Part 4. Gordons Functional Pattern
The patient reported of being consistent in time of eating because “mahirap na kapag
nalilipasan ng gutom kasi masama sa sikmura”, as she stated. She denies the use of vitamin and
herbal supplements. The patient admits of eating (4) times a day including a light meryenda. The
patient also stated that she drinks eight (8) to ten (10) glasses of water daily. She denies having
allergies on eggs, chicken and shrimps.
She was unable to report past and recent changes in his weight because “wala naman kasi
kaming timbangan para malaman ko yung timbang ko”, as she narrated.
3. ELIMINATION PATTERN
The patient usually defecates everyday especially in the morning. Her stool was soft,
brown and formed as she reported. On the other hand, the patient voids five (5) times or more in
a day. Her urine is usually light yellow and clear. The patient denies the use of laxatives, enemas
or suppositories. She also denies any discomfort with her bowel movement. The patient had
undergone no bowel and bladder surgery.

4. ACTIVITY – EXERCISE PATTERN
Usually, the patient wakes up at 4:00AM. After which, he starts to boil up some water
and take her usual cup of coffee while watching television or listening to music. At 6:00AM, she
is doing the household chores such as sweeping their small sala or by cleaning their front yard.
At 8:00AM, he proceeds on doing the laundry. At 11:00AM, she would cook their food and
prepare for lunch. At 1:00 PM she would take her siesta and wake up at 2:00 PM usually
spending time conversing with his husband or some of her neighbours. After that, she would
spend the rest of the evening watching television shows or listening to the radio. She sleeps at
8:00PM.
According to the patient, she usually asks for his husband’s assistance in doing certain
tasks when she experiences mild joint pain. She denies using crutches or a cane to assist her in
moving whenever she has joint pains.
ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND
The patient was able to relay information that the nurses told him about her condition.
She also stated that she was satisfied with her understanding of her condition and the prescribed
treatment and care. She stated that she can best understand through visual learning.
ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE
The patient stated that she has no difficulty in expressing himself or explaining things to
others. She was also able to ask questions regarding her treatments in a clear and understandable
manner.
ABILITY TO REMEMBER
The patient was oriented to three (3) spatial aspects as manifested by her ability to state
her name and the time and place of the interview. She was able to remember remote events by
stating the year and place of their marriage, and recent events by stating the type of food she has
eaten during breakfast prior to the interview and the time she was eaten.

6. SLEEP – REST PATTERN
Usually, the patient sleeps for eight hours from 8:00PM to 4:00AM. She also takes naps
or sleeps in the middle of the day when she gets bored from watching television shows or
listening to radio programs. She stated that she has difficulty taking naps or sleep during the day
whenever she feels joint pains. However, the patient stated that she is usually able to fall asleep
easily when she feels no symptoms of illness.
The patient sees herself as a strong woman “Matanda na rin kasi ako kaya ata ganito na
din nararanasan ko. Pero lumalaban naman ako kasi matibay akong tao eh”, as stated by the
patient.
She stated that she feels accomplished because she was able to raise up her children as
good members of the society.
She stated that she is confident with her appearance and that her illnesses do not change
her perception of herself.
She considers her family as both her strength and weakness.
The patient describes her family as a very happy one. She stated that although their
children no longer lives with them, She can still feel their love and presence because their
children keeps on checking on them on making sure that they are both okay and that they are
provided with everything that they need. The patient also stated that she is very indebted with his
husband because “nandiyan siya lagi para sa akin at hindi niya ako sinusukuan kahit na ganito
lang pamumuhay.”
The patient stated that she had her menarche when she was 15 and had her coitarche
when he was 21 years old. She was married on April 18, 1968 at the age of 23. The patient
verbalized that she has no problem with her sexuality and that she is satisfied being a woman.
She stated that, “matagal na kaming hindi nagsisiping ng asawa ko. Matatanda na kami e,
mahirap na gawin ang mga bagay na yan.” However, when they were still younger and they were
still able to do sexual activities, the patient said that she is really contented and that if she would
e sexual activities, she is still happy and contented because “okay na ako basta andiyan siya.”

10. COPING – STRESS TOLERANCE PATTERN
When she feels stressed, the patient usually watches television shows or listens to radio
programs.
To cope up with the stress, the patient always tries to have time to pray to God for
healing and compassion. He also makes sure that her husband is with her so that she has
someone to talk to.
