Course Description This course is a continuation of JAPA 100. It focuses on all listening, speaking, reading and writing, and students are expected to acquire an appropriate level of competency in these four areas. 2. Course Objectives a. Speaking Able to satisfy partially the requirements of basic communicative exchanges by relying heavily on learned utterances. Can ask and answer questions, within very predictable areas, by using simple sentence structures. Vocabulary centers on areas such as basic objects and places. Misunderstanding may occasionally arise, but can be understood by sympathetic native speakers with combination of other means of communication. b. Listening Able to understand some short, learned utterances and some sentence-length utterances in basic content areas of personal nature. Can comprehend words and phrases from simple questions, statements, high-frequency request/permission/prohibition/courtesy expressions. Occasionally, may require repetition, rephrasing and/or a slowed rate of speech for comprehension. c. Writing Able to meet limited practical writing needs. Can write short messages, postcards, and take down simple notes. Material produced consists of re-combinations of learned vocabulary and structures into simple sentences on very familiar topics. Can write frequently encountered Kanji (115 characters). Frequent errors in grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, spelling and characters, but writing can be understood by natives used to the writings of non-native. d. Reading Can read Hiragana, Katakana, and memorized, high frequency Kanji. Where vocabulary has been learned, can read for instructional and directional purposes standardized messages, phrases or expressions, such as some items on menus, schedules, timetables, maps and signs. Can read a simple, short passage dealing with some areas of personal information. 3. Textbooks and Other Required Materials The followings are required for this course, and photocopy or sharing with others is not allowed. Language Lab (Location: Bldg. 355 Room 110) In addition to two in-class sessions, all students must attend one-hour language lab work per week. Attendance to the language lab is on drop-in basis but mandatory, and it will be monitored and included in your attendance/participation mark. The some parts of the lab work will regularly be collected and marked as assignments. Pop quizzes on the materials in the lab may be held during the class hours to monitor your progress 2 in the lab work. You will need to purchase an access card, available at VIU bookstore, in order to access to the lab, unless you already have one. 5. Assessment 1. Attendance and Participation (including Lab1): 7% 5. A+ 90-100 B+ 76-79 C+ 64-67 D 50-54 A 85-89 B 72-75 C 60-63 F 0-49 A- 80-84 B- 68-71 C- 55-59 Notes 1. Class attendance and participation marks will be recorded based on the following system. 3 pts: well-prepared, actively participate in activities and did not miss any part of a class 2 pts: prepared, satisfactory participation in activities and did not miss any part of class 1 pt: unprepared, unsatisfactory participation in activities, or missed more than 20 minutes of a class 0 pt: absent o You may make up classes you missed, with sufficient documentation, for illness, a death in the family, and any other emergencies. However, you must make up the class within three school days. You are granted up to two make-ups per semester, but additional absences will result in loss of points in the "Attendance and Participation" category above. o Your registration to the course may be cancelled at any time, if you are absent from three consecutive classes without contacting your instructor. 2. The online exercises/activities and assignments are graded based on the following system. 2 pts: completed, meeting all the guidelines and, although there may be some mistakes, showing students’ effort to do good quality of work 1 pt: incomplete and/or not meeting all the guidelines/not showing students’ effort to do good quality of work 0 pt: not submit the work, or more than 50 % of the work is unfinished 3. There are two types of course work from workbook: Self-study Work and Assignments. The sections of the workbook specified as “Self-study Work” must be done as review after each class, and you must check your answers using the answer keys provided. Your completion of the work will be checked at the end of each lesson and recorded. Other sections of the workbook are collected at the end of each lesson as assignment, and it will be graded. 4. Quizzes can be made up under special circumstances, but you must arrange the time with your instructor immediately. The make-up tests must be taken within three school days from the original date. 5. The following actions are considered to be Cheating and will be subject to immediate disciplinary actions, including an assignment of “0”to the test or assignments in question and a submission of Academic Misconduct Form to the Dean for record: Copying from any part of another student's test paper or assignments; Allowing another student to copy from any part of your test paper or assignments; Claiming as your own work that is not your own (e.g., asking Japanese native speakers for the correct answers/phrases/sentences and presenting them as your own work) Please check the “Student Academic Code of Conduct” section of the Calendar for more information on the college policy on the topic. 6. In principle, no "Incomplete" grade will be given in this course. If you are unable to take any of the exams or the oral test, you must contact your instructor to reschedule it within 24 hours from the time that the exam 3 is originally scheduled. Otherwise, “0” will be assigned as your mark for the exam or tests. Rescheduling such exams will be granted only under such circumstances as illness, a death in immediate family and so on. You must provide your instructor with sufficient document, such as a doctor's note, to support the reason for rescheduling. Please note that, as the college policy stated in the college calendar, no travel plans should be made during the final exam period. 6. Course Requirements All students in this course will be required to: a. Participate in all lectures, drop-in language labs, and on-line activities. Your registration to the course may be cancelled if you are absent from too many classes. Also, ask your instructor for permission, before the class starts, if you have to leave the class earlier or come late. b. Check "Weekly Schedule" available on VIU Learn on every Thursday for the information of quizzes, assignments, and other course related matters for the following week. c. Study Japanese at least one hour every day outside classes. Learning another language always works the best, if you spend a small amount of time regularly, rather than a large amount of time sporadically. d. Do all the assignments and hand in them by the due date. Late submission without instructor’s permission will receive the deduction of 0.2 points per school day from your mark of the assignment. Also, your assignments will not be accepted if you do not follow the guidelines below: The pages of the work must be in the correct order. The work must be stapled on the top-left-hand corner if it contains more than one page, and only single assignment should be stapled together. As for workbook assignment, you must check the answer keys and make necessary correction before handing it in. You will receive more details on the guide lines for each assignment. 7.
