1. General Information
Addiction #elcomes unsolicited research reports( re"ie#s( and letters
relatin/ to clinical( epidemiolo/ical( human e-perimental( policy0related
and historical aspects of any beha"iours that ha"e addicti"e potential
includin/( but not limited to( use of alcohol( opiates( stimulants( cannabis(
tobacco( and /amblin/. The acceptance rate is about 212. A list of the
types of articles Addiction publishes( #ith de3nitions and #ord limits( is
a"ailable "ia our #ebsite. 4e are #illin/ to ma5e e-ceptions to #ord
len/th stipulations in rare cases but other#ise #e encoura/e authors to
ma5e use of our facility to store supplementary material #ith the online
"ersion of the article. 6asic information is outlined belo#( but please also
see this list of the types of articles that Addiction publishes.
Addiction also publishes in"ited editorials, articles for debate,
commentaries on articles( interviews #ith leadin/ 3/ures in the 3eld(
and book reviews. Authors #ho are interested in contributin/ one of

Addiction #ill not normally commission commentaries( editorials or
re"ie#s from authors #ith a speci3c con:ict of interest as de3ned in our
con:ict of interest policy. ;either #ill it consider unsolicited re"ie#s
#ritten by authors #ith a speci3c con:ict of interest relatin/ to the topic of
the re"ie#.
Research reports should present ori/inal 3ndin/s and should not e-ceed
3$11 #ords e-cludin/ abstract( tables and references. <ualitati"e
manuscripts may be up to !$11 #ords to facilitate the inclusion of direct
quotations #ithin the main te-t( but this is in lieu of any tables. There is
no minimum len/th.
Reviews should normally be =systematic> ?i.e. adopt standard systematic

!ono"raphs' Addiction occasionally publishes mono/raphs of up to

%. Re&uirements for #ubmitted Articles
For information on ho# to #rite articles for Addiction( authors should loo5
at recent articles of the type they are proposin/ to submit. They should

2. *+values) Authors should cite e-act p "alues for primary statistical
tests. Addiction adopts the con"entional $2 "alue for statistical
si/ni3cance and does not accept terms such as =trend> for cases
#here pJ1.11.
3. References) References should follo# the basic numbered
)ancou"er style. ro"ide up to the 3rst si- authors and then follo#
by et al. IssueIpart numbers are not required. Ao not include
citations to conference abstracts or unpublished #or5. lease ensure
that the introduction and discussion sections of your article cite the
most recent rele"ant literature and not 9ust literature from your o#n
research /roup( re/ion or country. apers may include systematic
re"ie#s and one or t#o of the pi"otal studies that a re"ie# has

!. #ource veri,cation polic-) It is AddictionKs policy that all
statements made in articles or letters that refer to speci3c
indi"iduals or or/anisations and that contain assertions that could
be considered to be defamatory must be supported by #ritten
documented e"idence to support them. All such statements are
re"ie#ed by our le/al ad"isor and #ithout such documentation our
ad"isor cannot ma5e an appropriate ad9udication. It is important to
note that in libel la# the onus is on the person ma5in/ such
statements to pro"e them( not on the plainti, to sho# they are not
true.
$. Archivin" of source material) Authors are required to archi"e any
#eb references before citin/ them( usin/ 4eb%ite L technolo/y.

&. *ermission to reprint source material) If a paper uses all or
parts of pre"iously published material( the author must obtain
permission from the copyri/ht holder concerned. It is the author>s
responsibility to obtain these permissions in #ritin/ and pro"ide
copies to Addiction.
+. Randomised controlled trials) Report randomised controlled
trials usin/ the %*;S*RT /uidelines. Authors should include #ith
their manuscript a completed chec5list and :o# dia/ram in
accordance #ith the /uidelines. Reportin/ /uidelines ?STR*6E(
TRE;A( and RIS7A@' 4e e-pect authors #ho #ish to communicate
results from cohort( case0control( cross0sectional( non0randomised
e"aluations( or systematic re"ie#s and meta0analyses to re"ie#
/uidelines concernin/ their analysis and reportin/. lease consult
the Stren/thenin/ the Reportin/ of *bser"ational studies in
Epidemiolo/y ?STR*6E@( the Transparent Reportin/ of E"aluations
#ith ;onrandomiMed Aesi/ns ?TRE;A@( or the referred Reportin/
Items for Systematic Re"ie#s and 7eta0Analyses ?RIS7A@. A
completed chec5list and :o# dia/ram should be included as an
appendi- to the submitted manuscript follo#in/ the appropriate
/uideline. If particular items in the chec5list are not applicable then
9ust put =nIa>.
.. *revalence surve-s) Addiction #elcomes such studies but does
not publish sur"eys that primarily focus on describin/ pre"alence
that is already 5no#n to a lar/e de/ree. Studies that document the
start of a ne# =epidemic> of a particular dru/ use mi/ht be
considered( but lar/ely descripti"e data on the pre"alence of a
particular type of dru/ use in a particular place is not encoura/ed.
4e do encoura/e sur"eys that use a cross0sectional study to
describe an association #here that association is not #ell
established.
N. .linical trials) Addiction normally requires clinical trials to be
re/istered in a publicly accessible database. The name of the trial
re/ister and the clinical trial re/istration number should appear on
the front pa/e of the manuscript. A full list of re/isters can be found
"ia the 4O* International %linical Trials Re/istry latform ?I%TR@.
11. /ehavioural interventions) E"aluations in"ol"in/
beha"ioural inter"entions must include full manuals or protocols ?or
at least "ery detailed descriptions@ of those inter"entions as
supplementary 3les to be included published #ith the online "ersion
of the article.
11. 0isto"rams) Ao not include histo/ram 3/ures #ith three0
dimensional bloc5s or shadin/ as this can ma5e interpretation
diEcult.
12. Fi"ures) Fi/ures should normally be included in the 4ord
document but #here necessary they can be sent as additional 3les.
All photo/raphs( /raphs and dia/rams should be referred to as
3/ures in the te-t and should be numbered consecuti"ely in Arabic
numerals ?e./. =Fi/. 3>@. A list of le/ends for the 3/ures should be
submitted on a separate sheetH le/ends should include 5eys to any
symbols. In the full0te-t online edition of the 9ournal( 3/ure le/ends
may become truncated in abbre"iated lin5s to the full0screen
"ersion. Therefore( the 3rst 111 characters of any le/end should
inform the reader of 5ey aspects of the 3/ure.
13. .olour illustrations) It is the policy of Addiction for authors
to pay the full cost for reproducin/ colour art#or5. Therefore( please
note that if there is colour art#or5 in your manuscript #hen it is
accepted for publication( 4iley06lac5#ell require you to complete
and return a colour #or5 a/reement form before your paper can be

2. 1thical *rinciples
The 9ournal supports the ethical principles enshrined in The Farmin/ton
%onsensus. As such( #hen submittin/ papers online( authors ill be as5ed
to state that

2. the paper is not currently bein/ considered for publication

3. all authors ha"e been personally and acti"ely in"ol"ed in

!. all rele"ant ethical safe/uards ha"e been met in relation to patient
or sub9ect protection( or animal e-perimentation( includin/( in the
case of all clinical and e-perimental studies re"ie# by an
appropriate ethical re"ie# committee and #ritten informed patient
consent. It is e-pected that the research #ill comply #ith the 4orld
7edical Association Aeclaration of Oelsin5i.
Addiction adheres to the de,nition of authorship set up b- the
International .ommittee of !edical 3ournal 1ditors 'I.!31(( #hich
requires authorship to be based upon@ substantial contributions to the
conception and desi/n of the study( acquisition of data( or analysis and
interpretation of dataH b@ draftin/ the article or re"isin/ it critically for
important intellectual contentH and c@ 3nal appro"al of the "ersion to be
published. E"ery author should meet conditions a( b and c.
4eclarations of interest are re&uired for all submissions and should
appear after the list of authors and addresses. These should declare
sources of fundin/( direct or indirect( and any connection of any of the
researchers #ith the tobacco( alcohol( pharmaceutical or /amin/
industries or any body substantially funded by one of these or/anisations.
Authors are also required to declare any 3nancial con:ict of interest
arisin/ from in"ol"ement #ith or/anisations that see5 to pro"ide help #ith
or promote reco"ery from addiction. Any contractual constraints on
publishin/ imposed by the funder must also be disclosed. Aeclarin/ a
con:ict of interest is the responsibility of authors and authors should err
on the side of inclusi"eness. If an undeclared confict of interest
comes to light, we reserve the right to publish this prominently
and to place it on a public register using words along the lines of
'[name] has the following confict of interest which h/she has not
declared'.
As a precaution a/ainst fraud and "iolation of ethical principles( Addiction
may as5 authors for ori/inal data or copies of ori/inal supportin/
paper#or5 durin/ the re"ie# process.
If serious "iolation of these ethical standards has been found to occur ?e./.
fraud( attempts at duplicate publication or failure to declare ob"ious and
ma9or con:icts of interest@( Addiction may ta5e action beyond re9ectin/ the
manuscript( includin/ barrin/ authors from submittin/ to the 9ournal or
reportin/ authors to appropriate authorities.

5. $he Review *rocess
Addiction recei"es .11T manuscripts each year and it is not practicable
for all of these to under/o full re"ie#. Therefore #e operate the follo#in/
system. Each manuscript is read by a Senior Editor and those that are
considered clearly uncompetiti"e or unsuited to this 9ournal #ill be turned
do#n #ithout /oin/ to full re"ie#. This happens to appro-imately 312 of
manuscripts. This process should ta5e no more than ! #ee5s.
7anuscripts that pass this sta/e are sent to an Assistant Editor #ho
in"ites re"ie#s and on the basis of these ma5es a recommendation to the
Senior Editor. The Senior Editor #ill then communicate his or her o#n
decision to the authors( ta5in/ account of the comments and
recommendations recei"ed from the Assistant Editor and re"ie#ers. This
process should ta5e no more than 12 #ee5s.
If authors are in"ited to re"ise a manuscript and resubmit it( they should
aim to submit the re"ised "ersion #ithin 3 months. A decision on the
re"ised "ersion may by ta5en by the Senior Editor or he or she may
consult an Assistant Editor or put the re"ision throu/h another full re"ie#
process( dependin/ on the nature of the re"isions that had been
requested. A decision on the re"ised "ersion should normally ta5e less
time than the ori/inal re"ie# process.
6. *roof .orrections
4hen proofs are ready( the correspondin/ author #ill recei"e an email
alert containin/ a lin5 to a #eb site. It is therefore important that the
correspondin/ author pro"ide a current( #or5in/ email address. The proof
can be do#nloaded as a AF ?portable document format@ 3le from this
site. Acrobat Reader #ill be required in order to read this 3le. This soft#are
can be do#nloaded free of char/e from the Adobe #ebsite. The 3le can be
opened( read on screen( and printed out in order for any corrections to be
added. Further instructions #ill be sent #ith the proof. In your absence(
please arran/e for a collea/ue to access your e0mail to retrie"e the proofs.
roofs must be returned to the roduction Editor #ithin three days of
receipt.
As chan/es to proofs are costly( #e as5 that you only correct typesettin/
errors. E-cessi"e chan/es made by the author in the proofs( e-cludin/

the publisher. lease note that the author is responsible for all statements

7. $-pes of *ublication
1. Accepted Articles
Addiction is co"ered by 4iley06lac5#ell>s Accepted Articles ser"ice.
Accepted Articles publishes peer re"ie#ed( accepted articles are
online #ithin ten days of their acceptance for publication( prior to
their ultimate inclusion in a print or online issue and #ithout ha"in/
been copy0edited. This ser"ice ensures the earliest possible
circulation of research papers immediately after acceptance.
Readers should note that articles published #ithin Accepted Articles
ha"e been fully refereed( but ha"e not been throu/h the copy0
editin/ and proof correction process. The Society for the Study of
Addiction and 4iley06lac5#ell cannot be held responsible for errors
