Warm-up

The students will warm-up and


prepare for the lesson.

- Students will play the first 5 notes of the C Major


scale on whole notes, ascending and
descending.

8-10 minutes

Aura Lee pg. 21 in Yamaha Band


Student Book

The students will perform Aura


Lee with the correct fingering,
accurate articulations, and steady
rhythm.

- Students will play through Aura Lee as a group.


- Teacher will address any issues; i.e. inaccurate
rhythm, notes, articulations. (In particular, F#)
- Students will play through Aura Lee as a group
again.
- Each student will perform Aura Lee individually in
order to pass off pg. 21 in their books.

8-10 minutes

Surprise Symphony pg. 21 in


Yamaha Band Student Book

The students will perform


Surprise Symphony with the
correct fingering, accurate
articulations, and steady rhythm.

- Students will play through Surprise Symphony as


a group.
- Teacher will address any issues (paying special
attention to staccato vs. slurred rhythms).
- Students will play through Surprise Symphony as
a group again.
- Each student will perform Surprise Symphony
individually in order to pass off pg. 21 in their
books.

Home on the Range pg. 23

The students will sight-read


through these selections and get
a basic understanding of each
new piece.

- Students will look at Molly Malone and the


teacher will point out the pick-up measure and
explain. The teacher will also address the dotted
quarter note/eighth note rhythm.
- Students will sing dotted quarter note/eighth note
rhythm on ta
- Students will play through Molly Malone as a
group.
- Students will study the key signature/time
signature of Ode to Joy. Students will then sight
read the song.
- Students will turn to Home on the Range and
point out the pickup measure, the key signature
(remember Ab) and the tied dotted half notes.
- Students will sight read Home on the Range.

rehearse, refine, and determine when a piece is ready to perform.
