Acrylonitrile (AN)
The Asahi Kasei Group has operated under a series of 3- to 5-year management initiatives, each aligned to our strategic needs
of the time. The Ishin2000 initiative from fiscal 1999 to 2002 emphasized greater selectivity and focus in our operations, and
we reformed our business portfolio accordingly. During fiscal 2003 to 2005, we pursued selective diversification under the
Ishin-05 initiative as we expanded businesses and reinforced our financial strength. Our transformation to the structure of a
holding company with core operating companies took place during this period, as part of a major overhaul of our governance
structure. The core strategies of Growth Action 2010 between fiscal 2006 and 2010 were the expansion of overseas operations and the heightening of domestic businesses. We achieved further expansion and growth through business portfolio
realignment and strategic investments. The strategic advance of the Asahi Kasei Group continues under our current mediumterm initiative For Tomorrow 2015 which began in 2011.

Semiconductors (LSIs)
Our advanced mixed-signal LSIs feature low power consumption, high speed, and high precision.
Mixed-signal LSIs play an essential role in bridging the gap between the analog information of the
natural world and the digital information of electronic systems. Applications range from mobile
communications including smartphones to automobiles, industrial equipment, and infrastructural
equipment. The electronic compass, an advanced product which combines magnetic sensors and
LSIs in a single device, finds widespread use in smartphones and other portable devices.
This business includes environmentally friendly, high-performance materials for energy, such as
the Hipore lithium-ion rechargeable battery (LIB) separator. A flat microporous sheet of polyolefin, Hipore is the worlds leading separator membrane for LIBs used in smartphones, tablet PCs,
and other electronic applications. Available pore sizes range from 0.05 m to 0.5 m. Demand
is forecasted to increase notably in electric vehicle applications. Ongoing technological innovation and product development is advancing as part of our commitment as the market leader to
maintain stable product supply in accordance with emerging market needs.

n Magnetic sensors
Hall elements are high-performance magnetic sensors used for control of brushless motors in
optical disc drives and air conditioner fans, for image-stabilization mechanisms in digital cameras
and smartphones, as well as many other areas. Hall ICs, comprising a combination of Hall elements
and signal processing circuits, are used for mobile phone open/close detection switches and
automobile power windows. Utilizing the thin-film compound semiconductor technology gained
through experience in magnetic sensors, we are developing infrared (IR) sensors with smaller size
for an expanding range of applications.
Fine-pattern coils
Fine-pattern coils comprise precise, narrow, yet high-profile copper conductor patterns formed
on flat substrates using our unique precision lithography and plating technology. Taking the place
of wound wire to enable thinner and smaller electric motors, they are tailored to meet individual
customer requirements. Applications are expanding to include image-stabilization mechanisms of
digital still cameras and digital video cameras.

Our clinically advanced defibrillators are used in hospitals and by emergency medical services
teams to treat victims of sudden cardiac arrest, while our automated external defibrillators (AEDs)
can be found in schools, health clubs, businesses, and many other locations. Not every patient
will need a defibrillating shock, but virtually all will require cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), so
all ZOLL AEDs and nearly every professional defibrillator we build have Real CPR Help, real-time

Our LifeVest Wearable Defibrillator is worn by patients at risk for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA),
providing protection during their changing condition and while permanent SCA risk has not been
established. The LifeVest allows a physician time to assess the patients long-term arrhythmic risk
and make appropriate plans. The LifeVest is lightweight and easy to wear, enabling patients to
return to their activities of daily living, while having the peace of mind that they are protected from
SCA. The LifeVest continuously monitors the patients heart and, if a life-threatening heart rhythm
is detected, the device delivers a treatment shock to restore normal heart rhythm.
