REACTION ON CHAPTER 5: SOCIAL DIMENSION OF VALUES
(FILIPINO VALUES, VALUES SYSTEM, FILIPINO VALUES SYSTEM IN BUSINESS ETHICS &
FILIPINO VALUES TOWARDS EDUCATION)
The Filipino value system or Filipino values refers to the set of values that a majority of us
Filipinos have historically held important in our lives. A great deal of Filipino values manifests in our
etiquette and customs. Without words, these gestures speak volumes about what this culture treasures
and respects. For example, when meeting people for the first time, one greets the eldest first, showing
respect.
The Filipino values system is defined by the way people live their life as an influence of one’s
culture. Some common Filipino values that may have an influence in business is having an “utang na
loob” or debt of gratitude. The essence of utang na loob is an obligation to properly pay back a person
who has done a favour. There is a Filipino saying, ”Ang ‘di marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay ‘di
makakarating sa proroonan.” This proverb serves as a reminder that one has to be thankful and
endlessly grateful to those people who have helped them reach their goals in life. Another is the
padrino system which has been the source of many controversies and corruption. It has been an open
secret that one cannot join the political arena of the Philippines without mastery of the Padrino System.
Many would still deny this, it may even be contested and be considered as a false accusation but in our
political system, from the lowest Barangay official, to the President of the Republic, it is expected that
one gains a political debts and dispenses political favour to advance one’s career or influence, if not
wealth.
On the other hand, Values Education is one of the most important things that should be taught
in schools. Talking about the Filipino values towards education, as Filipinos we are all known for good
characteristics. When we were still small, we were taught by our parents to give respect to elders, love
our brothers, sisters, and family, have faith in God and always be kind to others. However, in our
generation today these traits are slowly fading. That’s why it is important to practice values in schools
and among students. By promoting values education in schools we can create a better country for the
future generations through lessening the negative attributes by teaching values.
