Technology Option for Upgradation
26th May, 2016 – India Habitat Centre, New Delhi
INTRODUCTION
W arehousing plays a very vital role in promoting agriculture marketing, rural banking and
financing and ensuring Food Security in the country. It enables the markets to ease the
pressure during harvest season and to maintain uninterrupted supply of agricultural commodities
during off season. Hence, it solves the problems of glut and scarcity, which are the usual problems in
agricultural marketing. Indian transportation and logistics market witnesses new heights; there has
been increasing buzz around technology adoption, network optimization, multimodal transportation
and improving warehousing. The latter in particular has been evolving rapidly from traditional
'godowns' to modern facilities. Indian logistics market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 12.17% by
2020 driven by the growth in the manufacturing, retail, FMCG and e-commerce sectors.
About 80% handling and warehousing facilities are not mechanized and traditional manual methods for
loading, unloading and handling of food grains and other commodities are used. However, the warehouses
which are mechanized have just forklifts or hydraulic hand pallet trucks. These numbers clearly indicate that
there is an acute shortage of organized and good quality warehousing and storage infrastructure in the
country, for both, agricultural and non agricultural commodities. A principal requirement for controlling the
warehouse is harnessing the power of technology to maximize a facility's potential. The role of warehouses
has increased due to wider product range, emphasis on shorter lead times and constant changes in customer
demand. The increased demands forces companies to improve their warehousing operations for better
service level and decreased costs. The emerging new technologies are creating strategic opportunities for the
organizations to build competitive advantages in various functional areas of management including logistics
and supply chain management. However the degree of success depends on the selection of the right
technology for the application, availability of proper organizational infrastructure, culture and management
policies. In logistics, information, communication and automation technologies has substantially increased
speed of identification, data gathering, processing, analysis and transmission, with high level of accuracy and
reliability. In logistics many new technologies are used in developed country while in India adoption process is
very slow. However due to liberalization of the Indian economy the competitive pressure is building up and the
only option to face the competition in to go in for technology enabled operations.
Despite its strategic importance in the Indian economy, the Indian
warehousing sector confronts several challenges for the successful
implementation of technology. The challenges and concerns need to
be addressed with collaborative efforts among all stakeholders,
including the government and its agencies, policy makers,
entrepreneurs, investors; logistics services providers, manufacturers,
farmers and sellers. Therefore, with a view to discuss the challenges
and opportunities for implementation in Indian Warehousing sector
ASSOCHAM in collaboration with Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food
& Public Distribution Propose to organize a National summit on
