Q. As a history reader what do you think, what were the reasons/factors behind the
development of Two Nation Theory?
ANS:
Two nation theory is the basis of the creation of Pakistan which states that Muslims and Hindus
are two different nations by every definition. Muslims have their own culture, tradition, beliefs,
social and moral points. Muslims are different from Hindus from every point of view, therefore
Muslims should have a separate homeland to live their life and in which Islam can be practiced
as dominant religion.
On the basis of two-nation theory the Quaid-e-Azaam demanded the partition of India into two
states, a Muslim state to be called Pakistan and the other Hindu India that is Bharat.
Following are the factors or reasons/ differences behind the development of the two nation
theory:
Religious differences
Cultural differences
Social differences
Economic differences
Educational differences
Language
RELIGIOUS DIFFERENCES:
Muslims believe that Allah is one and he is the only creator of the whole universe but Hindu
believe in many gods. Muslim believe in the Holy Quran and life hereafter but Hindus
believe in the writings called Vedas.
CULTURAL DIFFERENCES:
Muslims followed the Islamic culture whereas Hindus followed the self-build culture. Muslims buried
their dead bodies while the Hindus burnt their dead bodies. Muslims slaughtered the cow whereas Hindus
considered “the mother cow” as a sacred cow. In Islam every human being is equal while in Hindus
there is a caste and creed system. The only way of greetings in Islamic culture is ASSALAM O
ALAIKUM whereas common greetings in Hindus are; Namaste, ram ram jai Sri Ram etc.
SOCIAL DIFFERENCES:
Hindus and Muslims differ in their social life. The moral values, ethics and norms of both the
communities are totally different. The clothes, the foods, the households, construction of home etc. are
totally different from each other. Pakistani women wear shalwar kameez churidar with kurta or frock
whereas Indian women wear sari or churidar. Pakistani men wear shalwar kameez kurta shalwar or dhoti
whereas Indian men wear dhoti kurta pant shirt. The main food of Pakistan is wheat, rice, chicken, beef,
meat, vegetable and pulses. The main food of India is wheat, rice, vegetable and pulses they don’t eat
meat, chicken etc.
ECONOMIC DIFFERENCES:
There is no check and balance in Hindus where as there is a complete check and balance in Islam.
Zakat is compulsory in Islam where as there is no concept of zakat in hinds. Interest is forbade in Islam.
At that time, Hindus were given the better opportunities to progress economically whereas the Muslims
were not given the job opportunities as they were thrown out from the government sectors so they became
financially week.
EDUCATIONAL DIFFERENCES:
Muslims did not receive modern education which heavily affected their economic conditions.
Whereas the Hindus receive modern education which made their economic condition better. Muslims
could not cope with the society because they ignore the modern education.
POLITICAL DIFFERENCES:
The political differences between Hindus and Muslims played an important role in the development
of two nation theory. Hindu-Urdu controversy and congress attitude were the most important reasons.
HINDI-URDU CONTROVERSY:
Hindus demanded that Urdu should be written in Hindi script but Muslims were not in this favor which
result in the gap between Hindus and Muslims.
CONGRESS ATTITUDE:
The Indian national congress was found in 1885. It claimed that to represent all communities of India but
congress only supported India and oppressed all Muslims ideas.
LANGUAGE:
Muslims language was Urdu which was written in Arabic script whereas Hindus language was Hindi
which was written in Sanskrit script. There is a difference in writing, thoughts of poetry. Hindi language
has its own way of writing which is quite different from Urdu. Even this small difference lead to a string
difference between Hindus and Muslims.
