Running head: Integrated Science Differentiated Lesson Plan
Teacher: Petergail Campbell, Adonnica Blake, Don Mario Butler
Grade: 8
Unit Title: Photosynthesis and Energy Chains
Subtopic: Food Web
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
Date: October 10, 2018.
FOCUS QUESTION: What is the feeding relationship between plants and animals?
GENERAL OBJECTIVES:
Develop students understanding and awareness of the food chain and its role in
society.
Understand the interrelatedness of plants and animals
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lessons, students should be able to correctly:
Define the terms producer, consumer, carnivore, herbivore, omnivore, food chain and
habitat.
Construct terrestrial and aquatic food chains using familiar organisms.
Create food webs using the constructed food chains.
Students will co-operate with their peers fluently during various activities given
throughout the lesson.
Methodology: Discussion, Cooperative learning.
KEY VOCABULARY:
Consumers Herbivores
Producers Omnivores

Primary consumers Food chain
Secondary consumers Decomposers
RESOURCES:
White board, markers
Videos on food web/chain
PRIOR LEARNING:
Check that students have knowledge of/are able to:
Recall that organisms are dependent on each other for survival
SUMMARY OF CONTENT:
Producers, or autotrophs, make their own organic molecules. Consumers, or
heterotrophs, get organic molecules by eating other organisms. Together, they are linked in
both a food chain and a food web.
A food chain is a linear sequence of organisms through which nutrients and energy pass as one
organism eats another. A food web consists of many interconnected food chains and are more
realistic representation of consumption relationships in ecosystems. Let's look at the parts of a
typical food chain, starting from the bottom—the producers—and moving upward.
Integrated Science Differentiated Lesson Plan
At the base of the food chain lie the primary producers. The primary producers are
autotrophs and are most often photosynthetic organisms such as plants, algae, or cyanobacteria.
The organisms that eat the primary producers are called primary consumers. Primary
consumers are usually herbivores, plant-eaters, though they may be algae eaters or bacteria
eaters as well. The organisms that eat the primary consumers are called secondary consumers.
Secondary consumers are generally carnivores or meat-eaters. The organisms that eat the
secondary consumers are called tertiary consumers; these are carnivores that eat other
carnivores, such as eagles or big fish. In food webs, arrows point from an organism that is eaten
to the organism that consumes it. A predator is an organism that primarily obtains food by
the killing and consuming of other organisms, whilst an organism that is eaten by a predator
for food is called the prey.

TEACHING/LEARNING ACTIVITY:
Phase 1: Engagement:
Duration 3-5 mins
Teaching Strategies Facilitator will group students in a semi-circle to play a game of “catch the ball”
to ask questions that will activate their prior knowledge. The facilitator will
have the ball and she will throw it to random students within the circle in order
for the students to tell what they know about food chains. Students are allowed
a “lifeline”, in the form of their peers to assist them with questions they are
uncertain about.
Learner activities Students will share previous knowledge on food chains.

Phase 3: Explain:
Duration 15 minutes
Teaching Strategies Facilitator will invite all group levels to share what they have learnt with the class from
the activity and provide explanation and clear up any misconceptions.
Learner Activities Each group will share their understanding/interpretation from the completed activities.
