3 Verb families
Activity Card game
Aim To revise verb forms by playing a card game.
Interaction Groups
Language focus Review of verb forms
Skills focus Speaking
Preparation Photocopy one worksheet for each group of four students and cut it into cards.
When to use After Unit 2 Lesson 3
Time 15 minutes

Procedure 1 Elicit the verbs see, saw, seen and seeing, write them on the board and
drill the pronunciation of each.
2 Tell the students that they are going to play a game called ‘Verb families’
and explain the rules:
– The students play in groups of four. All cards are dealt so that each
student has eight cards.
– The students have to collect ‘families’, which consist of the four
verb forms on the board (infinitive, past simple, past participle,
present participle).
– The students take turns to ask each other for cards. Elicit an
example question and write it on the board, e.g. Have you got
‘seeing’? (Yes, I have. / No, I haven’t.).
– The students can only ask for members of a verb family if they
already have one member of that family.
– If the student asked has got the card, they must give that card to the
student who asked for it. The student who won the card can now
have another go. If the student asked hasn’t got the card, the
student who asked for it loses their go. Play now passes to the
student on the right of the last person that played.
– Play continues like this until all the families have been collected.
– The winner is the student with the most families.
3 Demonstrate using two students.
4 Divide the class into groups of four, hand out a set of cards to each
group, and ask them to begin playing. Monitor and make a note of any
pronunciation problems that occur.
5 When the groups have finished playing, get feedback by asking each
group who was the winner.

Variation Pronunciation can be included in the game. When a student asks another
student for a verb, the group can decide if their pronunciation is correct or
not. If it is not correct, they lose their go. Monitor to check pronunciation
and confirm the group’s decision.
