Science 7 QTR 2 Lesson 1B

This document outlines a science lesson plan on microscopes. The objectives are for students to understand the parts and functions of a compound microscope and be able to use it. The lesson will involve preliminary activities like using magnifying tools to examine small objects. Students will then explore the parts of a microscope by assembling a puzzle and examining real microscopes. They will learn that the eyepiece is used to view objects and that lenses magnify images. The lesson evaluates students understanding of microscopes and their key parts and functions.

A SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 7

Second Quarter
Lesson 1B
August 15, 2019

I-OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards
Demonstrate understanding of the parts and function of the compound microscope
B. Performance Standards
The learners should be able to employ appropriate techniques using the compound microscope to
gather data about very small objects.
C. Learning Competency
Identify the parts of the microscope and their function.
Sub competencies
1. Describe the function of a compound microscope
2. Describe parts of a microscope
a. lenses-eyepiece and objective
b. mirror/ light source and diaphragm
I. CONTENT
Compound Microscopes
III. Learning Resources
Science Learner’s Material 7, pp. 105,109-112

IV. PROCEDURES
A. Preliminary Activities
ELICIT-What is a microscope? What can it do? How does it work?

MICROSCOPE

ENGAGE-
A. Magnifying with water- Build a magnifying tool with a paper clip and water.
Materials: water, paper clip and newspaper.
1. Bend the paper clip to form a small loop
2. Dip the loop into a glass of water, then carefully remove it.
3. Looking through the drop of water in the loop, examine the ink pattern found in
figures shown on a newspaper page. What happened?

B. Provide the students with magnifying lens and ask them to look through it on top of a newspaper.
Describe what happened to the image/text viewed.

B. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New Skills

EXPLORE- Provide a Picture Puzzle of a microscope with labelled parts. Ask to students to put the
puzzle together. Familiarize each part on an actual microscope. Which part of the microscope will allow
you to look through the object to be viewed on a microscope? (eyepiece)
Look through the eyepiece examine the text on the newspaper. What happens?
Provide each group with eyepiece with different magnification (5x, 10x, 16)
Using the eyepiece ask them to look through the eyepiece , examine the text on a newspaper and
compare them when using eyepiece with different magnification.
What are microscopes? What can microscope do?

C. Making Generalization and Abstraction about the Lesson

EXPLAIN- Set up a microscope with mounted slide of letter “e” with different eyepiece.. Ask students
to view the mounted slide on the microscope.
1. How can you view an object under a microscope?
2. Which part of the microscope allowed you to view the object on the microscope?
3. What is the eyepiece made of? What does an objective contain? (lenses)
4. What are lenses? What can they do?
*A piece of glass that can make an object look smaller, larger or closer or farther away
is a lens.
A microscope contains a system of lens, what are this? (objective and eyepiece)
(detach the objective to shoe that it also has a lens)

ELABORATE-
*A microscope uses light and lenses to produce an enlarged image of an object. A simple
microscope such as hand lens has only one lens. A microscope with two or more lenses is
called a compound microscope. This lens is the ocular lens located in the eyepiece and the
other lenses are located in the revolving nosepiece (objective lenses-HPO,LPO,Oil)

Can the eyepiece, high power objective and the low power objective lens all be used at the
same time?
Ask students to look through the microscope and adjust the amount of light reflected on the
eyepiece?
Which part of the microscope provides light?
Which part reflects light?
Which part regulates the amount of light?

D. Evaluating Learning:
EVALUATE
1. What is the function of a microscope?
2. What kind of microscope do we have in our laboratory?
3. What is the function of the mirror?
4. What does the eyepiece and objective do?
5. What is the use of the diaphragm?

A. Additional Activities for Remediation:

EXTEND-
Famialize the labelled parts of the compound microscope with that of the actual microscope.
Make a list of parts of the microscope and its function.
