Topic and Stand Topic and Stand

This document summarizes the key points of an argumentative essay against the death penalty. The essay argues that the death penalty is an irreversible act that violates human rights and dignity. It addresses several counterarguments in favor of the death penalty, including that it provides closure to families and is a just form of retribution. However, the essay ultimately rejects these positions, arguing that the death penalty continues the cycle of violence, risks killing innocent people due to flaws in the justice system, and is a cruel punishment.

Topic and Stand Not only is death penalty an irreversible

act in which innocent people may unjustly
get caught in, it is also an attack on one’s
human rights, contradicting respect for the
dignity of all human beings.
1st Counter Argument As Duterte stated in 2017, “In the
Philippines, it is really an eye for an
eye, a tooth for a tooth. You took life;
you must pay it with life. You cannot
place a premium on the human mind
that he will go straight.”
1st Defense Human life is valuable and even
murderers should not have the value
of their lives taken away from them.
According to Pope Francis (2018),
“The death penalty is inadmissible
because it is an attack on the
inviolability and dignity of the person”.
The centre and focus of human rights
is respect for the dignity of all human
beings, and death penalty contradicts
the main purpose of the human rights.
2nd Counter Argument As mentioned by Blecker (2014), those who
oppose retribution and revenge when it
comes to death penalty wrongly equate these,
because these simply mean that we have the
power to inflict pain and suffering on those
who have done the same to us, we are all
entitled to that desire and should not be taken
from us by those who have not gone through
the same pain as we have.
Topic and Stand Not only is death penalty an irreversible
act in which innocent people may unjustly
get caught in, it is also an attack on one’s
human rights, contradicting respect for the
dignity of all human beings.
2nd Defense Retribution is nothing but the immoral desire
to inflict suffering on someone, masked as a
principle of justice. According to Schroth
(2008), the crave for revenge is one of the
lowest human emotions. To kill an individual
who has killed someone you know is simply
continuing the cycle of violence. This does not
give you closure; it only gives you a desire to
do it once again.
3rd Counter Argument As stated by Alexander (2016), this
form of punishment helps families,
who had gone through a lot of pain
from their loss, find closure.
3rd Defense This is not necessarily accurate. If we are to
implement death penalty, there will be several
errors that would lead to innocent people
having their lives taken from them. Not only
will it help some families find closure, it could
also cause a lot of suffering on those who are
related to somebody who got caught up in a
flawed justice system. The Philippines is not
completely capable of this kind of punishment
yet. For one instance, the extrajudicial killings
is an example of our flawed justice system, in
which minors are being shot off the streets
without getting a proper trial. . This form of
punishment is filled with cruelty and it
inevitably involves arbitrariness, prejudice,
and error
