Aldehydes
Its functional group is the carbonyl. The carbonyl group appears at the end of the
hydrocarbon chain.
C O
Aldehydes can be named in two ways, one is to add the “al” ending and the other
way is to add “aldehyde” to the aldehydes name:
CH4 : Methane CH₂=O: Methanal/Acetaldehyde
Aldehydes have pleasant odours, and in principle, they are derived from alcohols
by dehydrogenation. Aldehydes up to twelve carbon atoms are liquid, except
methanal, because is a gas at room temperature, aldehydes undergo to reactions
like nucleophilic addition reactions, oxidation, reduction.
Aldehydes are present in many natural products like fragrances and flavors or in
vitamins, carbohydrates and hormones, all these compounds are synthetized
naturally by living organisms, for example:
Methanal (CH₂=O): It is a pungent smelling gas that provokes tearing, dissolves
easily in water. Its main applications are: as a textile dye, preparation of
explosives.
Vanillin (C8H8O3): An aldehyde commonly used as a flavoring substitute for vanilla.
It is used in the elaboration of cakes
