HR Metrics Benchmarking Worksheet
3 4 5 This page shows a graphical display of your metrics benchmarked against those of comparable companies of the size and industry you selected on the Inputs Worksheet. Benchmarks by Size and Industry Lists benchmarks for all metrics by company size. Lists benchmarks for all metrics by company industry. Size Benchmarks Industry Benchmarks Source for all metrics including benchmarks, definitions, and formulas except Time-to-Fill are from the CEB HR Leadership Council's 2010 Budget, Spend & Efficiency Survey and the Corporate Leadership Council's Turnover Benchmarking Survey. Time-to-fill benchmarks and definitions were obtained from the SHRM Human Capital Benchmarking Study 2006 Executive Summary. HR Management & Strategy Design & Execution Center This tool provides a personalized scorecard with size and industry benchmarks for metrics in four key competency areas of HR performance: HR- Employee Staffing Ratios, HR Cost Ratios, Workforce Turnover, and Recruiting and Training Efficiency. Displays your HR metrics in four categories based on the inputs you provided from the previous page. To the left of each number, the metric name and formula are shown. All metrics calculation is done by Excel after you enter the inputs. Inputs Your Metrics Roster 1 2 Provides instructions and space for entering key HR measurement inputs that will drive metric calculation later in the tool. This page also allows you to select your company size and industry so you can view personalized benchmarking graphs. HR Metrics Worksheet HR Management & Strategy Design & Execution Center Metric Inputs and Definitions Input Definition Your Number Human Resources Function Operating Expense The HR department's total operating expense for the last fiscal year. Included are those expense items for the traditional HR functions (e.g. Compensation, Benefits, Staffing, Employee Relations, Training). Include all expenses that would be charged to the HR Budget. Exclude training expenses funded outside of HR (e.g., by the business unit). $700,000 Human Resources Function FTEs The total number of full time human resources employees. This includes anyone staffed within the HR department, even in non-traditional HR roles such as internal communications or employee training staff. 30 Involuntary Separations Total number of employees involuntarily separated during the last fiscal year. An involuntary separation is one that is initiated by the organization rather than the employee. 10 Staffing Expense The total cost incurred during the last fiscal year for all staffing activities. Included are advertising costs, agency fees, referral bonuses, relocation/travel costs, job fair expenses, college-recruiting -related expenses, salaries and benefits costs for the HR staffing function, etc. Excluded are hiring bonuses. $800,000 Total Days Until Positions Filled Added together for each available position that was filled during the last fiscal year, the number of days from when a job requisition was opened until the offer was accepted by a candidate. This number is calculated using calendar days, including weekends and holidays. 9,000 Total Employees The average monthly number of all full-time and part-time employees on staff during the last fiscal year. Excluded are temporary and contract workers (individuals who work on company premises and under company supervision, but who are sponsored and paid by temporary help organizations). 4000 Total FTE Employees The average monthly number of all full-time and full-time equivalent (FTE) employees. Part-time employees are those who work less than the normal hours per week. To convert part-timers to FTEs, sum all part-time hours and divide by baseline annual hours (e.g. 40 weekly hours x 52 weeks = 2080 annual hours). This number is then added to the number of total full-time employees to give you the total full-time equivalent (FTE) employees. Excluded are temporary and contract workers. 3500 Total Hires The total number of employees hired during the last fiscal year. A hire is considered to be the addition of an employee to the payroll. Excluded are employees reinstated after returning from a leave of absence and employees who have transferred within the organization. 300 Total Separations The total number of employees separated during the last fiscal year, whether voluntary or involuntary. A separation includes any employee who is removed from payroll, including those employees collecting severance benefits. Excluded are those employees on leave of absence or those who have transferred within the organization, and temporary/contact workers. 350 Training Expense Training expenses include organizational development and effectiveness, leadership development, diversity, work-life, and succession planning. Also include training staff travel expenses, administrative expenses, and delivery expenses. Excludes training expenses not funded by HR. These expenses include the compensation and benefits cost for all HR staff specializing in this function directly. $900,000 Voluntary Separations The total number of employees voluntarily separated during the last fiscal year. A voluntary separation is one that is initiated by the employee rather than the organization and includes those resulting from voluntary retirement, illness, or death.
