Questions

Q1.

The circuit diagram shows a 9.0 V battery connected in series with a 250 Ω resistor
and another resistor, X.

= Voltemeter

(a)  Draw a voltmeter on the circuit diagram to measure the voltage of resistor X.

(2)
(b)  The current in the circuit is 0.012 A.
Calculate the resistance of resistor X.

Resistance=voltage /current
voltage=9.0V
Current=0.12A (4)
Resistance=9/0.12
resistance=75

resistance = ...............75............................................ Ω

Q2.

The graph shows how the distance travelled by an aeroplane changes during part of its journey.
(a)  (i)  State the formula linking average speed, distance moved and time taken.
(1)

Average speed= distance moved/time taken

(ii)  Calculate the average speed of the aeroplane during this part of its journey.
Give a suitable unit.
(4)
Average speed= distance moved/time taken

Distance moved=400KM 400000metres

Time taken=30 minutes 1800seconds

Average speed=400000/1800

Average speed=222.22m/s

average speed = .......222.22............................ unit .....m/s...................

(b)  During the flight, the height of the aeroplane decreases.

As the height of the aeroplane decreases, the temperature outside the aeroplane increases.
Explain how the air pressure outside the aero plane changes as the height of the aero plane
decreases.
(3)
Pressure increases with decreasing altitude/height. At lower elevations, there are more air molecules
above a given surface so they hit against each other more often causing more pressure. So the lower the
aero plane goes the greater the amount of pressure outside.

Q3.

A car driver sees a hazard on the road ahead.

The graph shows the velocity of the car from when the driver sees the hazard.

(a)  (i)  Use the graph to determine the reaction time of the driver.

(1)
reaction time = ........0.9............................................... s
(ii)  Calculate the stopping distance of the car.

Stopping distance =thinking distance +braking distance

Thinking distance/reaction time= 0.9*15
=13.5
Braking distance=1/2*3.1*15
=1/2*46.5
=23.25

Stopping distance= 23.25+13.5

=36.75m
(4)

stopping distance = ................36.75........................................... m

(iii)  Calculate the acceleration of the car when the car is braking.

Acceleration(a)=final velocity(v) – initial velocity(u)/time(t)

v=0
u=15
t=3.1

a=v-u/t
a=0-15/3.1
a=-15/3.1
a=-4.84
(3)
acceleration = .................4.84.......................................... m/s2

(b)  The speed of the car affects the thinking distance and the braking distance.
Discuss other factors that affect the thinking distance and the braking distance of the car.
(4)
I. Thinking distance

 Tiredness- thinking distance increases when the driver is tired

 Intoxication-if the driver is under the influence of alcohol or drugs the thinking distance will
increase

II. Braking distance

 The condition of the road and weather- if the road is wet or icy then it will be difficult for
the vehicle to stop so the braking distance will increase

 The condition of the vehicle- if the vehicle has poor brakes o worn out tires the braking
distance will increase

Q4.

Schiaparelli is a spacecraft that was sent to Mars in 2016.

(a)  Schiaparelli slowed down as it fell vertically through the atmosphere of Mars.

(i)  Draw labelled arrows on the diagram to show the forces acting on Schiaparelli as it fell.
(3)
air resistance

weight
(ii)  Schiaparelli then opened a parachute to slow down.
Explain how the spacecraft reached a low terminal velocity after opening its parachute.
Use ideas about forces in your answer.

At first air resistance is small and the person accelerates.

As the person speeds up, air resistance increases.
After a while the air resistance balances the weight. The person begins to move at a constant
terminal velocity

When the parachute is opened there is a large upwards force which causes the person to
decelerate.
Eventually the forces balance once again and the person reaches a new, much slower terminal
velocity

(4)
(b)  The parachute was disconnected when Schiaparelli was at a height of 2.0 m from the surface of
Mars and travelling at a speed of 0.45 m/s.
Calculate the speed of the spacecraft just before it hits the surface of Mars.
[acceleration of free-fall on Mars = 3.4 m/s2]

Speed =acceleration pf free fall*time

Time =2.0/.45
=4.44
Speed of aircraft=3.4*4.44
=15.096m/s
(4)

speed = ..........15.096........................................... m/s

(c)  Suggest why Mars has a lower gravitational field strength than Earth.
(1)
...... It is because of the planet smaller mass........................................................................

Q5.
This question is about stretching a spring.

(a)  The graph shows how the extension of a spring varies when a force is applied to the spring.
The line on the graph shows that the spring has been extended past its elastic limit.
The line has a straight section and a curved section.

(i)  Draw a cross on the line to show the elastic limit of the spring.
(1)
(ii)  Sketch another line to show how the extension will change when the force is decreased from its
maximum value back to 0.
(2)
(b)  (i)  State which energy store of the spring increases when it is stretched. Assume the spring does not
reach its elastic limit.
(1)
.........Elastic potential energy.......................................................................................................................
(ii)  How is this energy transferred to the spring?
(1)
   A    electrically
   B    by heating
   C    mechanically
   D    by radiation
