The teacher will provide demonstrations on clay work and facilitate discussions to introduce cultural concepts. Formative assessments include student reflections and sketches, while summative assessments consist of a rubric evaluation of the finished masks and presentations. ACQUIRE & APPLY

1. Discussion/Lecture:
Large group openly discuss new key terms and review
vocabulary/concepts with handout and by writing/drawing them on
the board. Start a discussion about cultural influences that we
experience in our everyday life. Guide the discussion towards
other cultures and talk about how cultural traditions are
incorporated in art. Refer to examples and explain how
techniques can be used to engage a viewer. Discuss symbols that
are used. Explain the assignment and expectations (to create a
clay mask that is influenced by cultural traditions).
2. Reflect:
Provide time for students to do a Track Your Thinking exercise
where they can write down/plan out/sketch their ideas and to
reflect on what was just presented. Allow students to discuss
their ideas with a neighbor.
3. Research
Have computers available for students to begin researching their
chosen culture. Review how to use the internet and books as
educational (trustworthy) resources.
4. Work time
The students will collect information about a culture and will
create a mask that represents that culture. Will provide
demonstration based on students development.
**Use the large and small group discussion to evaluate the student
involvement and excitement. Use a thumbs up/down/middle to

gauge how well the students understand the assignment and how
enthused they are.
