Activity No. 5: Noble Gases Are S

The noble gases belong to Group 18 of the periodic table. They are called noble gases because they have a full outer electron shell which makes them very stable and unreactive. In contrast, magnesium is reactive because it has an incomplete outer shell and needs to gain or lose electrons to achieve a full shell like the noble gases. Light bulbs are filled with argon gas rather than oxygen because argon is inert and will not combust like oxygen. The noble gases all have a full outer shell of 8 electrons except for helium which only has 2. Their stability can be related to having a full outer shell of valence electrons.
