Questions 37 – 39 refer to the following text.
It all happened about two months ago. I was in the girls’ changing room belting out my favorite
song when my music teacher walked in. She commented that I had a mellifluous voice but I
did not think much about it. The next thing I knew, she had signed me up for the Teachers’
Day Singing Contest. When I first learnt about it, I was flabbergasted and protested
immediately.
On the big day, my heart skipped a beat when I heard my name being called. Biting my lip
nervously, I strode onto the stage gingerly, my hands clammy from perspiration. “God, please
help me!” I prayed desperately. However, when I saw the countless pairs of eyes staring at
me, the rubber band of stress in me snapped.
I had always been an awfully shy person who disliked any form of attention. I hardly spoke up
in class or participated in group activities. Thus, it was not surprising that my history teacher of
two years did not even know my name. Being in the limelight stressed me out, so asking me to
perform on stage in front of the whole school was as good as telling me to jump off a plane
without a parachute.
Standing on the stage, I looked at the audience with mute horror. The music had started
playing but I could not utter a single word. An irrational fear overwhelmed me, causing my
heart to palpitate so fast that it might just leap out from my mouth. I had never felt more
nervous and embarrassed in my life before. How I wished the ground would open up and
swallow me.
I took a deep breath and asked the judges if I could start again. Perhaps out of pity, they
agreed readily. The familiar music played once more. Shutting my eyes, I blocked out all
negative thoughts in my mind and sang my heart out. To my surprise, the audience were so
blown away that they gave me a rapturous ovation. Happiness bubbled up inside me as I
walked off the stage. Although I could not see my own face, I knew I was glowing in delight.
38. What happened when she was on the stage for the first time while the music had begun?
A. Her voice didn’t come out.
B. She felt totally embarrassed.
C. The audience were all amazed.
D. She was frightened to look at the audience.
Conference calls have become one of the most preferred means of communication for
businesses, especially to keep in touch with clients, investors, colleagues and other
stakeholders who might be spread across different parts of the world. Conferencing
services are not just for businesses but also for ordinary individuals who may want to
connect with a group of friends or family members.
Conference call service providers host something called a conference bridge, which is
a server that can connect multiple telephone lines at the same time. It is the bridge that
callers dial into to get connected to the teleconference. All you need is an ordinary
telephone line to start telephone conferencing with any number of people located
anywhere in the world. Most teleconferencing service providers have the technology to
allow up to 99 participants on a single call. If you need a larger event, that is also
possible with assistance from the service provider.
The main advantage is that you can cut down on the travel expense and time to a
considerable extent. A voice conference can also be recorded and played back at a
later date. There are also facilities such as participant polling and surveys through the
call. Conference calling helps save time, money as well as reduce the greenhouse gas
emissions due to air and auto travel. Modern technology also allows high level of data
security for the calls.
41. From the text, we know one of advantages of taking call conference is that ....
A. it can be done anywhere and anytime you want
B. it helps to communicate with local people abroad
C. it can occupy more than hundreds participants on a single call
D. it can be used for some government elections to do the polling
42. “... is that you can cut down on the travel expense and time to a considerable extent.”
(paragraph 4)
The underlined phrase has the closest meaning with ....
A. maximize
B. remove
C. reduce
D. stop

Built in 1904, Lawang Sewu is an ancient building which is famous for its exotic design as
well as its mystical tales. This Dutch colonial building is quite eye-catching that you can
easily spot in the east side of the Tugu Muda Monument Semarang, right in the middle of
this rich historical city. The name of Lawang Sewu in Javanese means “thousand of doors”,
but don’t take it literally. Although it doesn’t even have nearly one thousand, but this
peculiar designated building has a lot of doors and many large windows which made local
people back then mistaken them as doors.
From its luxurious architectural style to historical value, Lawang Sewu has many stories to
tell. It was first established by Dutch to be used as the head office of railway company,
Nederlandsch Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (NIS). But in 1942, this building was taken
over by Japanese and turned into prison and torment place where many people died
terribly. Due to its tragic history, no wonder the name of Lawang Sewu is always
associated to the spooky haunted mansion among local people. Rumor has it that there
are many ghosts sighting in this place.
Regardless its notorious spine-tingling stories that are circulated, many people like to go
there to take pictures because of its resemblance to European building style which is
considered to be unique in Indonesia. Semarang government also play role in making
Lawang Sewu become one of the most popular colonial nostalgia tourism. They have done
their work very well by doing renovation without making any significant changes to its
original architecture version.
Craig Douglas Bellamy (born 13 July 1979) is a Welsh former footballer who played
as a forward. He is currently a pundit for Sky Sports.
Born in Cardiff, Bellamy began his career with Norwich City. He went on to play
for Coventry City and Newcastle United, before spending half a season on loan
at Celtic in 2005. He returned to the Premier League later that year, playing for
Blackburn Rovers, Liverpool, West Ham United and Manchester City.
During his career, Bellamy won the Championship, the League Cup, the Scottish
Cup and the Community Shield. He also was a runner-up in the FA
Cup and Champions League. He was at times criticized for his behavior on and off the
pitch, but has accumulated millions of pounds for charity and also established a football
academy in Sierra Leone.
He made his senior debut for Wales in 1998 and over the next fifteen years gained 78
caps for his country and scored 19 goals. He was the Wales captain from 2007 to
2011, when he stepped down from the role due to injuries. Bellamy retired from
international football, following the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign. He
was also a member of the Great Britain Olympic team at the 2012 Olympics in London,
appearing five times and scoring once.
Craig Bellamy made a name for himself in British football as a firebrand journeyman,
playing for everyone from Celtic to Liverpool, Newcastle to Manchester City and many
clubs in between. At the height of his career in 2008 he saw an opportunity not to make
profit, but make a difference by establishing the Craig Bellamy Foundation. The
organization works to educate young children in Sierra Leone through soccer to help lift
them out of poverty and give them a pathway to a brighter future.

Dear Bram,
It has been a long time since we exchanged letters. In this letter I am giving you an
exhilarating experience of my camping trip.
I, along with six schoolmates, went camping to Bir in Himachal Pradesh. It was a
seven-day trip. We went to Delhi by train and after a day's stay left for Bir early in the
morning by bus and reached there by evening. We camped out in the woods. The
nights were mostly clear and we enjoyed the beauty of the moon, the stars and the sky,
It was wonderful to see the night sky, as there was not an iota of pollution in the hill
area. We also sat around the campfire and told stories and jokes.
We went for long walks and also went trekking. The natural beauty of this place is really
worth seeing. There are pine trees all around Bir and a small river flows, winding its
way through the valleys and hills. As this place is very calm and quiet, we could very
clearly hear the chirping of birds and movement of the water.
It was really a great time for all of us. I wish you were with us. When you come to
Ahmedabad next time, we shall plan a similar camping trip again. Pay my regards to
your parents.
Yours sincerely,
David
