7th Grade Metric Conversion Lesson

Here are the steps to convert the measurements: 1) 34 L = 34,000 mL 2) 7 m = 0.007 km 3) 2000 mm = 2 m 4) 29 kg = 29,000 g 5) .008 kg = 8,000 mg Let me know if you need any of the conversions explained!

Course: 7th Grade Math DETAIL LESSON PLAN

Wednesday, April 6 / Thursday, April 7

Student Objective
(Obj. 4a) TSW… use and convert metric units of measure.

Lesson Note: Due to Case21, I had to

1-5 Metric System (Textbook Pages: 26-30) teach English measurement after
DA Test. Not something I
Resources
wanted to do.
Homework
None tonight due to Case21.

Last Night’s Homework

None

Bellwork
MCT Practice Test (Form A) – Problem numbers 24, 27, 28, 31, 36, 38, 39, 42, 53, 59, then complementary/supplementary example

Prior Knowledge
 Review bellwork.
 In previous years at school you learned about different units of measure.

Anticipatory Set
 TODAY, we are going learn how to convert between units of measurement using the Metric System.
 To introduce today’s lesson, I have a question for you:
 Display Transparency “What do these 3 countries have in common?”
 Discuss why we need to be familiar with the metric system.
 Display Transparency “Transylvania Reading Problem”

Teacher Input
 Pass out Student Notes.
 Review metric table and strategy “King Henry Died By Drinking Chocolate Milk”.
 Point out guidelines for picking the correct metric unit of measure.
 Review steps for converting units within the metric system.
 Allow students to work 3 you-try problems (independently).

 Teach students how to convert between units of measure using MATH7 program on TI84.
 Allow students to rework you-try problem #2, 3 with calculator (independently).

 Classwork: GL Page 61
 Extra practice: Hayes 46 – Mixed English and metric System (complete with calculator)

Assessment
Question the students for understanding. Monitor students as they work on “you try” problems.

Closure
1. Why is it important that we learn something about the metric system?
Well, all but three countries in the world use the metric system.
2. What are the 3 basic measurements? Meters (length),
Grams (weight),
Liters (capacity)
3. What is the phrase you can use to help you fill out the metric table? King Henry Died by Drinking Chocolate Milk.
4. When converting from a bigger unit to a smaller unit, which way do you move your decimal? Right
5. When converting from a smaller unit to a bigger unit, which way do you move your decimal? Left
What do these countries have in common?

 United States
 Liberia (located in western Africa)
 Burma (located in Southeast Asia)

Why learn the Metric System?

Most other countries have either used the metric system for many years, or have
adopted the metric system within the last 30 or 40 years.

The use of the metric system in the U.S. is increasing.

This is especially true with global trade. Global trade deals mostly in metric
measurements.
A significant portion of Romania’s economy is dependant on tourism.
A huge tourist attraction is the medieval town of Transylvania.

Reading Problem:

Nancy has her heart set on a summer trip to Europe. Her favorite book in the world is
Dracula, so she plans on staying several days in Transylvania. The vacation villa she
wants to rent claims that it is 3 kilometers from Dracula’s Castle.

How many meters is her villa from the castle?

Metric System in the Real World

Asia

Mt Everest  the highest mountain on Earth.

8,848 meters high  (29,029 feet)

Fact:
As  of  2009….  216  people  have  lost  their  lives  trying  to  climb  the  mountain!
Student Notes Lesson 1-5 Metric System Textbook Pages 26-30

The basic units of measurement in the Metric System are:

Meters = Length (how long something is)

Grams = Weight (sometimes referred to as mass)

Liters = Capacity (volume or how much something will hold)

In previous years you probably memorized this slogan to help you learn the metric system.
As you can see from the chart, the metric system is based on multiples of 10.

BASE UNIT
K Meter (m)
kilo hecto deca Liter (L) deci centi milli
(k) (h) (da) Gram (g) (d) (c) (m)

1000 100 10 BASE UNIT: 1 1/10 1/100 1/1000

Guides for choosing an appropriate metric unit:

Meter (Length)

millimeter (mm) about the thickness of a dime

centimeter (cm) about the width of your little finger

meter (m) about the distance from a doorknob to the floor

kilometer (km) about the length of 11 football fields

Gram (Weight)

milligram (mg) about the weight of a mosquito

gram (g) about the weight of a paper clip

kilogram (kg) about the weight of a bunch of bananas

Liters (Capacity)

milliliter (mL) a small spoon holds 5 mL

liter (L) a little more than 1 quart

Converting in the Metric System

The cool thing about Metric System: Any measurement given in one metric unit can
easily be converted to another by just moving the
decimal place.
