.
A research institute in United States have reported that there are at least 70 legally
blind involved in pedestrian-related accidents, annually. The smart glasses will
lessen the risk of moving or walking alone and the worries they are about to cause
will also relieved.

In, 2016 China rolled out its first model of “Smart Glasses” for visually impaired. The
technology was the first of its kind to combine both navigation and recognition
functions. However, it is not available in market and are only limited. So, we are
proposing this in order for our Blind Filipino Friends can have this Angel Eyes and
will be soon available in market.

Smart Glass will somehow solve and help visually impaired people avoid being
involve into accidents. So how do these glasses actually work?

Visual references or pictures are converted into audio files so that users may identify
what is around them through sound. Tiny cameras are mounted at the top of the
glasses skin objects in front of the user. Information is transformed into digital data
and is processed by the glasses.

Finally, this information is turned into audio file played back to the user through
conduction. Describing what kind of objects are in a surrounding area. The glasses
can also help the person read text, identify money and colors. Smart Glasses is an
innovative tool having an echo location technology installed to be able to detect
obstacles.

It has reach an accuracy of 94% successful recognition of the marker and cost
P15,883. 81.

This is one approach that reduces mental and physical obstacles it is worthy to pay
attention from every member of the society. Most importantly it is a way in helping
them build confidence.
Smart Glasses are only the Start. The potential applications for these technologies
are endless and one way in helping our visually impaired friends see vision of life.

PROJECT GOAL

 The team aims to create Smart Glasses that can provide the visual
impaired Filipinos an ease to wander around without the fear of
bumping into obstacles, this is to give the blind people an essential tool
to be able for them to navigate like a normal person, even without clear
vision, but with the knowledge of not being able to avoid obstructions,
the team aims to bring this together within 10 months, specifically
November 1, 2021 - February 1, 2022.

PROBLEM/OPPORTUNITY DEFINITION
 The biggest challenge for a visually impaired person is to navigate
around places or even in a small-scale area they often involved in
multiple cases of accident causing them to get bruises and cuts.

PROPOSED SOLUTION

 The smart glass will contribute help to address this problem of blinds,
the smart glass that can detect things in front of the person, if the
censor detect an object within the specified nearby distance the
eyewear will sound notifying and serving as a warning or signal to them
to stop and to divert his/her direction. In that case the person will be
able to avoid getting hurt by colliding into the object.
PROJECT SELECTION AND RANKING CRITERIA

Any new project must focus on the importance of environmental health that
affects human health. “Smart glasses” project is environmentally friendly because it
is one of the products that do not cause any harms to the environment and help
preserve the environment.

Smart glasses are a very helpful device for people with vision difficulties. So,
by the existence of “Smart glasses” project the percentage of educated people will
increase. Not only that but with this it can make visually impaired people make their
life easier and be able to continue living and do things like as a normal human.

COST-BENEFIT ANALYSIS

BUSINESS REQUIREMENT

Glasses are designed to be able for the blind people who suffer from vision
difficulties to make their lives easier and be able to continue living like a normal
human being to be able for them to achieve their dreams and desires in life.

 The glasses should be able to detect an obstacle in less than a meter

distance.
 It will give a signal, as a warning that there will be an object coming in the
person way.
 A handy glasses that will give an ease and not difficult to manipulate, as it
was for people with vision difficulties.

SCOPE

 This project aims to give visual impaired people the feeling or experience of
being able to walk and wander around without the fear of getting hurt. It was
to give them what other people feel while they are walking in a busy street
wanting to relax and to do something they desire. As we know visual impaired
people are neglected with the freedom of being alone, most especially
outdoors. Our team aims to make them feel what normal people were feeling.
