Introduction to Chemistry Concepts

This document provides an overview of chemistry as a topic for a university lecture. It defines chemistry as the study of matter, its composition and properties, and the changes it undergoes. Chemistry is identified as a science that deals with the materials of the universe and how they change. The six major areas of chemistry are then outlined as analytical, inorganic, organic, biochemistry, physical, and nuclear chemistry. The three main branches are identified as physical, organic, and inorganic chemistry along with biochemistry. Pure and applied chemistry are then defined. The document concludes by discussing how chemistry is applied to fields like medicine, agriculture, and manufacturing and how it both benefits and poses risks to the environment.

Somaville University

Semester: I
Lecture : Chemistry
Topic: Assignment
1. Define chemistry.

– Chemistry is the study of the composition of “matter” – (matter is

anything with mass and occupies space), its composition, properties,
and the changes it undergoes.

2. Explain if chemistry is science or arts.

– Chemistry is the science that deals with the materials of the universe
and the changes that these materials undergo.

3. What are the six major areas of chemistry?

– Analytical Chemistry- concerned with the composition of substances.

– Inorganic Chemistry- primarily deals with substances without carbon

– Organic Chemistry- essentially all substances containing carbon

– Biochemistry- Chemistry of living things

– Physical Chemistry- describes the behavior of chemicals (ex.

stretching); involves lots of math!

– Nuclear Chemistry - dealing with radioactivity, nuclear processes and

nuclear properties.

4. Name the three main branches of chemistry.

– Physical chemistry

– Organic chemistry
– Inorganic chemistry

– Biochemistry

5. Define pure chemistry.

– Pure chemistry- gathers knowledge for the sake of knowledge.

6. Define applied chemistry.

– Applied Chemistry- is using chemistry to attain certain goals, in

fields like medicine, agriculture, and manufacturing – leads to an
application.

7. What in the world isn’t Chemistry?

8. Helps you make choices; helps make you a better informed citizen,
a possible career for your future, used to attain a specific goal.
9. Who uses medicine and biotechnology materials?
- Medicine and Biotechnology
- Supply materials doctors use to treat patients
10.Discuss the important of chemistry using for agriculture.
- Agriculture
- Produce the world’s food supply
- Use chemistry for better productivity – soil, water, weeds
- plant growth hormones
- ways to protect crops; insecticides
- disease resistant plants
-
11.Is chemistry affecting the environment?
- both risks and benefits involved in discoveries
- Pollutants need to be
- identified and
- 2) prevented
