Instructions
To complete this activity, please answer the following questions:
Imagine that you have a friend or family member that has never heard of a growth or fixed
mindset before and would like to know more.
1. In a paragraph (3-4 sentences), describe the differences between a growth and fixed
mindset. Include in your answer what makes them different and what the usual
outcome each mindset is.
A fixed mindset and growth mindset are totally opposite: the first one is based on the
belief we have born with a sort of “amount of intelligence”. That means our
improvement is limited, there isn`t any interest on try new things. While a growth
mindset embraces challenges and failures as an opportunity of progress. When we
attempt on developing a growth mindset our brain become stronger and more capable
on learning.
Think back on your own life and challenges and pick one instance where you failed at
something. Next, answer each of the following questions in paragraph form (3-4 sentences).
When I went to my mission I needed to learn a new language, English. I knew a little bit
before going to the Provo`s MTC. I remembered the first time I gave a discussion and
could not express almost anything.
When I finished the discussion I felt I wasn`t enough, depressed and wanted to come
back to my safe and known home. I compared myself to other missionaries who seem to
learn faster and better than me. It was a “bitter cup” among the experience that was
supposed to be one of the best experience of my life.
3. How did you respond to those feelings?
However the language was a challenge along my mission, I didn`t give up and kept
trying. I decided to rely on the Spirit and what was the purpose why I was there. Every
day I studied, practiced and asked for help to those around me.
4. Drawing on what you know about growth and fixed mindsets, would you say that your
response was more of a fixed mindset or a growth mindset? Why or why not?
I think I tried to do my best. I didn`t resing to the fact English was hard to learn but not
impossible. It responds to a growth mindset because I put my effort and willing to
overcome what it was hard at that moment.
5. If you feel you responded with a growth mindset, what strategies did you apply to avoid
having a fixed mindset? If you feel you responded with a fixed mindset, what strategies
do you feel you could have applied (and could apply to future situations) to have a
growth mindset about failure instead?
Even though the failures and negative feelings, I look every day new learning methods
and asking for help to others around me. Recognizing I was enough and didn`t depend
on if I was o not “smart” or even I have studied English or not I could do this and express
my love and testimony in an new language. And most important I needed to humble
myself and increase my faith on the future.
