INTRODUCTION
After more than two decades of conflict, a generation of Somali children lost the opportunity for formal education and other benefits
of a stable childhood. Somalia has one of the world’s lowest enrolment rates for primary school-aged children. The ongoing civil war
has severely damaged the country’s socioeconomic infrastructure including schools. Extremely high rates of poverty in communities
across Somalia make it difficult for parents to afford school fees.
In light of these challenges, attempts to address the problem of illiteracy in Somalia needed to involve innovative approaches to
education which help people to receive basic education without compromising their livelihoods. To overcome or reduce these
challenges SOMALI YOUTH VOLUTEERS FOR DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION (SOYVDA) introduced Somali anti-illiteracy
program in Somalia particularly Benadir region.
Project Description
After having realized that an alarming percentage of Somali people are illiterate SOMALI YOUTH VOLUTEERS FOR
DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION (SOYVDA) decided to start massive anti-illiteracy campaign throughout Somali County
particularly Benadir region. The beneficiaries of this project are the children aged between 6-18 years in the IDP camps. FIVE schools
in which each of them consist of 20 meter square space area, four classes, one office, and four toilets will be opened at the first phase
of these campaign. The major objective is to reduce the illiteracy rate in Somalia.
There are approximately 50.000 children live in the outskirts of Mogadishu camps, 85% of these children don’t go to school because
their parents are no longer able to pay the fee of their children.
