INTRODUCTION
This summer internship project report is a small view to the GoodYear south Asian Tyres. This
project mainly focused into the HR and Training and Development Department. HR
Department has a crucial role to play in goodyear. The company is following all the major
theories in HR, like Kirk Patrick Training evaluation model. HR department act as a vital link
to connect the employees and the management and what can do an HR department in order to
increase the overall efficiency and productivity of employees.
The global automotive tyre market is highly consolidated and consists of passenger car tyres,
heavy truck tyres and other segments. North America dominates this market with
approximately 30 per cent of the total global demand for tyres. Fuel efficiency and safety
concerns are key factors influencing the purchase of tyres in developed markets, which are
transitioning into higher-performance tyres. Japan and Europe have implemented stringent tyre
performance criteria (covering rolling resistance related fuel saving, wet grip related braking
distance and noise reduction). Europe anticipates a 20 million tones reduction in traffic related
carbon dioxide emissions per year due to enhanced tyre performance.
The Indian Tyre Industry is an integral part of the Auto Sector – It contributes to ~3% of the
manufacturing GDP of India and ~0.5% of the total GDP directly. So, let’s understand the
dynamics of the Tyre Industry in India.
Indian tyre industry has almost doubled from ~Rs 30,000 crores in 2010-11 to ~Rs 59,500
crores in 2017-18 of which 90-95% came from the domestic markets. The top four companies
– MRF, Apollo Tyres and JK Tyres have ~65% of the market share in terms of revenue. In
terms of segmentation tyres can be divided in two ways – based on end market and based on
product.
5
Tyre Industry is known for its capital-intensive structure where 60% to 65% of the revenues is
raw material cost. The other important cost involved are SG&A (selling general &
administrative) which roughly contribute from 6% to 12% of the revenues and employee cost
contributing from 7% to 14% of revenues.
Figure No:
1.2.2.2 Raw Material Costs
As we saw above that around 250 different raw material are put together to manufacture a
tyre but the major cost generating raw materials are natural rubber, synthetic rubber and crude
derivatives like carbon black which contribute to ~80% to 85% of the total raw material cost.
Hence, rubber and crude price are key variable to Tyre Company’s profitability
Figure No:
6
Figure No:
The Indian tyre industry has been under raw material pressure for last two year due to increase
in rubber and crude prices which can be clearly seen in the above comparison charts. As per
the managements the pressure on the raw materials is expected to continue in the shorter term
due to increasing crude prices
Table No:
From the above chart it is clear that each year the cost of employment is increasing. Along with
that the price of raw materials is also increasing. But the companies are unable to increase the
tyre price accordingly. In 2019 the auto industry is facing a huge downfall due to several
reasons. Many auto manufacturing companies has stopped production and some are under
threat of lock out. Naturally the other related companies also get affected. Especially companies
which provides materials directly to the auto manufactures.

2.1 COMPANY PROFILE
Goodyear is one of the world’s leading tire companies with operations in most regions of the
world and one of the most recognized brand names. Together with its U.S. and international
subsidiaries, Goodyear develops, manufactures, markets, and distributes tires for most
applications.
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company is an American multinational tire manufacturing
company founded in 1898 by Frank Seiberling and based in Akron, Ohio. The thirteen original
employees manufactured bicycle and carriage tires, rubber horseshoe pads, and poker chips.
The manufactures pneumatic casings, inner tubes, and solid and cushion tires for all types of
vehicles.
The company takes pride in their products, services and relationships because of their valued
customers. Seiberling named the company after the courageous pioneer Charles Goodyear; the
discoverer of vulcanization. He also determined the distinctive Wingfoot trademark that
remains a symbolic link with the company's past.
9
Goodyear South Asia Tyres Private Limited was established in the year 2001. They operate as
a subsidiary of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. It manufactures tires for automobiles,
commercial trucks, light trucks, motorcycles, SUVs, race cars, airplanes, farm equipment and
heavy earth-mover machinery.
As of 2017, Goodyear is one of the top four tire manufacturers along with Bridgestone (Japan),
Michelin (France) and Continental (Germany).
Goodyear gives employment to 65,000 people and manufactures its products in 48 facilities in
22 countries around the world. Presently, most exciting new cars use wider, lower profile tyres
to enhance both their handling and looks. This type of tyre places a priority on aggressive
traction and response. In the past, that meant limited capabilities in poor weather, significant
compromises in ride comfort and tread life.
Now, a wide range of Goodyear tyres, including the new Eagle ultra-high performance and
Excellence radials, deliver outstanding performance, all season capability, and uncompromised
comfort and tyre life.

Aurangabad plant was under the ownership Ceat tyres prior to 1994. In 1995 Goodyear took
over the plant and named as Goodyear-Ceat tyres. But in 1998 the company’s name turned into
Goodyear South Asia Tyres Pvt Ltd. It was only a place to manufacture tractor tyres in the
beginning but some years after company understood tractor market is going down and they
have to focus on car tyres. With radial tyre technology Goodyear Aurangabad plant introduced
their first car tyre.
Later the company completely stopped production of tractor tyres and focused in car tyres. All
the machineries which were used for making tractor tyres were shifted to Delhi were the other
plant is situated. Still the Delhi plant is producing the tractor tyres.
Goodyear Aurangabad is giving more attention to safety and quality. “No should get hurt” that
is the policy of the company. The company is also emphasize on “the journey for quality has
to finish line.” Which means company never makes a compromise on safety and quality.
Company has made a point to employee the local people to the maximum. Employee’s children
are given more preference for job opportunities. The company does not recruit people directly
unless no one from the employees claim for that post. It can for be for himself or for children
or relatives.
14
Figure no:
The company is divided into three production departments:- Normally it is known as BTA,
BTB and BTC. But here in this project mentioned as Department1, 2, 3 for the understanding.
The division is for better governance and supervision. All the departments are depends on each
other. No department is independent and they have specific role in the production of tyre. One
is making the raw materials and other two are assembling the parts into perfect Tyre.

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber is one of the leading organizations in its industry. Goodyear Tire
& Rubber maintainsits prominent position in market by critically analyzing and reviewing the
SWOT analysis. SWOT analysis a highly interactive process and requires effective
coordination among various departments within the company such as – marketing, finance,
operations, management information systems and strategic planning
18
As one of the leading companies in its industry, Goodyear Tire & Rubber has numerous
strengths that help it to thrive in the market place. These strengths not only help it to protect
the market share in existing markets but also help in penetrating new markets.
Strong Brand Portfolio – Over the years Goodyear Tire & Rubber has invested in
building a strong brand portfolio. The SWOT analysis of Goodyear Tire & Rubber just
underlines this fact. This brand portfolio can be extremely useful if the organization
wants to expand into new product categories.
Strong distribution network – Over the years Goodyear Tire & Rubber has built a
reliable distribution network that can reach majority of its potential market.
Superb Performance in New Markets – Goodyear Tire & Rubber has built expertise at
entering new markets and making success of them. The expansion has helped the
organization to build new revenue stream and diversify the economic cycle risk in the
markets it operates in
Highly skilled workforce through successful training and learning programs. Goodyear
Tire & Rubber is investing huge resources in training and development of its employees
resulting in a workforce that is not only highly skilled but also motivated to achieve
more
Successful track record of integrating complimentary firms through mergers &
acquisition. It has successfully integrated number of technology companies in the past
few years to streamline its operations and to build a reliable supply chain
Strong dealer community – It has built a culture among distributor & dealers where the
dealers not only promote company’s products but also invest in training the sales team
to explain to the customer how he/she can extract the maximum benefits out of the
products

provide resources in the hand of the company to expand into new projects
Automation of activities brought consistency of quality to Goodyear Tire & Rubber
products and has enabled the company to scale up and scale down based on the demand
conditions in the market
19
organization structure is only compatible with present business model thus limiting
expansion in adjacent product segments
The profitability ratio and Net Contribution % of Goodyear Tire & Rubber are below
the industry average.
Not very good at product demand forecasting leading to higher rate of missed
opportunities compare to its competitors. One of the reason why the days inventory is
high compare to its competitors is that Goodyear Tire & Rubber is not very good at
demand forecasting thus end up keeping higher inventory both in-house and in channel.
Not highly successful at integrating firms with different work culture. As mentioned
earlier even though Goodyear Tire & Rubber is successful at integrating small
companies it has its share of failure to merge firms that have different work culture.
The company has not being able to tackle the challenges present by the new entrants in
the segment and has lost small market share in the niche categories. Goodyear Tire &
Rubber has to build internal feedback mechanism directly from sales team on ground
to counter these challenges.
Investment in Research and Development is below the fastest growing players in the
industry. Even though Goodyear Tire & Rubber is spending above the industry average
on Research and Development, it has not been able to compete with the leading players
in the industry in terms of innovation. It has come across as a mature firm looking
forward to bring out products based on tested features in the market.
The marketing of the products left a lot to be desired. Even though the product is a
success in terms of sale but its positioning and unique selling proposition is not clearly
defined which can lead to the attacks in this segment from the competitors

ROMI ROY
Figure No:
I was placed in the HR department of Goodyear tyres especially into the training
and development team. I had many opportunity to improve the skills and talents
in training. I was entrusted with arranging the training session for the contract
laboureres as well for the hourly associates. Before arranging the training sessions
for the employees we had to identify the training needs. For identifying training
needs we made a check off sheet to identify the needs. During the course of my
internship I suggested the HR team to conduct a general training for all the
employees at least once in a three month, which we made into practice.
A regular certification was introduced. All the employees have to undergo one
day training and certify themselves as fit for the task assigned to them.
MIS Entry
MIS entry is taking attendance of employees and entering into their details into the respective
files into the computer. By keeping this kind of documents we can recognise easily about the
33
people who have undergone training and who are not yet received training. With this we can
have a track on training. Each employee has got a file where the documents are saved. First
they will enter their names into the attendenvce sheet which I was asked to modify.
This training attendance and evaluation sheet for further reference will be kept in files of
different departments.
In Goodyear tyres all the new employees have to undergo a certain days of training. The major
training sessions are safety, quality, and manufacturing process. It is also a time to introduce
the new employees into the company and company practices. During this period the employees
will get a clear picture about the company. The training sessions are conducted using modern
technologies with power point presentation and stimulation.
Supervisor test
Supervisors are people who are directly contacting with machines and lower level employees.
They should have proper knowledge about all the areas of their department. This will make
clarity in things…….
34
The Check off sheet is prepared for identifying the training need of employees. Check off sheet
contains several questions about their duties and responsibilities. Each department and each
job is having different check off sheets.
All the employees in the Goodyear has their own personal file and employee code. So it is
important that to maintain and keep the records in the compact track system in the proper
order.
Classes by different department heads
The HR manager had arranged a class for knowing the company in depth. The classes were
taken by different department heads.
Supervisor training
Supervisors are trained for inspecting products at different level. It was conducted for
improving the quality of supervision and knowledge on different machines.
Contract employees are the backbone of Goodyear almost 300 contract employees are working
in a shift. So almost 1000 contract employees are there in the company. It is necessary to train
them and give proper knowledge about safety.
On the job training is necessary for any organization which is having more employees and
where the production is taking place. Contract labours are not educated well it is the
responsibility of company to train them according to the need.
The Goodyear is following the certification procedure for the contract labours. Unless and until
the labourers are not ready and fit for the work they won’t be certified. It is to prevent accident
and hazard identification.
35
Safety training
Goodyear is giving more importance to safety. Safety is a value for Goodyear. The company
is spending a lot of money for safety of the employees. The training is conducted for reducing
the danger.
Training need identification is a major task of the training team. Certain trainings employees
have to undergo. If the employee is not undergone that training is scheduled according to the
availability of faculty and the employee. Sometimes supervisors are also identify the needs and
recommend their names.
Skill matrix
Skill matrix is made for developing the skills of the employees. In Goodyear there are skilled
and unskilled employees. Skilled employees are identified and skill matrix is made.
After giving training for the employee’s evaluation is made on the basis of certain conditions.
Planning makes things to come in the proper way. In Goodyear training plans are made in order
to make training a successful one. Apprentice has to undergo one week training before the on
the job training. After introducing the different departments and safety the apprentice are
transferred to the respective department.
Training is conducted for apprentice for the proper knowledge and error free employment.
36
Training evaluation is conducted for training effectiveness. Exam is conducted for the
apprentice and knowledge is checked. If they are scoring more than 80% mark retest is
conducted.
I have done my internship in HR, Training and Development Department of Goodyear South
Asia Tyres Limited. The internship was for 60 days, from June 27th to August 26th. During the
period I have got familiar with the different activities and functions handled by Training
department. I was also assisting in the apprentice, contract labour, EPP labour Training, which
was one of the major task handled by the department during that period. Fortunately I got an
opportunity to do a project in the company, the topic for the project was ‘contract workers
training need identification. I have done some duties in Safety department too. So it helped me
to familiarize with the different tasks and functions performed in that department.
I had a good experience in Goodyear Limited and there is a good atmosphere to work. Every
month there is a monthly meeting conducted by each department in the organization in which
they arrange various entertainment activities, there was also birthday celebrations of the
employees. Another peculiar feature that I observed there was that they don’t degrade people
according to the positions carried by each people. There is a a day specially dedicated for the
celebrations and gathering all the people together. The employees in the organization actively
participate and perform well. Their family members can also be participate. It helps to explore
the skills and abilities of their employees. The company had conducted a blood donation camp
on Independence Day most of the people donated their blood including me.

There was an empty board in the department. The need of showing the tyre
manufacturing process was identified and made a plan and displayed the process
and some of the parts of the tyre.
There was training attendance and evaluation form but it was not meeting the
need and it contained many mistakes. So it was a time to update and make new
one.
For checking the knowledge of employees the check off sheet was necessary.
Along with labour trainer, the check off sheet designed and submitted to higher
authorities for approval.
4. I have learned how to analyze the gap between before training & after training.

CONCLUSION
Goodyear is one of the best tyre manufacturing companies in the world. It has got plants all
over the world. In India Goodyear has got two plants. Both the plants are giving more
importance to employee’s safety rather than profit. It has developed goodwill due to facilities
and services provided to their customers. It is the success of employees who keep the company
near to their heart. The management is always successful in implementing the changes,
especially the new technologies. Training and development team is playing a crucial role in
Goodyear. They train the new employee’s to give the maximum effort to bring quality in
manufacturing tyre. Most of the time it is seen that before training people have less knowledge
and after training it gets increased.
