To keep help your students make the most of their time in the UK use our bank of resources to keep them
up to date with whats happening culturally in the arts, music, film and theatre:
Discover Europe
Students can easily and inexpensively travel to other European countries for education or pleasure to
make the most of their spare time. Its never been easier to travel around the UK and continental Europe.
Thanks to the Channel Tunnel, they can board a train in London and be in Paris or Brussels in a few hours.
Frequent and efficient air services also connect major UK cities with many European destinations. In just
over an hour, you could fly from Manchester to Amsterdam, Cardiff to Paris or Gatwick to Berlin.
The excellent road and rail links mean that city-to-city journeys are generally quick. Students can get
good discounts on most of these forms of travel and student identity cards help to reduce sightseeing
costs in the UK and Europe. Many institutions have in-house travel agencies or give advice about the best
and cheapest services.

These vary according to the type of course, the institution chosen and the students fee status. A fees and
funding information sheet is available from UKCISA to help students assess their fee status.
The Education UK website is an essential tool for agents and students; once a student has chosen an
institution they can download an institution profile from the institution search on the home page. Details
of course fees are listed on each institutions profile.
Students hoping for help with funding their studies in the UK should start by enquiring with their own
ministry of education or department of education. Local British Council offices can provide details of
awards available including those offered by UK institutions themselves.
Living costs
Money matters are often on the minds of students, but they do not have to be. They need to learn how to
estimate expenses, decide how to pay for them, sort out a bank account, and manage their money day to
day.
Some parts of the UK cost more than others, e.g. London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Manchester. Advise your
students to use the student calculator to help them to work out their living costs.
When comparing living costs between the UK and other countries it is worth remembering that UK courses
tend to be shorter at undergraduate and Masters level, so accommodation and living costs are greatly
reduced.
3. Working
Working while studying
Special rules make it possible for international students to work in the UK during their
studies. Opportunities available include part-time or vacation work, as well as course-related work
placements.
Students can find out about part-time jobs that are available by consulting notice boards around their
institution, looking in local newspapers and job centres, and visiting the college or university careers
office. Many institutions have their own 'job shop', which displays part-time and holiday vacancies and
may issue job vacancy bulletins.
Warning: Remember to advise students to think carefully about how much time they will have available.
Success on their course must be their priority.

Their studies may be intensive and demanding and they should be realistic about the amount of time this
will leave for part-time work. Many students find that working part-time helps improve their English, but
they must be careful not to let work interfere with their studies.
New Rules came into force in April 2013. The new rules do not affect students who already have
immigration permission to be in the UK, they are only affected by the rules in force when they got their
visa. If they need to make a new application to stay the new rules will apply from the date they are

After graduation
Visas for working in the UK after graduation
For students studying in the UK who want to work or develop a business in the UK after they graduate,
there are a number of different visa options that they may be eligible to apply for:
Working in the UK
Tier 2
Tier 2 is open to recent graduates with a Bachelor or Masters degree, PhD, PGCE or PGDE from a
UK recognised or listed body. They can apply for Tier 2 without first having to leave the UK if they have
an offer of a skilled job from an employer that is a licensed sponsor with UKBA - you can find a list of

licensed sponsors

stem/pbsregisterofsponsors. The job must meet minimum salary criteria and the minimum salary will
differ depending on which profession they wish to work in. However, there is no limit on the number of
students who can gain a Tier 2 visa for this scheme, provided they meet these requirements. On this
scheme, they can stay in the UK for 3 years, with the possibility to extend.
Tier 5 temporary worker visa
Graduates can also consider applying for a Tier 5 temporary worker visa but they must leave the
UK and apply from overseas for this category. The only exception to this is if you are undertaking
postgraduate training or work experience that is relevant to their qualification in which case they can
switch into the Tier 5 Government Authorised Exchange scheme from inside the UK. To be able to apply
for a visa under most Tier 5 categories they must have a job offer from a licensed sponsor and pass a
points-based assessment. There are different requirements under the Youth mobility scheme. Tier 5
work experience and internship schemes are limited to 12 months, but other schemes covering
research, fellowships and training in the fields of science and medicine are limited to two years.
From April 2013, all PhD students who have completed their UK studies are now allowed to stay in
the UK to search for skilled employment or establish their own business for up to twelve months after
they have completed their PhD. This will mean PHD students can focus on completing their studies and
then have time to look for a job to gain experience of working in the UK.
Developing your own business
Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur)
The Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) visa route is for students who want to develop their
entrepreneurial skills by setting up a business in the UK. To be eligible, they need to be endorsed by a
UK higher education institute (HEI) which has signed up to this scheme. They must also have completed
their degree course with this same higher education institute. There is a limit of 1,000 places under this
scheme for the first year. An additional 1,000 places will be available under this route for completing
MBA students from April 2013. On this scheme, they can stay in the UK for one year initially but they
have the option to extend this for a further 12 months if their HEI is willing to continue to endorse
them. To find out which universities and colleges are currently taking part in this scheme,
visit www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/documents/employersandsponsors/tier1-endorsingbodies.pdf although other HEIs will be eligible to take part from April 2013.

One month after the end of the course, if they apply to be a postgraduate doctor or dentist on a
Foundation Programme.
If they will be studying for part of a month, this will not be rounded up. For example, if their course will
last 11 months and three weeks, they will be granted an additional two months after the end of their
course. At the end of that time, they must leave the UK unless they have applied to extend their stay or
switch to another immigration category.
Degree level: 5-year cap
Some time limits were introduced on 6 April 2012 for degree level study. Any new Tier
4 application must lead to them spending no more than five years on courses at degree level. All time they
have had leave under Tier 4 (or as a pre-Tier 4 student) counts towards the 5 years, except for the short
extra time theyare given before the course (maximum one month) and after a course (maximum four
months).
There are some exceptions to the 5-year cap:
if they have successfully completed a UK degree course which was at least four years long, and
they are making a Tier 4 application to study a Masters degree at a higher education institution
(recognised body or institution in receipt of public funding), the limit is six years.
if their Tier 4 application is to study a PhD at a higher education institution, there is no limit while
they are studying the PhD.
if they have already completed a PhD in the UK, any new Tier 4 application is subject to an 8-year
limit (including courses below degree level). Courses in architecture, medicine, dentistry, veterinary
medicine and science, or music at a conservatoire, are exempt from the limit.
if they have completed a UK degree, and their current Tier 4 application is to study certain legal
qualifications (CPE, GDL/LPC or BPTC), the legal qualification is exempt from the limit
The UK Border Agency will not grant further leave to someone whose current Tier 4 application means
they will exceed these limits, unless there are compelling and compassionate circumstances, such as
injury or disability.

Emphasise to students that entry clearance and immigration is not an issue that can be left until the predeparture briefing.
Students apply for a visa after they have received a confirmation of acceptance for studies (CAS).
A CAS is an electronic reference number which is issued by the institution they wish to study at.
The CAS is valid for 6 months from the date it was issued by the institution.
Students should only submit an immigration application once they are sure they can also include all the
documents required to meet the Tier 4 requirements (but not more that 3 months before the course starts
date).
Two visa routes are available for studying English:
Tier 4 (General) visa: A Tier 4 (General) student can study an English language course. The
course must involve at least 15 hours a week of organised daytime study and it must lead to an
approved qualification. They will study at an institution which is a Highly Trusted or A-rated Tier 4
sponsor. Their course must lead to a qualification at level B2 of the Common European Framework of
Reference for Languages (CEFR). Otherwise, if they want to study an English language course which is
below level B2, or if they want to learn English at an institution which does not have a Tier 4 (General)
licence, they can apply to enter the UK as a student visitor.
Pre-sessional: If their course is a pre-sessional course which will prepare them for degree-level
study at the same institution (or at its partner institution), they may be issued with a single CAS which
includes both courses. In this case their immigration permission will end after the main course, rather
than after the presessional course. Their institution will only issue them with a single CAS if they meet
all of the associated requirements, They should make a note of the date that their immigration
permission ends. They must not remain in the UK after this date, unless they have already submitted
an immigration application for further leave to remain in the UK.
Student Visitor visa: it is also possible to study English on a Student visitor visa. Students
wishing to attend exclusively English language courses can apply for an Extended Student Visitor visa
allowing them to stay for up to 11 months (the standard Student Visitor visa is available for courses up
to six months in length). The Extended Student Visitor visa is only available to applicants outside the
UK.
A Tier 4 (General) student is from a majority English language speaking country if he/she is a
national of:

Jamaica New Zealand St Kitts and Nevis St Lucia St Vincent and the Grenadines Trinidad and

What level of English language competence must a student achieve to study in the UK?
Unless the student is a gifted student studying at a higher education institute and is a national of a
majority English-speaking country (see above), or has completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree
taught in English in a majority English-speaking country (Canada is not included) or has studied in the UK
as a Tier 4 (Child) student, they are required to demonstrate their English language at CEFR Level
B2 (equivalent to at least an IELTS 5.5) in each of the four subcomponents of language learning (reading,
writing, speaking and listening) if they are studying a course at NQF 6/QCF 6/SCQF 9 or above or CEFR
Level B1 if enrolling on a course at NQF 3-5/QCF 3-5/SCQF 6-8.
If their institution is not a higher education institution they will need to prove they have passed an
approved English language test:www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/visasimmigration/ studying/adultstudents/canyou-apply/english-language
Confirmation of acceptance for studies
A confirmation of acceptance for studies (CAS) is an electronic reference number which is issued by the
institution they wish to study at. The CAS is valid for six months from the date it was issued by the
institution. They should only submit an immigration application once they are sure they can also include all
the documents necessary to meet the Tier 4 requirements (but not more than three months before the
courses start date).
Money and maintenance funds
On their application they will need to show that they can cover course fees and living costs.Guidance is
available at www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/visas-immigration/studying
Students must show they have enough money to pay their course fees for the first year of their course (or
for the entire course, if it lasts less than a year). If they have already started their course and they are
applying to extend their stay so that they can continue that course, they must show that they have
enough money to pay their course fees to the end of the current academic year or for the next academic
year, if they are continuing their course at the start of the next academic year.
If they are applying to do a study abroad programme in the UK as part of an overseas course, they must
show that they have enough money to pay any necessary fees to the Tier 4 sponsor for the first year of
the programme (or for the entire programme, if it is less than a year long).

Their confirmation of acceptance for studies tells UKBA the amount of money they need to prove they
have in order to pay their course fees. If they do not know what this amount is, they must ask their Tier 4
sponsor. The monthly maintenance requirements state that they must show they have the required sum of
money for maintenance in their account for a period of 28 days (1,000 per month for nine months in
inner London and 800 per month for outer London or elsewhere in the UK. Up to a maximum of nine
months). This money must take the form of cash funds in the bank (including savings accounts and
current accounts, even when notice must be given), a loan letter, or official financial or government
sponsorship available to them. UKBA will add a declaration to the visa application form so that they must
confirm that the funds are genuinely available for the purpose of funding their study and upkeep in the
UK.
NOTE: The UK Border Agency now checks information about funds more carefully. It treats students more
favourably if they come from a low risk country:www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/visasimmigration/studying/adult-students/evidence
If theycan show that they have already paid all or some of their course fees before making

to show.

The finances a student will need to pass the points based assessment are:
The monthly maintenance requirements will increase for all applications made under the Points Based
System. Tier 4 (General) students who apply on or after 6 April 2012 must show 1000 per month if they
are studying in inner London, or 800 per month if they are studying elsewhere (up to a maximum of nine
months)
Dependants will be required to show 600 per month if the Tier 4 applicant is studying in inner London
and 450 per month if they are studying elsewhere in the UK.
Maintenance requirements will be reviewed by the UKBA annually.
For applications made on or after 6 April applicants can offset a maximum of 1,000 paid to a Tier 4
sponsor for accommodation against the Tier 4 maintenance requirements. Although institutions can still
request more than this amount from students, no more than 1,000 will be deducted from the level of
maintenance funds that the student must have held for 28 days.

From 10 January 2011, 'student visitors' have been able to enter the UK for a period of up to 11 months,
if they are studying exclusively on an English language course. For other short courses the current limit is
six months.
All student visitors who want to come to the UK for longer than six months must apply for entry clearance
(a visa). It is not possible to extend their stay in the UK after they have arrived.
Students should only come as a 'student visitor' if they are absolutely certain they will not want to work in
the UK and will not want to stay for longer than six months. They may not work at all during their time in
the UK.
'Student visitors' do not have to study full-time. There is no requirement for the course to lead to an
approved qualification.
Please refer to UK Border Agency information about student visitors
If students do come as a 'student visitor' they must show that they have been unconditionally accepted on
a course, that's provided by an organisation which is:
the holder of a Sponsor Licence for Tier 4
or
accredited by a UKBA accredited body
or
an overseas higher education institution offering only part of their degree programmes in the UK, holding

They will need to fill in the application form, pay a fee (currently 289) and provide:
documents to show they meet the maintenance requirements such as money in an account held
under the students name; this includes joint accounts or a loan in their name or government
sponsorship*

An Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) clearance certificate must be obtained for some
postgraduate students who need entry clearance to study in the UK. It will affect students who are
applying to take one of the following:
postgraduate studies leading to a Doctorate or Masters degree by research in one of the subjects
listed in paragraph 1 of Appendix 6 of the Immigration Rules; or
postgraduate studies leading to a taught Masters degree in one of the subjects listed in paragraph
2 of Appendix 6 of the Immigration Rules;
or
study or research in the UK of longer than six months, which is part of an overseas postgraduate
level course, in any subject listed in Appendix 6 of the Immigration Rules.
Web link:
Applications for at ATAS Clearance Certificate must be made online on the Foreign and Commonwealth
Office website at www.fco.gov.uk/atas This link also contains information about the scheme and the list of
designated subjects.
If a student needs an ATAS certificate and they dont have one, their entry clearance application will be
refused. A Tier 4 (General) student will need to apply for a new ATAS if:
he/she changes his/her course
or
the area of research/modules change for the course he/she originally applied to or
or
his/her Visa was issued on or after 30 November 2007, and he/she needs further permission to
stay for writing up a thesis.
If a Tier 4 (General) student is applying for further permission to stay to write up his/her thesis and
his/her previous visa did not require ATAS clearance as it was issued before 30 November 2007, ATAS
clearance is not required.

English Language requirements for pre-sessional courses followed by degree level courses
The concession that students who are issued a joint CAS for a pre-sessional course followed by a degree
level course can have an English language level of B1 (not B2) still remains. However, the transitional
concession that waived the Secure English Language Test (SELT) requirement for these students (where
their sponsor is an HEI and is satisfied that the student is at CEFR B1 in all for language components) will
not apply to CAS assigned on or after 6 April 2012. From 6 April
2012 these students must have a SELT to demonstrate that they meet the English language requirement
of CEFR B1.
As before, in order to issue a joint CAS the pre-sessional course must be no longer than three months, the
main course of study must start within one month of the end of the pre-sessional course, the place on the
degree level course must be unconditional and the pre-sessional course must be with the same education
provider as the main course of study, or with a partner institution named on the same sponsor licence.
Studying English in the UK
Students wishing to attend exclusively English language courses in the UK can now apply for a student visitor visa
allowing them to stay for up to 11 months.
This visa route, introduced in January 2011, gives English language students more flexibility when choosing an English
language course.
To be eligible for this visa, you must study a course at an education provider that has been accredited by governmentapproved organisations such as the British Council. The British Councils accreditation scheme checks and improves
standards in teaching, management, facilities and welfare. Choosing a course at a British Council accredited centre
guarantees high quality learning and value for money.
Tier 4 (General) Student visas
In March 2011, the UK government announced a number of changes to the Tier 4 student visa. Here are some of the key
changes for English language proficiency:
In order to be eligible for a Tier 4 'student visa', students will need to demonstrate a higher level of English than previously.
Those coming to study at degree level will have to speak English at an upper intermediate (B2) Secure English
language test (SELT) level. This is a higher that the previous B1 requirement.

B1 (SELT) is the appropriate level needed for lower courses, including the Pathways.
English language students wishing to attend exclusively English language courses below level B2 will be able to
apply for the 'student visitor visa' mentioned above, allowing them to stay for up to 11 months.
In order to get a visa, those outside of universities will have to present a test certificate from an independent test
provider proving they have attained that level; universities will be able to vouch for a students ability where they are
coming to study at degree level or above.
UKBA will waive this requirement for truly exceptional students only following individual requests by university
academic registrars
From April 2012, all institutions wishing to host international students will need to be accredited by statutory education
inspection bodies. This will give international students peace of mind that they are applying to a bona fide institution,
trusted and recognised by the UK government.
Tier 4 English language students - inspection of centres
The British Council's Accreditation UK scheme, managed in partnership with English UK, supports international students
who are studying or planning to study English in the UK by providing an independent assurance of quality in accredited
centres. The scheme accredits over 500 ELT centres in the private and public sectors through regular inspection by
independent ELT experts.
The UK Border Agency (UKBA) has recently announced that, in order to comply with the requirements for sponsoring
students, private sector institutions recruiting students on Tier 4 visas will have to be inspected by one of two statutory
bodies: the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) or the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA). Centres
accredited by Accreditation UK only are no longer valid to recruit students on Tier 4 visas, because Accreditation UK is not
a statutory body.
Accreditation by the British Council (through Accreditation UK) continues to be valid for recruiting:

long as the qualification is confirmed as the same as a UK degree qualification by UK NARIC. For further
guidance, see: www.ukcisa.org.uk
If they are applying for an extension to complete a current course or to undertake a further course they
will be required to provide evidence that they can pay the course fees (only the first year if the course is
longer) and just two months maintenance. Applications should be made within four months of the
completion of a previous course.
If they are completing a course of six months or less, including pre-sessional, and seeking an extension
within one month to go onto further studies they will also have to provide evidence that they can pay the
fees for the new course (only the first year if the course is longer) plus the maintenance costs per month
up to a maximum of nine months.
Anyone switching into the student route from outside Tier 4 will also be required to provide evidence that
they can pay fees for the course (up to one year if the course is longer) plus maintenance per month of
the course, up to a maximum of nine months.
Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)
It is the way in which UKBA grants extensions to students who wish to stay in the UK for more study. BRPs
used to be known as Identity Cards for Foreign Nationals (ICFNs). It is the shape of a credit card and
shows a photo of the student on the front, together with information about how long their extension is for.
It also shows whether they are allowed to do any work, and tells them if they are required to register with
the police.
The card includes a microchip which contains two of the card holders fingerprints, and the photo on the
front is a digital photo. As part of the process of applying for a student extension, they have to go and
give their fingerprints and have their photo taken (their biometrics). If they are sending an immigration
extension application by post, they must respond as soon as possible to any letters from UKBA asking
them to make an appointment to give their fingerprints and have their photo taken.
They will be given a very short deadline to respond to the letter, and if they do not respond in time, their
application may be refused or disregarded (although they will normally be given a warning first). That
could result in them not being able to stay in the UK. For that reason, it is sensible not to move address
while they have a pending extension application. If they have to move, they shoudl talk to the
international student adviser at their college or university to explain ther plans first, so they can advise
them of the safest way of notifying UKBA.

They need to prioritise attending the appointment over everything else. If this means they need to miss a
class or lecture, let their institution know. If they do not attend an appointment quickly, UKBA can refuse
or disregard their extension application. That could result in them not being able to stay in the UK.
If they are going to make their extension application in person (at a Public Enquiry Office), they will
probably not be sent any letters about biometrics but will have their fingerprints and photo taken at their
extension appointment. They will not be given their student extension (the BRP card) on the day but will
have to wait for it to be sent to them by post. They will probably receive their documents back from the
Home Office before they receive their identity card. They do not have their extension until they have the
card, which will be sent by post. They should not make any arrangements to travel until they have the
card because they do not know how long it will take. The costs are shown below:

Student visitors
Everyone except EEA and Swiss nationals must obtain entry clearance before travelling to the UK if they
want to enter as a student. However, visitors can come to the UK to study for a maximum of six months
as a 'student visitor'.
From 10 January 2011, students have been able to enter the UK as a student visitor for a period of up to
11 months if they are studying exclusively on an English language course. For other short courses the
current limit is six months (see above).
All student visitors who want to come to the UK for longer than six months must apply for entry clearance
(a visa). It is not possible to extend their stay in the UK after they have arrived.

Students must be at least 18 years old, and have the financial resources to accommodate and maintain
themselves during the visit.
Students should only come as a 'student visitor' if they are absolutely certain they will not want to work in
the UK and will not want to stay for longer than six months. 'Student visitors' do not have to study fulltime. There is no requirement for the course to lead to an approved qualification.

5. Accommodation
Theyve found a place to study
Now the search for somewhere to live begins. Its up to students to arrange their own accommodation.
Doing this before they leave home will save a huge amount of time and effort when they get to the UK.
Institution accommodation
For independent schools and colleges, accommodation is often included as part of the course and will be
arranged automatically on behalf of parents.
There are usually many different types of accommodation to choose from for students on a higher
education courses. The UKCISA guidance note on accommodation has a lot more information, download it
from: www.ukcisa.org.uk/student/information_sheets.php
Accommodation provided by the institution is probably more suitable for students coming to the UK for the
first time as it gives opportunities to get to know and socialise with other students new students.
Institutions provide different types of accommodation:
Halls of residence

Student halls owned by the institution are a great way to meet new people, and many lasting friendships
are formed in them. Usually on or near the campus. Here students live in study bedrooms, either alone or
sharing with another student, usually sharing bathroom facilities. Breakfast and an evening meal are
usually provided.
Self-catering halls
Here, accommodation is similar to halls of residence, but students can buy and prepare their own food,
sharing kitchen facilities with other students. Many international students prefer this type of
accommodation because they can choose what to eat and how the food is prepared.
Institution accommodation must be arranged before coming to the UK. When offered a place on a course a
student will usually be asked if he or she would like institution accommodation or alternative private
accommodation. All booking deadlines must be met to be sure of getting preferred accommodation.
Warning:
Insurance advise students to take out adequate room and/or contents insurance to
protect their personal belongings.
Privately owned accommodation
Accommodation in the private sector include shared flats or houses, lodgings, bedsits. Prices vary
considerably. This can be a more risky option than student accommodation, and your university housing
officer might not be able to help you if you run into problems with your landlord.
Flats and houses
Students may wish to share a furnished flat or house with friends after they have been in the UK for some
time. They will share all the rent, gas and electricity bills. This sort of accommodation can be cheaper than
others.
Lodgings
These consist of a rented room in a private house with the landlord or landlady living in the same house,
perhaps with their family. Meals may be provided and kitchen facilities used. Lodgings can provide good
company and support but students will not be completely independent.
Bedsits

A bed-sitting room is a single room for both living and sleeping. Cooking facilities may be in the bedsit or
elsewhere in the building. Bathroom facilities are normally shared. Bedsits give independence and a lot of
freedom, but may be lonely. They vary in size and quality so a student should never take a room without
seeing it first.
Accommodation for short stays
HOST is a charity; their aim is to help students and volunteers from overseas to make the most of their
time in the UK, and to promote international friendship and understanding. HOST brings together
international students in the UK with friendly families who welcome students to their home for a short
visit. HOST is looking at new ways to promote the scheme and for it to be seen as one of the many
benefits of coming to study in the UK. For further information visit www.hostuk.org/
Accommodation for mature students
If students plan to bring their families along, and are sure they have adequate finances to meet the extra
costs involved, we would advise them to travel ahead of their families, before their course begins. In order
to secure a suitable place to stay before the arrival of their dependants.
Accommodation for families in institution accommodation is extremely limited. In general, accommodation
will have to be found in the private sector, although the institutions accommodation office may be able to
provide advice and lists of suitable accommodation agencies. Some institutions have schemes under which
they manage accommodation on behalf of private landlords.
