APPROACH TO THE CPI 434 PERSONALITY QUESTIONNAIRE

Background to the Questionnaire


The test you are about to do is called a personality questionnaire. Please feel reassured that this is a test of
normal personality, so it will NOT tell us that you are abnormal. Many people are worried that a
personality questionnaire will tell us they are mad or that it will read their minds. This is not true, so
relax.
The personality instrument you will take is a well known, well researched and valid instrument that is
used to assess amounts of personality traits that are relevant to the style with which someone will go
about tackling their personal and working lives. The profile returned by you will give us an idea of how
you like doing things, your natural style, the easiest way for you to learn, how best to teach you, how you
might prefer to be managed and the mix of opportunities that might be important for you in your job
immediately, as well as in the future.
Questionnaire Format
The personality questionnaire will ask you to read a series of statements, decide how you feel about each,
then mark your answer, true or false, on the answer sheet. If you agree with a statement, or feel it is true
about you, answer TRUE by clicking on the T oval. If you disagree with a statement, or feel it is not true
about you, answer FALSE by clicking on the F oval. If you want to change your answer, just click the
other oval.
This is a long questionnaire - 434 questions. It usually takes around 45 to 60 minutes to complete,
although there is no time limit. However, you probably shouldnt take any longer than 70 minutes. People
who take longer than 70 minutes may be thinking too much about their responses and can be more likely
to return a fake-good profile.
Interpretation Guide to Individual Questions
If questions contain the words "never" or "always", they mean exactly that. So if a question asks "I
always make my bed before I have breakfast in the morning - True or False?", and you might make your
bed 90% of the time, then you still can't answer "True".
Question 62 says "I preferred Washington to Lincoln - True/ False". You can omit this one unless you are
familiar with Washington or Lincoln's styles. There may be one or two others you cant answer due to
Americanisms. Dont worry, this wont affect the scoring on the test and the results have been found to
translate well to Australians.
Try to answer all questions. If you find there are some you just cant answer you can leave them, but
dont leave too many out. You can leave up to five or six questions blank in total.
Finally and once again, answer each question honestly. The lie detection does not work on repetition of
questions, so dont bother going back to check your answers, just keep working quickly through the
questionnaire.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR TAKING THE CPI 434 PERSONALITY QUESTIONNAIRE


Mindset/ Take An Honest & Straightforward Approach
The personality instrument to be used on this occasion was specifically designed for recruitment and
development purposes. It has been extensively used in the recruitment processes for emergency services,
defence and public and private organisations all over the world. It is excellent for recruitment purposes
because it possesses lie detectors and validity scales that are difficult to pick up, even with a trained eye.
It is important for us to measure whether people are lying or making themselves look better than they are,
because then we know how much faith we can put in the accuracy of the results.
So, you may feel tempted to just report the good things about yourself and perhaps try to hide the things
that you dont think are as good, but please dont. If you try to make yourself look better than you
actually are, or respond in a way you think we want you to respond, you will probably return a fake
good profile. If you return a fake good, you may not progress further in the recruitment process.
Please note, the lie detectors dont work by asking the same questions at the start and at the end of the
questionnaire. They are far more subtle than that and you wont be able to pick which questions they are.
Please dont try to read into questions, just work through them quickly your first and quickest response
is usually your natural one.
Please be aware that we do not expect to see angels. We expect people to be human, so dont be
concerned if you think your responses make you appear slightly less than perfect. We expect most people
will have been naughty or grumpy, had a parking fine, disagreed with someone, etc. at some stage in their
lives thats part of being human!

Go to the web address: http://www.cppasiapacific.com


Click on Development
Carefully select CPI (NOT CPI260) and click on Take the instrument
Login: APPASS
Password: GETMEIN
Select the CPI 434 administration and select Continue
Select the Batch Name as GRADPSI (this is very important in terms of tracking your results)
Fill out the rest of the Personal Information page (you must complete your First Name, Last Name
& Gender, the rest is optional and not necessary).
9. Answer each of the questions as they are presented you can leave out up to 5 questions if you are
unable to answer some of them.
10. If you are logged out for some reason, or your computer crashes, please contact the test distributor at
[email protected] or +613 9342 1314. You will need to advise them you need an access
link resent to you for the CPI434, so you can recommence from where you left off. Please confirm
they have the correct e-mail address for you. The test distributor will only be able to do this between
9.30am and 5pm AEST. If you need to get the test completed outside these hours, then you may need
to start the CPI434 over again.
On Completion of the Instrument

11. When you have answered all questions, click on the "Done" button.
12. Click on the Log Out button.
13. Please remember to note down the ID Number presented to you. You do not need to do anything with
this unless requested by your testing administrator.
