Sci-Bilib: Title: Gelatin Bioplastic

Gelatin bioplastic is an alternative to traditional plastic that is made from gelatin and water. It can be used to make crafts and toys for kids. The process involves mixing gelatin packets with water and food coloring on the stove until thickened. The mixture is then poured into molds and allowed to harden into a rubbery plastic over 45 minutes that can be cut or shaped. Gelatin bioplastic provides a more environmentally friendly option as it biodegrades unlike traditional plastics.

Title: Gelatin Bioplastic

Abstract:

Plastic are one of the major causes of pollution and contamination issues. There are tons of talks in the
media about some ways that we need to lessen usage and production of plastics. The used plastics can
block the drainages that can cause floods and pollutions because of the improper disposal. The
government continuously find some solution to eliminate the usage of plastic. And as a youth, we do
some science trials, turn out the Gelatin Bioplastic can be the alternative for using plastic materials. The
Gelatin Bioplastic is made of crafts, that can use for designing and toys for kids.

Materials:

Stove
Pot
Spoon
Whisk
Gelatin Packets (3)
Water
Food Coloring
Cookie Cutters
Silicon Molds (optional)

Procedure:

1. Add 75mL of water and 3 gelatin packets to the pot. If desired add 2 or 3 drops of food coloring.
2. Whisk together over medium low heat until completely mixed.
3. Once the mixture starts to seam and thicken a bit, remove it from the heat.
4. Using your spoon gently scrape the foamy layer off and discard. If you don’t remove all the foam
now it will cause some cloudiness in your final plastic. This isn’t all bad and we left it some
batches and removed it on others. The better you are at removing the foam, the more clear
your final plastic will be.

FORMING YOUR GELATIN PLASTIC

1. You can pour your solution into a container lid and leave it for about 45 minutes. After 45
minutes you will have a rubbery consistency material.
2. You can cut it with cookie cutters, scissors, or a knife. You can shape it by hand. It’s neat to play
with and I recommend doing this with at least one batch. We left ours on the lid because we
wanted to see what would happen. Turns out as it cures into a hard plastic it twists and lifts
creating neat shapes. It took about 2 days to cure completely and give us hard plastic.
