Leaning Tower of Pisa: History & Facts
The Leaning Tower of Pisa began construction in 1173 but started tilting almost immediately due to an inadequate foundation on unstable soil. Construction stalled until 1272 and was finally completed in 1372, with efforts made to compensate for the lean as it was built higher. Today the tower leans approximately 4 degrees from vertical due to the settling foundation over time. It took nearly 200 years to construct the tower and ongoing restoration work continues due to damage from weather and age.
