What is Culture

 Derived from the latin “colere” which means cultivate and settle.
 The total distinctive way of life design for living and ant society
 It encompasses learned behavior , beliefs, attitudes, values and ideals
characteristic of certain societies
 Culture is a sum total of human creation, intellectual , artistic , physical and
moral guides social life

Sociaty and culture

Society- group of people occupying a geographical territory with a common


culture and interacting with each other

Functionalists - consider society and social system which has a set of components
related to one another in a more or less stable fashion through a period of time.

Conflict theorists - analyze society based on conflict and power.

Language and culture

Language- integral part of culture

Systemized usage of speech and hearing to convey, communicate, o express


feelings and ideas.
It is made up of a set of verbal and written symbols used within a certain
culture
Symbol – is anything that strands or represents something else and is not
immediately present to our senses.
Culture is inculcated orally and by writing through the medium of language.

Characteristics of culture

Culture is learned and acquired

 Not instinctive
 Acquired through the senses and form of experience
 May be acquired through imitation, conditioning, suggestion, formal or
informal instruction or mass media.
 Follow system of reward and punishment.
Culture is shared and transmitted

 Transmission through ideas


 Passed on to generation using language ang other symbolic means of
communication.

Culture is social

 It’s a group product


 It’s a social due to man’s natural tendency to socialize

Culture is ideational

 Formation of ideas and use of the same to assign meanings to his


environment and experiences.

Culture gratifies human needs

 Culture’s provision to satisfy biological and sociological needs of people.
