INTRODUCTION

A memorial is a structure erected to commemorate persons or events. The memorial in fact is an object which tries to focus on a
memory of some particular thing. The history, philosophies and doctrines of a society are all stored in a memorial. Memorials are
generally built to link the present with the past. As we know that memorial is an intangible thing so in memorial it becomes a tangible thing
that can be looked upon and where those memories good or bad can be experienced by the present generation. So in the
memorial all those experiences can be captured. Memorials have been the part of the human society ever since the civilization
has come into being. They have been existing in terms of one or the other built form. The build of huge pyramids in Egypt, the
beautiful Taj Mahal in India, various megalithic monuments are all memorials. They all try to grab the memory of some beloved
ones, the occurrence of some wonderful or devastating events in the history. Memorials are also linked with architecture as it is the path
which tries its best
way possible to turn the memory into the built form. Architecture has long been the preferred medium
with which to publicly memorialize any events or persons. Thememorials are associated and attached with
emotions and sentiments that belong to particular event. And a memorial tries to address such emotions and
sentiments felt by the people. The building of memorials today are unlike many other architectural projects in that itis the
architecture that becomes the centerpiece, not merely the container to house the artifacts of memory. The memorial is a place that is
filled and charged with memory, a place that challenges its visitors to revisit an event which perhaps scarred and
touched them and find new meaning and perhaps peace. The power of a true memorial is its ability to create a place in which the
memories of countless individuals with a varying attachment to the event can exist simultaneously. Memorial is able to combine a
diverse program which is concerned with the needs of several groups of people. As author James Young explains, “. . . it is not
that we are sharing a common memory, it is that we are sharing a common place of memory.” The client becomes not only the
group concerned with the construction and costing of the project, but also the victims, the survivors, the heroes, those who
were there and forever changed by the event and those who may have never had any prior knowledge of it. By creating a place
which is both universal and specific, a place which serves to educate and heal, a place that remembers not only
the history of the event, but its victims, heroes, and survivors, the memorial can become a valuable setting for the individual, and
an integral part of the community as a whole

BHOPAL

Bhopal is a city in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It's one of India’s greenest cities. There are two
main lakes, the Upper Lake and the Lower Lake. On the banks of the Upper Lake is Van Vihar National Park,
home to tigers, lions and leopards. The State Museum has fossils, paintings and rare Jain sculptures. Taj-ul-
Masjid is one of Asia’s largest mosques, with white domes, minarets and a huge courtyard The city
YAAD-E-HADSA- BHOPAL GAS TRAGEDY MEMORIAL,BHOPAL(M.P) 2019

attracted international attention in December 1984 after the Bhopal disaster, when a Union Carbide India
Limited (UCIL) pesticide manufacturing plant (now owned by Dow Chemical Company) leaked a mixture of
deadly gases composed mainly of methyl isocyanate, leading to one of the worst industrial disasters in the
world's history. The Bhopal disaster continues to be a part of the socio-political debate and a logistical challenge
for the people of Bhopal.[8]

Bhopal was selected as one of the first twenty Indian cities (the first phase) to be developed as a

smart city under PM Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission.[9]

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION

The geographical location of the Bhopal City lies within North Latitude 23°16' and East Longitude 77°36'. The
location of Bhopal falls in the north-western portion of Madhya Pradesh. If seen in the Map of India, Bhopal
occupies the central most region of the country. The city of Bhopal shares its border with two large and
picturesque lakes. Like few other big cities of the country, Bhopal is also divided into two parts - the old city and
the new one. The Old Bhopal is situated in the northern part of the city, while the southern part is called as the
New Bhopal. The two lakes of the Bhopal City are referred as the Upper and the Lower Lakes.

Due to its central location, Bhopal is very easily approachable from all parts of the state and country as well. The
Bhopal Airport, Railway Stations and well-maintained roads enhances the convenience of the place for the
tourists and visitors.

BREIF ABOUT THE CLIMATE

Bhopal has a humid subtropical climate, with cool, dry winters, a hot summer and a humid monsoon season.
Summers start in late March and go on till mid-June, the average temperature being around 30 °C (86 °F), with
the peak of summer in May, when the highs regularly exceed 40 °C (104 °F) Extreme high in May was 46.7 °C on
19 May 2016 and in June it was 45.9 °C on 7 June 2019. The monsoon starts in late June and ends in late
September. These months see about 40 inches (1020 mm) of precipitation, frequent thunderstorms and flooding.
The average temperature is around 25 °C (77 °F) and the humidity is quite high. Temperatures rise again up to
late October when winter starts, which lasts up to early March. Winters in Bhopal are cool, and not very much
comfortable like summers, with average daily temperatures around 16 °C (61 °F). The winter peaks in January
YAAD-E-HADSA- BHOPAL GAS TRAGEDY MEMORIAL,BHOPAL(M.P) 2019

when temperatures may drop close to freezing on some nights. Lowest temperature ever recorded was 0.3 °C.
Total annual rainfall is about 1146 mm (46 inches).

WHY THIS PROJECT?

Death is something that no one wants to witness, but as it is a natural phenomenon you simply cannot avoid it.
Deaths of people who are close to you or of someone else whom you know always bring pain. But instead of
being emotional you need to handle the death of a person properly. According to Tyron Edwards, “Quiet and
sincere sympathy is often the most welcome and efficient consolation to the afflicted” To show your love and
sympathy towards the death person, memorials can be quite useful. The word ‘memorial’ derives from the Latin
‘memos’ which literally means ‘mindful’. Thus, with memorials the memories associated with the death person
always remain with us in so many ways. Memorials are an important part of every culture. They allow people to
remember a deceased loved one or an important public figure. Memorials have existed in every culture for
thousands of years. For examples the Taj Mahal, Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial, and the
Great Pyramids were created in the loving memory of great leaders and unforgotten heroes. It is only due to
memorials that even today we are able to remember the people who were important in our lives, from Parents to
Presidents and show our respect to them. Also, cremation memorials are regarded as a bridge between the past
and the future that link together generations. Memories of a person are precious and you can show to the world
the value and importance of the person in your life with memorials. The place where a memorial in the name of a
deceased are enacted become a permanent place where you can visit once in a while and show your meaningful
tribute to the deceased who is still remembered by you. A memorial made in the honor of some person also
serves as an everlasting tribute to a life well lived and life worth remembering. It is a representation of that person
and how they lived; it is a final gift. Memorials also serve as a permanent record for future generations and
genealogy. Memorials allow family, friends and the community to know about their past generation.
Cemeteries offer the opportunity for you to set your memorials in stone or bronze for future generations, satisfying
an immediate need and preserving our heritage. When memorials are placed in the cremation ground, you can
feel the presence of the deceases. It is not necessary to spend a fortune on buying memorials. You can buy a
modest or an extravagant one depending upon your budget and preferences.

To conclude, death comes knocking on every door, and you are left with no choice but to mourn silently while life
passes away. But now you can give your loved ones the privilege of being honored and remembered for
generations to come with memorials.

SCHMATIC DIGRAM EXPLANNING CONCEPT

YAAD-E-HADSA- BHOPAL GAS TRAGEDY MEMORIAL,BHOPAL(M.P) 2019

INFRENCES

Site planning keeping in mind the topography and visual appeal are

recommendable

The rich mix palette of materials help in creating a sense of respect

Although one might not relate the meorial to a temple but the experience

and the flow of spaces generated is appreciative.

Some parts of the memorial show ancient war herores of Mahabhart and

Ramayana or Tipu Sultan Maharana Pratap of the theme and lack of

interactive installation or sculptures make the memorial diffcult to relate.

Architecture expressions generated through - play of light and shadow,

variation in types of spaces framed views through the journey seem to

be lacking in the museum complex.

Amphitheater utilizes the slope of the site, which has led to a south facing

open air theater.

LITERATURE REVIEW

WORLD TRADE CENTER MEMORIAL

INTRODUCTION:-

The memorial was planned in the immediate aftermath of attacks . The competition

for the memorial museum design was rolled out in 2003 to remember and honor the

people killed in terroist attacks of September 11,2001 and Feburary 26, 1993 .The

results were announced in 2004 and the construction was completed in 2014 The

Huffington Post wrote that walking through the museum is like being transported

back to the turmail, destruction and anguish of 9//11. Exhibits express the disbelief

and heartache of New York and the nation

Name Of The Project:- World Trade Center Memorial

Location:- New York

Architect:- Davis Brody Band for underground museum design

Peter Walker for landscaping and Snohetta for pavilon design

Site:- 8 ACRES

Built up area:-11,000 sq.m

YAAD-E-HADSA- BHOPAL GAS TRAGEDY MEMORIAL,BHOPAL(M.P) 2019

DESIGN:-

As the name of the competition entry "Reflecting Absence" suggests, the footprint of the twin was

transformed into two 1 acre pools with the largest man-made fountains in United States , The voice of gushing

water from the fountains , muting the hustle-bustle of the city and the 400 White

Oak trees provide a perfect setting for a contemplative sanctuary .Thereby enhancing the ''reflecti-

ve '' nature of the project.

The memorial plaza is designed to be mediating spaces , it belongs both to the city and to the

memorial. located at street level to allow for it intergration into the fabric of the city, the plaza

encourages the use of this space by New Yorkers on a dail basis .The meorial grounds is not be

isolated from the rest of the city, they will be a living part of it.

The Museum explore the historic implicants of that tragic date , through state of - the - art

multimedia exhibits, archives and monumental artifacts Rather than designing icon containing

exhibhits, a series of icons which are the exhibhit'' has been designed large parts of the museum

are left empty owing to the masive scale and the concept of the overall complex. it has 4major

components 1st entrance - from a lively plaza to a quite and contemplative environment 2nd -

meandering ribbon '' which is a slpoed path with exhibits along as if drawn by gravity '' 3rd -West

chamber - the bedrock level chamber having the foundation of the WTC towers ''last column with

''slury wall''- surving retaining wall as the backdrop 4th- the escalator from ground zero to meorial

level.

RELEATIONSHIP BETWEEN FUNCTIONS

The three key point on site a foundation of WTCI b.

foundation WTC2 and c the museum pavilion are

connected via a landscaped pedestrian plaza the subway station exit is on the north east of sitr from

where most of the pedestrian population arrives.

RELEATIONSHIP WITH SURROUNDINGS

Located in lower Mantham Memorial is

a part of the master plan done by studio

Daniel Libeskind . it serves as a plaza for

for the surrounding skyscrapers

SITE PLAN

The site is dominated by the two depression on the surface of the earth which are the foundation cavities of the

twin towers

which house the memorial.A museum pavilion , a glass structure is the only building on site which leads to the

underground

museum Rest of the site is lined by trees . The positionig of the museum in the site is according to the master-

planning done by

Libeskind studio.
YAAD-E-HADSA- BHOPAL GAS TRAGEDY MEMORIAL,BHOPAL(M.P) 2019

PEDESTIRAN AND VEHICULAR MOVEMENT

The site is surrounded by roads on all sides and the site merges with

the sidewalks . it has the path subay station just underneath [Link]

meorial plaza is located at street level and is pedestrian accessible,

from all sides which makes it seamlessly merge into the city fabric

Whole site is pedestrianized.

YAAD-E-HADSA- BHOPAL GAS TRAGEDY MEMORIAL,BHOPAL(M.P) 2019

INFRENCES

Usage of the remains from the WTC building

Response on ground zero should be sensitive enough to respect

the sanctity of the site.

Memorial to a very recent event that plays a very crucial part in

healing wounds hence needs to be more interactive with the

relatives and friends of the victims.

.The arbitary dimensions of the entrance pavilion to museum

does not evoke any emotion and the form and shape of the

museum seems out of place with the rest of the memorial.
