BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Way back, the Philippines before the implementation of K to 12 was the only
Asian country to have a 10-year education program (Geronimo, 2013). This is why it
became difficult for Filipinos to be competitive with other Nations that have at least 12
years of basic education. Majority of Adolescents in the Philippines who did not enter
tertiary education is not allowed to work at a very young age. They become unemployed
or cannot legally enter into contracts.

With this major problem on education, the Department of Education started to

implement the new K-12 educational system on the School Year 2011-2012, which also
includes a new curriculum for all schools nationwide. K-12 Program covers Kindergarten
and 12 years of basic education (six years of primary education, four years of Junior High
School, and two years of Senior High School [SHS]) to provide sufficient time for
mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for
tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship.

Students must choose a strand or track that they would like to take for the next
two years. There are different strands and tracks that can also help them choose a course
they might take in college. Each student in Senior High School can choose among three
tracks: Academic; Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL); and Sports and Arts (SA).
The Academic track includes three strands: Accountancy, and Business Management
(ABM); Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS); and Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The K-12 Program of the government will allow students to having mastery of
competence and enable them to cope up with lessons. The curriculum are enriches to the
local needs of the students to be responsive to choose a specialization that will suit their
field of interest. The present curriculum offers a more balanced approach that students
may acquire and master their lifelong interests and learning skills for livelihood income
approaching 21st century. With the K-12 Education also help graduated students the skills
needed in the labor market and prepare responsibilities and opportunity to be accepted
and work to the skills they acquired. (Ma. Araceli Bello Verjom)
Not just that, but the tracks offered by Senior High is the first step towards chosen
career of a student. It is important that students choose the right track and if not, can have
a major effect towards their future. There are actually many factors that can affect a
students’ decision. These range from the family choice to influence from friends. Even
students in Grade 11 are still confused in their choice of track because of the lack of
guidance.

That is why researchers conducted a research regarding this to identify the track
preferences of the students and guide them in choosing the right track.
