level of mastery in achieving the learning competency.

THE DESIGN THINKING PROCESS: Solving Complex

Problems
In A User – Centric Way
OBJECTIVES

After completing this chapter, you’ll be able to:

1. understand the relationship of the Design Thinking Process;

2. communicate clearly about the different stages of the Design
Thinking; and
3. have a process and mindset suited to innovation and creative problem-
solving.

CONTENT

1. Stage 1: Empathize
2. Stage 2: Define

LECTURES

STAGE 1: EMPATHISE
As mentioned in Module 1, Design Thinking are set of principles that frame a way to see
problems and solutions from a new point of view. These principles provide the foundation for
delivering solutions that meet or exceed users’ expectations.

MODULE 3

In the midst of uncertainty, we need a model for action. We will focus on the five – stage
Design Thinking model (by Hasso – Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford).

Let’s take a closer at the five different stages of Design Thinking.

The FIRST STAGE is to gain an EMPATHIC UNDERSTANDING of the problem

you are trying to solve. This involves consulting experts to find out more about the area of
concern through:

 Observing. View users and their behavior in the context of their lives.

 Engaging. Interact with and interview users through both scheduled and
short “intercept” encounters.

 Empathizing. Experience what your user experiences.

With this interaction with people, it will give you an understanding of their:

 Experiences. Focused on human outcomes.

 Motivations. Focused on the activation of human motives.

As well as immersing yourself in the physical environment so you can gain a deeper
personal understanding of the issues involved.

Why Use Empathy Maps

1. Capture who a user or persona is. The empathy – mapping process helps
distill and categorize your knowledge of the user into one place. It can be used to:

o Categorize and make sense of qualitative research

o Discover gaps in your current knowledge

2. Communicate a user or persona to others. Once created, it should act as a

source of truth throughout a project and protect it from bias or unfounded
assumptions.

MODULE 3

An empathy map is a collaborative visualization used to articulate what we know about a

particular type of user. It externalizes knowledge about users in order to:

1. create a shared understanding of user needs; and

2. aid in decision making.

MODULE 3

Steps Involved in the Empathy Mapping

1. What did the user SAY? Write down significant quotes and key words that the
user said.

2. What did the user DO? Describe which actions and behaviors you noticed or
insert pictures or drawing.

3. What did the user THINK? Dig deeper. What do you think that your user
might be thinking? What are their motivations, their goals, their needs, their
desires? What does this tell you about his or her beliefs?

MODULE 3

4. How did the user FEEL? What emotions might your user be feeling? Take
subtle sues like body language and their choice of words and tone of voice into
account.

STAGE 2: DEFINE
The SECOND STAGE is called the DEFINE phase. It involves collating data
from the empathize stage to design problems and challenges. You will be able to create
an actionable design problem statement or Point of View (POV) that inspire the
generation of ideas to solve it.

How do you define your POV?

1. Define the type of person you are designing for – your user.

 Fictional characters created to represent user types.

 Useful in considering the goals, desires, and limitations of the users to
help guide design decisions.
 A way to put a personal human face on otherwise abstract data about
customers.

MODULE 3

2. Define your POV: Looking at the needs and insights.

 Extract and synthesize your users’ most essential and important to

fulfill needs. Needs should be actionable.

 Express insights you developed gathered from Empathise process.

3. Articulate your POV

Combine the three elements – user, need, and insight – as an actionable

problem statement that will drive the rest of your design work.

MODULE 3

Example:

An adult person who lives in the city needs access to a shared car 1- 4 times
for 10 – 60 minutes per week because he would rather share a car with more
people as this is cheaper, more environmentally friendly, however it should
still be easy for more people to share.

Point of View is one that:

 Provides a narrow focus.
 Frames the problem as a problem statement.
 Inspires your team.
 Guides your innovation efforts.
 Informs criteria for evaluating competing ideas.
 Captures people’s attention.
 Is valid, insightful, actionable, unique, narrow, meaningful, and exciting.
