Chapter I
INTRODUCTION
The researcher observed that many people specially teenagers are prone

nowadays on different diseases like athlete’s foot. Around up to 70 percent of

people will, at some point, develop athlete's foot (Christian Nordqvist, 2017).

Athlete’s foot can easily spread to other parts of the body and to other people (BMJ

Clin Evid, 2009). This disease is caused by fungus called Trichophyton that

commonly found on floors and clothing, and the organisms require a warm, dark,

humid environment in order to grow, and usually when foot was wet (MedicineNet,

2018).

Turmeric is a bright yellow spice with various medicinal applications native

in Southwest India coming from the family of ginger (Zingeberacaecae) which

widely cultivated throughout the tropics. According to the study entitled

“Integrated Nutrient Management Studies on Yield ang Quality of Turmeric

(Cucurma longa) in an Acidic Soil,” the plant turmeric commonly found in low

acidic soil with the presence of aluminum and iron (Sakarkar DM, et al 2006).For

treatening athlete’s foot turmeric can treat bacterial and fungal infections because

of it’s properties (L.K. Omosa, et al 2017).

Therefore, the researcher would like to make a anti-fungal soap out of

turmeric extract since there’s availability in the community it can be beneficial to

the people by using very affordable materials for treating fungus causing athlete’s

foot.

Statement of the Problem

The researcher wants to develop an anti-fungal soap out of turmeric extract.

Specifically, this study aims to answer the following questions:

1. What concentration of turmeric extract is needed to develop an Anti-fungal Soap?

2.What are the characteristics of the anti-fungal soap in terms of:

a. appearance

b. odor

c. texture

3. Is there a significant difference between the concentrations of turmeric extract in terms

of anti-fungal property and PH level?

Hypothesis

a. There is no significant difference between concentrations of turmeric extract in terms of

anti-fungal property.

b. There is significant difference between concentrations of turmeric extract in terms of

anti-fungal property.

3

Significance of the Study

The researcher wants to use turmeric extract as a component in making anti-fungal

soap to avoid triggering athlete’s foot in many teenagers in the local community. This study

will help some of the teens to treat athlete’s foot.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study will focus on the use of turmeric extract as a component in eliminating

fungus. Since turmeric is commonly found in the community the researcher aims to make

this study to the Looc,Calamba City because this place is prone to floods which one of the

factors that may affect the foot of human. This study will conduct at the Science Laboratory

of Looc Integrated School.

However, the study only limited in three treatments with 15ml, 20ml, and 25ml of

turmeric extract. The anti-fungal property will be tested using the Agar Platting Method.

The appearance, odor and texture will be rated by15 students from Grade 10 STEM. The

respondents will evaluate the treatments using 5 Point likert scale

Definition of Terms

Turmeric extract – a liquid sample with a yellow bright color.

Anti-fungal Soap – a hard sample producing a slimy and foamy substance when get wet.

REVIEW OF RALATED LITERATURE

Turmeric has a scientific name of “Cucurma longa” (MedicineNet, 2018). This

plant is a specie coming from the family of ginger (Zingeberacaecae) and it’s widely

cultivated tropical plant of India. Turmeric plant is panted in the month of September to

October. It grows in light black, black clayey loams, and red soils in irrigated and rainfed

conditions. The seeds are planted 5 7 cm deep. This crop is planted by the small rhizomes

with one or two buds. It is harvested after 9 -10 months of planting. The lower leaves turn

yellow and fall with age (Eco India,2008).

Based on the study entitled “Antifungal activity of turmeric oil extracted

from Curcuma longa (Zingiberaceae)” were studied against fifteen isolates of

dermatophytes, four isolates of pathogenic molds and six isolates of yeasts. The inhibitory

activity of turmeric oil was tested in Trichophyton-induced dermatophytosis in guinea pigs.

The results showed that all 15 isolates of dermatophytes could be inhibited by turmeric oil

at dilutions of 1:40−1:320. None of the isolates of dermatophytes were inhibited by

curcumin. The other four isolates of pathogenic fungi were inhibited by turmeric oil at

dilutions of 1:40−1:80 but none were inhibited by curcumin. All six isolates of yeasts tested

proved to be insensitive to both turmeric oil and curcumin. In the experimental animals,

turmeric oil (dilution 1:80) was applied by dermal application on the 7th day following

dermatophytosis induction with Trichophyton rubrum. An improvement in lesions was

6
S.Y. 2019-2020

observed in 2–5 days and the lesions disappeared 6–7 days after the application of turmeric

oil (J Ethnopharmacol, 1995 Dec 15).

Moreover, Turmeric is extensively used as a spice, food preservative and colouring

material in India, China and South East Asia. It has been used in traditional medicine as a

household remedy for various diseases, including biliary disorders, anorexia, cough,

diabetic wounds, hepatic disorders, rheumatism and sinusitis. For the last few decades,

extensive work has been done to establish the biological activities and pharmacological

actions of turmeric and its extracts. Turmeric has a chemical composition like curcumin

(diferuloylmethane), the main yellow bioactive component of turmeric has been shown to

have a wide spectrum of biological actions. These include its antiinflammatory,

antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, antimutagenic, anticoagulant, antifertility, antidiabetic,

antibacterial, antifungal, antiprotozoal, antiviral, antifibrotic, antivenom, antiulcer,

hypotensive and hypocholesteremic activities and it has 94% of curcumin. Its anticancer

effect is mainly mediated through induction of apoptosis. Its antiinflammatory, anticancer

and antioxidant roles may be clinically exploited to control rheumatism, carcinogenesis

and oxidative stress-related pathogenesis. Clinically, curcumin has already been used to

reduce post-operative inflammation. Safety evaluation studies indicate that both turmeric

and curcumin are well tolerated at a very high dose without any toxic effects. Thus, both

turmeric and curcumin have the potential for the development of modern medicine for the

treatment of various diseases (Ishita Chattopadhyay, et al. 2004).

Anti-fungal soap is a oil based hard soap that may apply to any external parts of

body that helps for destroying or inhibiting the growth of fungi. Fungi are mostly found

here-Absence of air flow at moist environments, warm temperatures, absence of air flow,

and dead and decaying matter. Feet, head, armpits, and groins are the most common places

where fungi can grow on your skin. Fungi that grow on skin, hair, and nails are

called dermatophytes. The most common dermatophyte is called Trichophyton rubrum.

That’s the fungus that usually causes Athlete’s Foot

Athlete's foot is a fungal infection that affects the upper layer of the skin of the foot,

especially when it is warm, moist, and irritated. It can also spread to the toenails and the

hands. The fungal infection is called athlete’s foot because it’s commonly seen in athletes

(Cynthia cobb, 2018).
