The best USPs explain how your business uniquely benefits your
customers, in just a few words. Since a USP is so powerful, you
should incorporate it into as many marketing activities as you can.
Now that we’re clear on what a USP is and why it’s valuable,
let’s start creating one for your business. Below you’ll find a
simple 3-step process to help you craft your USP in a clear and
concise way.
STEP 1:
ANSWER THE BELOW QUESTIONS RELATED TO YOUR BUSINESS
1. Differentiator / Market Gap
What are the 3-5 biggest benefits a customer gets from using your
product/service that they can’t get anywhere else?
Some examples…
• Domino’s Pizza: Fast pizza delivery, hot pizza every time, cheap prices
• M&M’s: Bite-sized chocolate that doesn’t melt in your hand, keeps clothes and
kids clean, easily transportable
Who do you help? What individual need or challenge does your target
market face that your product/service can solve for them?
Some examples…
• Domino’s Pizza: Budget-conscious pizza lovers who don’t like waiting/don’t like
cold pizza.
• M&M’s: People who love chocolate and hate when it melts and makes a mess.
STEP 2:
COMBINE YOUR ANSWERS ABOVE INTO ONE STATEMENT
You can use the below template if it helps. Your answers might overlap, so
try to rewrite it so that it makes sense.
Some examples:
• FedEx provides fast overnight shipping with great customer service for
people who need to ship things quickly and hassle-free.
• Domino’s delivers pizza in 30-minutes or less (or it’s free) for people who
love inexpensive pizza and hate waiting for it to arrive/hate cold pizza.
• M&M’s provides a way to eat chocolate on-the-go for candy lovers who
hate melted candy that makes a mess.
STEP 3:
EDIT YOUR STATEMENT TO CREATE YOUR USP
Now, take your results from Step 2 and condense it. You want your final
USP to be as specific and simple as possible.
Great USP’s are crystal clear in their message. That means as soon as you
hear them, you know exactly what they’re saying. The way to make this
happen is to do a few drafts until you arrive at your final USP.
Examples:
• Domino’s Pizza: “We deliver hot, fresh pizza to your door in 30 minutes or less,
or it’s free.”
• How to make 10X more income from one slight change to your business
model
