Subject : About Exploitation of Children in Urban Society.

Sir

I wish to express my concern regarding the way children are exploited in educated, urban society
by making them participate in reality TV through your newspaper.

In Urban Societies parents are increasingly using their children as means of achieving their own
unfulfilled wishes, resulting in physical and mental exploitation of the children. Forcing children to
participate in reality shows or cajoling them to play roles in TV serials by shunning games are
some examples of child exploitation. Even parents among audience of such programmes openly
compare their wards with child actors on TV. In school arena parents put pressure on their wards,
to
excel in the field of academics, sports and other activities alike without considering their field of
interest and abilities. The implication of exploitation of children in the guise of making their future
bright is evident now.

The diseases like hypertension, obesity, diabetes which were known to be adult diseases a
decade back are common among children. Psychotic problems among children are also rising with
cases of drug abuse, depression or even suicide is reported frequently.

Authorities in the Child Rights Department and educational institutes should come out with bolder
steps to curb the problem. There should be a ban on all types of advertisements and programmes
on TV with child actors below 14 years of age. There should be regular counselling for parents in
schools to make them understand the consequences of stressing the children.

I hope the concerned authorities will take notice of the gravity of this issue and take urgent
corrective measures.

Yours faithfully
Samita Kumar.

Subject: Complaint about malfunctioning of a recently bought washing machine.

Dear sir
This is with reference to a 7 kg Samsung washing machine, model no. W12087 bought recently
from M/s Sharma Electronics, South Extension, New Delhi with invoice number AI 6520 / 2019
dated 23rd December 2018. Unfortunately it started to malfunction within a week.

The machine is very noisy and its buzzer also doesn't work properly. The pipes have been
blocked. However I have tried to put across the problem to the dealer, both telephonically and
through emails but it has been to no avail.

My mother suffers from arthritis and it is highly inconvenient for her to wash clothes without the
washing machine, therefore I look forward to an urgent solution. Since the washing machine is still
in under warranty period, I expect you to replace it with another washing machine of the same
make and model.

I hope that we will get a relief soon and a company like Samsung will ensure that its reputation in
the market remains intact.

Yours faithfully
Manoj Kumar.

39 killed in train Accident Near Ahmedabad

By: Staff Reporter, TOI

Ahmedabad
January 20th, 2019

Thirty nine people were killed and more than seventy injured when Ahmedabad- Mumbai Rajdhani
Express collided with a local train at 2.40pm yesterday about 75 km away from Ahmedabad.

The accident happened when the Rajdhani Express and the local train came on the same track
due to failure in the signaling system. Both the trains were at their best speed and the collision
was terrible. The engine driver of the Express train tried to apply the brakes as soon as he saw the
other train but it was already too late. The impact was so severe that five bogeys were detailed
and plunged into the overflowing Sabarmati. The passengers were flung out of the train and many
died on the spot.

A survivor recalls, "I was sleeping when I heard a deafening noise and felt my head hit the ceiling
of the bogey.... I lost consciousness". People from the neighbouring villages rushed to the aid of
the injured. Two teams from the Railway Protection Force were dispatched to oversee the rescue
operations. Senior Railway officials rushed to the spot. The Chief Minister of Gujarat, Mr V K
Pathak, has announced compensations for the dead and the injured and assured all medical
facilities for the hospitalized. It is high time that the Railways take urgent corrective measures to
avoid such accidents in future.

Grow More Trees to Reduce Pollution

By- Shalini Singh

‘Trees are poems the earth writes upon the sky.’

Trees and plants are one of the main reasons why mankind came into existence. The
importance of planting trees has been emphasised time and again. This is because of the
numerous benefits they offer. They make the world a better place to live.

They exhale oxygen and inhale carbon dioxide to maintain the ecological balance in the
environment. They also absorb all the harmful gases and thus give us fresh air to breathe.
Trees build a cover to protect us from the harmful ultraviolet rays. Not only this, they also
serve as a habitat for birds and various species of animals.

Trees help in controlling water pollution in preventing soil erosion. The places that have a
large number of trees are quite cooler as compared to the concrete jungle that cannot do
without air conditioners which also emit gases and pollute the air. Unfortunately, urbanisation
is leading to clearing of forests and parks despite the numerous benefits they offer. People
come here for morning walks, evening strolls, yoga sessions and laughter therapy. They also
serve as a safe place for the kids and elderly to play and socialise.

The only way left to preserve them and benefit from them is by growing them at a faster rate
and ensuring that people do not cut them for their selfish benefits. Strict laws need to put in
place for defaulters. As a Chinese proverb states, ‘The best time to plant a tree was 20 years
ago, the second best time is now’. So, let’s do our bit and make this place more beautiful.

SPEECH WRITING

Q. You are Aliya/ Ali, Head girl / Head Boy of your school. You are deeply disturbed by the
rising cases of aggressive behaviour amongst the students in your school. You decide to
speak during the morning assembly about it. Write a speech on ‘Indiscipline in Schools’ in
about 150 to 200 words.

A. It has been reported that number of fights and cases of bullying has gone up
tremendously in the last few months in our school. Good morning to one and all present here.
Today, I, Alia, your Head Girl stand before you to throw light upon the grave issue of
increasing discipline in our school.

It has been brought into lime light that instances of disobedience of teachers, bullying, fights
with peers and truancy are becoming a common trend. Not only this, there have been
complaints of parents witnessing a shift in their children's attitude. This is resulting in a lot of
children getting hurt emotionally, mentally and physically.

The impact of this attitude is having on kids at an early age is disastrous and irreversible, not
to forget the damage that has been done to the school property. Stealing chalk, scribbling on
desks, walls and washroom doors, destroying cctv cameras and the list goes on. By doing
this, we are only letting us deprive ourselves of the amenities being provided by the school.

After a lot of meetings, lack of proper guidance, excessive use of social media and peer
pressure has been observed to be the root causes of the problem. The school counsellors
are taking steps to improve the situation. Life skill classes are being made mandatory for
everyone. Teachings will include counselling, motivation and inculcating friendly values.
Seminars for parents and students will be regularly organised. Our school counsellors are
available to help you all share your feelings, grudges and your personal problems. We are
doing everything we can and expect the same from you. Let’s join our hands together and
build an environment where we encourage, motivate, help and be kind to each other.
Thank you and have a good day.

Q- Cell phones are considered to be one of the most revolutionary innovations in recent
times and life seems to be impossible without them. However, like all inventions, these too
have both advantages and disadvantages. Write a debate for or against ‘Cell phones are
dangerous’.

A- Cell phones are considered to be one of the most revolutionary innovations in recent times
and life seems to be impossible without them. However, like all inventions they too have both
pros and cons and according to me, the disadvantages far outweigh the advantages. Good
morning respected principal ma’am, teachers and fellow students. The motion for the debate
today is ‘Cell phones are Dangerous’ and I strongly agree.

My worthy opponents said that cell phones have improved connectivity all-round the globe
and have led to a sense of security amongst us. However I firmly oppose this as it has been
proved that they emit harmful radiations which can cause brain tumours and skin cancer.
Also, there have been many incidents in which innocent lives have been lost just because
someone was talking on the cell phone while driving or crossing the road. Have you noticed
the shortening attention span of the children these days? It is due to the instant gratification
they get by the cell phones which display a colourful world at the touch of a button.
Would you put the cart before the horse and say that cell phones connect families? Cell
phones have only taken away the precious family bonding time by making children and adults
hooked onto their screens. Also, it is alarming to note that many psychologist believe that
cell phones have impaired the cognitive development of children leading to problems
like ADHD.

I believe that cell phones today have entangled us in a dangerous web. It is necessary to
become the masters and not let them become our masters. Cell phones have many uses,
let’s use them to our advantage and not let them take over our lives. With this I rest my case
Thank you.
