AREAS OF PHILOSOPY
 EPISTEMOLOGY
- deals with the nature of knowledge knowing closely related to
methods of teaching and learning.

 METAPHYSICS
- deals with the nature of reality and existence.

 ETHICS
- examines moral values and rules of right conduct.

 AESTHETICS
- deals with the values of beauty and the art.

 LOGIC
- is the study of correct thinking.

I. Classical Art
- was influenced by Egypt and Meopotamia

500 B- ancient Greece and Roman Empire were the superpowers


II. Golden Age of Greece- Classical Period, Age of Pericles
 Greece: divided into city states
1. Athens (art, musicians, culture, architect and philosophers.

 Socrates- first philosopher use analytic method, idealistic

PREVAILING IDEAS
 HUMANISM
- way of thinking that they believe that man is the highest of all
creature, motto: “ Man the measure of all things”. (the artistic nude
sculpture or painting)

 IDEALISM
- Socrates was an Idealist. To be perfect body should be developed
through music.

 RATIONALISM
- is the use of reason.

III. Helenistic Period- 400 BC


 Alexander the Great- undefeated warrior at all times.
 Hellenistic- decline period of Persian Empire.

IV. Roman Art 100 BC


 Romans were “this wordly”
 First to do governance of huge people, huge apartments,
supermarkets, baths, aqueducts, road network
 Colliseum
 Early Christian Period
 Persecution of Christians
 King Nero ordered the burning of Rome
 Catacombs

V. Byzantine Art
 300- Queen Helena- converted to Christianity
 Byzantuim- center of art and culture
 Renamed Constantiople
 Christianity- influenced the art and culture of the Roman Empire
 Architecture- churches and basilicas
 Music- Christian music, dances, drama
 Painting- early Christian symbols:
cross, peacock, anchor, dove, fish
 Mysticism

VI. Romanesque Art- 500 AD
 476 AD- fall of Roman Empire
 Attacks from the North, Plague
 Dark Ages
 800 AD- Monasticsm
 Hierarchism
 First Holy Roman Emperor- Charlemagne
 Paintings: witches, devil, hell
 1100- Roman empire started to develop

VII. Gothic Period


-to bridge the gap between what is worldly and heavenly

Thomas Aquinas- priest- theologian who tried to explain faith
through reason.
