SECTION 15140
PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
1.1.1 The work in this section includes the design, fabrication, furnishing, assembly,
testing, packaging, delivery, supervision of installation, and installation of pipe and
equipment hangers, brackets, and supports.
1.1.2 SCOPE
1.1.3 Pipe supports shall be furnished complete with all necessary inserts, guides,
anchors, bolts, nuts, rods, washers and all necessary appurtenances required for a
complete installation and satisfactory operation.

1.2 REFERENCES
1.2.1 This section contains references to the following standards for manufacturer and
installation requirements. They are a part of this section in their entirety or as
specifically modified. In case of conflict between the requirements of this section
and those of the listed documents, the requirements of this section shall prevail. In
case of conflict between the listed documents, the more stringent requirement shall
prevail.

4. The Contractor shall review the piping layout in relation to the surrounding
structure and adjacent piping and equipment before selecting the type of support
to be used at each hanger point.
5. Free-standing pipe connections to equipment, including chemical feeders and
pumps, shall be firmly attached to fabricated steel frames made of angles,
channels, or I-beams anchored to the structure. Exterior, free-standing overhead
piping shall be supported on fabricated pipe stands, consisting of pipe columns
anchored to concrete footings, with horizontal, welded steel angles and U-bolts
or clamps installed to secure piping.
6. All piping shall be rigidly supported and anchored so there is no movement or
visible sagging between supports.
7. Hangers and supports shall withstand all static and specified dynamic conditions
of loading to which the piping and associated equipment may be subjected. As a
minimum, consideration should be given to the following conditions:
8. Weights of pipe, valves, fittings, insulating materials, suspended hanger
components, and normal fluid contents.
9. Weight of hydrostatic test fluid or cleaning fluid if normal operating fluid contents
are lighter.
10. Reaction forces due to the operation of safety or relief valves.
11. Wind loadings on outdoor piping.
1.3.4 Seismic loads
1. Hangers and supports shall be sized to fit the outside diameter of pipe, tubing,
or, where specified, indicated or required, the outside diameter of insulation.
2. Where negligible movement occurs at hanger locations, rod hangers should be
used for suspended lines, wherever practical. For piping supported from below,
bases, brackets or structural cross members should be used.
3. Hangers for the suspension of size DN 65 and larger pipe and tubing shall be
capable of vertical hanger component adjustment under load.
4. The supporting systems shall provide for and control the free or intended
movement of the piping including its movement in relation to that of connected
equipment.
5. Where there is horizontal movement at a suspended type hanger location,
hanger components shall be selected to allow for swing. The vertical angle of
the hanger rod shall not, at any time, exceed 4 degrees.
6. There shall be no contact between a pipe and hanger or support component of
dissimilar metals when supporting copper tubing by use of felt isolator inserts,
rubber, plastic or vinyl coated, or felt lined hanger and support components.
7. Unless otherwise specified, existing pipes and supports shall not be used to
support new piping.
8. Unless otherwise specified, pipe support components shall not be attached to
pressure vessels.
9. Plumber’s tape shall not be used to support piping.

1.4 SUBMITTALS
1.4.1 Shop Drawings: Indicate system layout with location and detail of trapeze hangers.
1.4.2 Product Data: Provide manufacturer’s catalog data including code compliance, load
capacity, and intended application.
1.4.3 Manufacturer's Installation Instructions: Indicate special procedures and assembly of
components.
1.4.4 Design Data: Indicate load carrying capacity of trapeze, multiple pipe, and riser
support hangers. For every piece of material or equipment with an operating weight
of 500 pounds or more, the Contractor shall submit a design support drawing
prepared according to the Section 15010.
1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE
1.5.1 Contractor shall be responsible for structural integrity of all hangers, supports,
anchors, guides, inserts and sleeves.
1.5.2 The hangers, brackets, and supports furnished under this Specification shall be
designed and manufactured by a Company who shall demonstrate to the satisfaction
of The Owner that the Company complies with the experience criteria as specified
in the Bid Documents.
1.5.3 Installer Qualifications: Utilize an installer experienced in performing work of this
section who is experienced in installation of work similar to that required for this
project and per the minimum requirements of MSS SP-89. Field welding of supports
shall be by certified welders qualified in accordance with ASME Boiler and Pressure
Vessel Code, Section IX using welding procedures per the minimum requirements of
MSS SP-58.
1.5.4 Support and sleeve materials and installation shall not interfere with the proper
functioning of equipment.
1.6 DELlVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING
1.6.1 Comply with manufacturer’s ordering instructions and lead time requirements to
avoid construction delays.
1.6.2 Deliver, in accordance with the Bidder Documents, the General Requirements and
as directed by the Owner, all products and materials to the storage site. Off-Ioad the
equipment.
1.6.3 Deliver materials in manufacturer’s original, unopened, undamaged containers with
identification labels intact. Maintain in place until installation.
1.6.4 Store materials protected from exposure to harmful weather conditions.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 MATERIALS
2.1.1 All structural hanging materials shall have a minimum safety factor of five.
2.1.2 All materials shall meet or exceed all applicable referenced standards, state and
local requirements, and conform to codes and ordinances of authorities having
jurisdiction.

2.1.3 Submerged piping and equipment parts shall be supported with hangers, brackets,
clips, or fabricated supports of stainless steel ASTM A316 according to Section
05120.
2.2 PIPE HANGERS AND SUPPORTS
2.2.1 General: Standard pipe supports and components shall be manufactured by
recognized manufacturers.
2.2.2 Fire Protection Piping:
1. Conform to NFPA 13.
2. Hangers for pipe sizes 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches: Malleable iron, adjustable swivel, split
ring.
3. Hangers for pipe sizes 2 Inches and Over: Carbon steel, adjustable, clevis.
4. Multiple or trapeze hangers: Steel channels with welded spacers and hanger
rods.
5. Wall support for pipe sizes to 3 Inches: Cast iron hook.
6. Wall support for pipe sizes 4 Inches and Over: Welded steel bracket and wrought
steel clamp.
7. Vertical support: Steel riser clamp.
8. Floor support: Cast iron adjustable pipe saddle, lock nut, nipple, floor flange, and
concrete pier or steel support.
2.2.3 Plumbing Piping - Water:
1. Conform to ASME B31.9, MSS SP58 and MSS SP69.
2. Hangers for pipe sizes 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches: Malleable iron, adjustable swivel, split
ring.
3. Hangers for cold pipe sizes 2 inches and over: Carbon steel, adjustable, clevis.
4. Hangers for hot pipe sizes 2 to 4 inches: Carbon steel, adjustable, clevis.
5. Multiple or trapeze hangers: Steel channels with welded spacers and hanger
rods.
6. Multiple or trapeze hangers for hot pipe sizes 6 inches and over: Steel channels
with welded spacers and hanger rods, cast iron roll.
7. Wall support for pipe sizes to 3 inches: Cast iron hook.
8. Wall support for pipe sizes 4 inches and over: Welded steel bracket and wrought
steel clamp.
9. Wall support for hot pipe sizes 6 inches and over: Welded steel bracket and
wrought steel clamp with adjustable steel yoke and cast iron roll.
10. Vertical support: Steel riser clamp.
11. Floor support for cold pipe: Cast iron adjustable pipe saddle, lock nut, nipple,
floor flange, and concrete pier or steel support.
12. Floor support for hot pipe sizes to 4 inches: Cast iron adjustable pipe saddle,
lock nut, nipple, floor flange, and concrete pier or steel support.

13. Floor support for hot pipe sizes 6 inches and over: Adjustable cast iron roll and
stand, steel screws, and concrete pier or steel support.
2.2.4 Pipe Anchor:
1. Factory fabricated, double saddle, welded construction, made of high strength
carbon steel.
2. Anchor shall be capable of withstanding a deadweight (downward force)
equivalent to the weight 28 feet of Sch.40 pipe filled with water of the pipe size it
supports.
3. Provide with critical dimensions as indicated on the Drawings.
4. Anchors shall be degreased, and deburred, shop coat primed and ready for
welding when delivered to the jobsite.
5. Pipe anchor shall be capable of withstanding a lateral seismic force equal to 0.6
times the deadweight force.
6. Pipe anchor shall be capable of withstanding an axial thrust load equal to 1/2 of
the deadweight force.
2.2.5 Pipe Guide Assembly:
1. Factory fabricated, two (2) pieces, welded construction, made entirely of carbon
steel.
2. Unit shall consist of retainer outer tube and spider slide/pipe clamp assembly.
3. Assembly shall be capable of withstanding a downward deadweight force equal
to the weight of 28 feet of Schedule 40 pipe filled with water of the pipe size it
supports. Assembly shall also be capable of withstanding a lateral or tangential
seismic horizontal force equal to 0.6 times the deadweight.
2.2.6 Elbow Supports:
1. Welded steel pipe stand with steel baseplate anchored and grouted to floor,
seismic spring support and welded steel extension off pipe elbow. Use U-bolt
cradle where support is below horizontal pipe; refer to the Drawings.
2. Spring shall have minimum 2” deflection.
2.3 STRUCTURAL ATTACHMENTS
2.3.1 Steel beam clamp with eye nut: Beam clamp and eye nut shall be forged steel.
Configuration and components shall comply with MSS.
2.3.2 Welded beam attachment: Beam attachment shall be carbon steel and comply with
MSS.
2.3.3 Welded steel bracket: Bracket shall be carbon steel and comply with MSS Type 32.
2.3.4 Beam “C” clamp with locknut and retaining strap: Beam clamp and locknut shall be
forged steel. Configuration and components shall comply with MSS.
2.3.5 Concrete wall attachment: Concrete wall attachments shall conform to SMACNA
Seismic Restraint Manual Guidelines for Mechanical Systems.

2.4 ACCESSORIES
2.4.1 Hanger rods: Rods shall be carbon steel or 304 stainless steel, threaded on both
ends or continuous threaded and sized as specified.
2.4.2 Weldless eye nut: Eye nut shall be forged steel and shall comply with MSS.
2.4.3 Welded eye rod: Eye rod shall be carbon steel with eye welded closed. Inside
diameter of eye shall accommodate a bolt diameter 1/8” larger than the rod diameter.
2.4.4 Turnbuckle: Turnbuckle shall be forged steel and shall comply with MSS.
2.4.5 Metal framing channel: Framing channel shall conform to the Metal Framing
Manufacturers Association Standard MFMA-1. Framing channel shall be 1-5/8
inches square, roll formed, 12–gage carbon steel. Channel shall have a continuous
slot along one side with inturned clamping ridges.
2.4.6 Thermal pipe hanger shield: Thermal shields shall be provided at hanger, support
and guide locations on pipe requiring insulation. The shield shall consist of an
insulation layer encircling the entire circumference of the pipe and a steel jacket
encircling the insulation layer and shall be as specified in Section 15250. The
thermal shield shall be the same thickness as the piping system insulation specified
in Section 15250. The vapor barrier shield shall be used for cold systems. Stainless
steel band clamps shall be used where specified to ensure against slippage between
the pipe wall and the thermal shield.
2.5 INSERTS
2.5.1 Inserts: Malleable iron case of galvanized steel shell and expander plug for threaded
connection with lateral adjustment, top slot for reinforcing rods, lugs for attaching to
forms; size inserts to suit threaded hanger rods.
2.5.2 Inserts shall be of a type that will not interfere with structural reinforcing and that will
not displace excessive amounts of structural concrete.
2.5.3 Fasteners depending on soft lead for holding power or requiring explosive powder
actuation will not be accepted.
2.6 PROTECTIVE COATING
2.6.1 Support and anchor products, except stainless steel or non-ferrous supports, shall
be blast-cleaned after fabrication and hot-dip galvanized in accordance with Section
05035.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 PIPE HANGER AND SUPPORT LOCATIONS
3.1.1 The Contractor shall locate hangers and supports as near as possible to
concentrated loads such as valves, flanges, etc. Locate hangers, supports and
accessories within the maximum span lengths specified in the project specifications
to support continuous pipeline runs unaffected by concentrated loads.
3.1.2 At least one hanger or support shall be located within 600 mm from a pipe change in
direction.
3.1.3 The Contractor shall locate hangers and supports to ensure that connections to
equipment, tanks, etc., are substantially free from loads transmitted by the piping.

3.1.4 Where piping is connected to equipment, a valve, piping assembly, etc., which will
require removal for maintenance, the piping shall be supported in such a manner
that temporary supports shall not be necessary for this procedure.
3.1.5 Pipe shall not have pockets formed in the span due to sagging of the pipe between
supports caused by the weight of the pipe, medium in the pipe, insulation, valves and
fittings.
3.1.6 Support horizontal cast iron pipe within 450 mm of each joint.
3.2 INSTALLATION
3.2.1 Welded and bolted attachments to the building structural steel shall be provided
where required and shall be in accordance with the requirements of SMACNA
Seismic Restraint Guide and AISC M016. Unless otherwise specified, there shall be
no drilling or burning of holes in the building structural steel.
3.2.2 Unless otherwise indicated, attachments to the building concrete shall be in
accordance with the requirements of NSR-98 Seismic Restraint Guide.
3.2.3 Hanger components shall not be used for purposes other than for which they were
designed. They shall not be used for rigging and erection purposes.
3.2.4 Embedded anchor bolts shall be used instead of concrete inserts for support
installations in areas below water surface or normally subject to submerging.
3.2.5 The Contractor shall install thermal pipe hanger shields on insulated piping at
required locations during hanger and support installation. Butt joint connections to
pipe insulation shall be made at the time of insulation installation in accordance with
the manufacturer’s recommendations.
3.2.6 Where several pipes can be installed in parallel and at same elevation, provide
multiple or trapeze hangers.
3.2.7 Support riser piping independently of connected horizontal piping.
3.2.8 Provide felt lined inserts for copper piping.
3.2.9 Hanger and support components in contact with plastic or FRP pipe shall be free of
burrs and sharp edges.
3.2.10 Rollers shall roll freely without binding.
3.2.11 Finished floor beneath pipe stand and framing channel post bases shall be roughed
prior to grouting. Grout between base plate and floor shall be free of voids and
foreign material.
3.2.12 Base plates shall be cut and drilled to specified dimensions prior to welding
stanchions or other attachments and prior to setting anchor bolts.
3.2.13 Plastic or rubber end caps shall be provided at the exposed ends of all framing
channels that are located up to 7 feet above the floor.
3.2.14 Prime coat all exposed steel hangers and supports. Refer to Section 09900 for finish
painting. Hangers and supports located in crawl spaces, pipe shafts, and suspended
ceiling spaces are not considered exposed.
3.2.15 Unless otherwise indicated, exposed exterior steel pipe supports, channel, and
clamps shall have hot dipped galvanized finish of minimum 1.50 ounces per square
foot on each side in conformance with ASTM A123.

3.2.16 Welds on pipe supports, either interior or exterior shall be cleaned of flux and
finished with a “zinc rich” primer.
3.2.17 The Contractor shall adjust hangers and supports to obtain required pipe slope and
elevation. Shims made of material that is compatible with the piping material may be
used. Stanchions shall be adjusted prior to grouting their base plates.
3.2.18 Pre-Cast tee structural concrete: Hanger supports, anchors, etc. attached to the
precast, double tee, structural concrete system shall be installed in accordance with
approved Shop Drawings only. Holes required for hanger rods shall be core drilled
in the "flange" of the double tee only; impact type tools are not allowed under any
circumstances. Core drilling in the "stem" portions of the double tee is not allowed.
Holes core drilled through the "flange" for hanger rods shall be no greater than 1/4
inch larger than the diameter of the hanger rod. Hanger rods shall supported by
means of bearing plates of size and shape acceptable to the Architect/Engineer, with
welded double nuts on the hanger rod above the bearing plate. Cinch anchors, lead
shields, expansion bolts, and studs driven by explosion charges are not allowed
under any circumstances in the lower 15 inches of each stem and in the "shadow" of
the stem on the top side of the "double tees".
3.2.19 Mechanical sleeve seal installation: Select type and number of sealing elements
required for pipe material and size. Position pipe in center of sleeve. Assemble
mechanical sleeve seals and install in annular space between pipe and sleeve.
Tighten bolts against pressure plates that cause sealing elements to expand and
make watertight seal.
3.2.20 Beam clamps shall not be installed on piping greater than 8 inches in diameter. All
beam clamps shall have beam clamp retaining straps.
3.3 EQUIPMENT BASES AND SUPPORTS
3.3.1 Provide housekeeping pads of concrete, thickness as indicated on the Drawings and
extending 150 mm beyond supported equipment.
3.3.2 Provide templates, anchor bolts, and accessories for mounting and anchoring
equipment.
3.3.3 Construct supports of steel members. Brace and fasten with flanges bolted to
structure.
3.3.4 Provide rigid anchors for pipes after vibration isolation components are installed.
3.4 FLASHING
3.4.1 Provide flashing where indicated or necessary.
3.4.2 Provide flexible flashing and metal counter flashing where ductwork penetrates
weather or waterproofed walls, floors, and roofs.
3.4.3 Flash vent and water pipes projecting 300 mm minimum above finished roof surface
with lead flashing and cast iron counter flashing, 225 mm minimum clear on sides
with 300 x 300 mm sheet size. For pipes through outside walls, seal per Drawing
Details.
3.4.4 Flash floor drains in floors with topping over finished areas with 3 kg. lead, 250 mm
clear on sides with minimum 900 x 900 mm sheet size. Fasten flashing to drain
clamp device.

3.4.5 Provide acoustical lead flashing around ducts and pipes penetrating equipment
rooms, installed in accordance with manufacturer's instructions for sound control.
3.4.6 Adjust storm collars tight to pipe with bolts; calk around top edge. Use storm collars
above roof jacks. Screw vertical flange section to face of curb.
3.4.7 Seal floor drains watertight to adjacent materials.
3.5 SLEEVES
3.5.1 Set sleeves in position in formwork. Provide reinforcing around sleeves.
3.5.2 Size sleeves large enough to allow for movement due to expansion and contraction.
Provide for continuous insulation wrapping.
3.5.3 Extend sleeves through floors 25 mm above finished floor level. Calk sleeves.
3.5.4 Where piping or ductwork penetrates floor, ceiling, or wall, close off space between
pipe or duct and adjacent work with fire stopping insulation and calk air tight.
Provide close fitting metal collar or escutcheon covers at both sides of penetration.
3.5.5 Install chrome plated steel escutcheons at finished surfaces.
