THE WESTERN MAZAUA SITE OF THE EASTER SUNDAY MASS IN 1521 BY DR.
ROLANDO O. BORRINAGA
(a reaction paper by Marwin Joyce Odita)
Our history professor, Dr. Rolando Borrinaga, had lectured us before about the conflict
between Limasawa and Butuan with regards to where the first Catholic mass was held. Even
Homonhon was also claiming to be the site of the first mass as they put a marker about it on a
specific part of the island. There were a lot of references which is entangled to this particular
event that results to misunderstanding. The two parties present their own interpretation with the
matter to prove their point.
Dr. Borrinaga, a historian who investigates the first mass in Limasawa which is also our
professor, had given us his document about the 1521 Easter Sunday Mass in Limasawa. I was
able to read the whole document and came up with this reaction paper.
The document was entitled “The Western Mazaua Site of the Easter Sunday Mass in
1521”. It gives every detail on every angle to prove that Limasawa was where the Easter Sunday
Mass in 1521 was held. Dr. Borrinaga visited plenty of primary sources and use it as evidence to
prove his theory. He scrutinized every essential detail, not just the primary sources but also the
geographical characteristics of the island. He used Google Earth, which I think is a smart move
because it gives exact coordinates and landscape contours, for the details of Limasawa’s harbor
and to pinpoint where the mass was held.
Dr. Borrinaga’s theory was proven correct with his document. Through thorough
investigation and research, Limasawa is now recognized as to where the first Easter Sunday
Mass on the Philippine soil was held.
