Both: A pleasant morning to everyone!
Alyanna: I am Alyanna F. Evangelista Juvie Dawn: And I am Juvie Dawn R. Maquilan Alyanna: The title of our study is Determinants of Academic Performance of Nursing Students Juvie Dawn: Since 1970s many researchers examined how college students study and have explored factors that correlate with more effective study approaches. They also investigated determinants of individual academic success. The study aimed to establish the determinants that affect academic performance and the level of academic performance of nursing students in school year 2013-2014. Alyanna: This theory is anchored on Jean Piagets Cognitive stage of development. Series of stages based on age with the child at each successive stage demonstrating a higher level of functioning than at previous stages. Since our respondents ages ranges from 17- 29 , they belong to formal operation stage, in which they have their own mind and thoughts , understands and recognize individuals, different interest, knowledge and ways of thinking. Juvie dawn: Specifically, its objectives were to: 1.) Describe the demographic characteristics of the respondents in terms of Age, Gender and Family Income; 2.) Identify the level of academic performance of nursing students; 3.) Identify the factors that affect academic performance in terms of Environmental Factors, Psychological Factors and Teachers Factors; 4.) Correlate the relationship between academic performance and: Demographic Profile, Environmental Factors, Psychological Factors, Teacher Factors; and 5) Identify the variables best predict academic performance. Alyanna: We used descriptive method of research. Because it aimed to determine the determinants of academic performance of nursing students by identification, description and documentation of all aspects of the research study. Juvie dawn: The study was conducted in Central Mindanao University, University town, Musuan, Maramag, Bukidnon; Mountain View College Annex, Bagon Taas, Valencia, Bukidnon; and Bukidnon State University Malaybalay City, Bukidnon. Alyanna:: The respondents of the study were the nursing students from 2 nd to 4 th year level who were officially enrolled in 1 st
semester of the school year 2013 -2014. Juvie dawn: The Data were collected using a questionnaire originally formulated by Prado (2002) revised version by Omamalin and Villegas (2012) and by Penaso (2008). This set of questionnaire was again modified by the researchers to meet the objective of the study. This tool was tested for reliability and validity through a pilot study. With a reliability score of 0.92. Alyanna: After the pilot study, we then proceed to conduct the study by distributing the questionnaire to the respondents. Due to the following reason, the researchers encountered some difficulties and hindrances in achieving the complete enumeration of the respondents in School C because of the long distance; will not coincide to the researchers and respondents schedule; and due to respondents different schedules that unable to meet them during the time of conducting the study; there were also respondents who rejected to participate in the study. Regarding to the cumulative grade, the school only gave all 2 nd year to 4 th year students major subject grades, but didnt allowed to include the students name in which the researchers unable to identify the respondents individual grades. As a result, the researchers decided to utilize the datas gathered from the pilot study to meet the objectives of the study. In relation to this, the researchers favoured to use a random sampling using the slovins formula instead of complete enumeration, unfortunately the required number of respondents didnt achieved because of the said reasons. Lastly, data were subjected to statistical analysis. Juvie dawn : The researchers used a complete enumeration in Central Mindanao University since the total populations were only 51 nursing students from 2 nd year to 4 th year and random sampling in Mountain View College and Bukidnon State University since these schools had larger population. A descriptive statistics was used to describe the respondents demographic characteristics; correlation statistics was used to determine the relationship of respondents environmental factors, psychological factors, teacher factors and academic performances; regression statistics was used to identify the determinants that best predict academic performance. Alyanna: We will now proceed to discussion of the results. In table 1, it shows Percentage distribution of Respondents Demographic Profile. It can be seen from the Table 1 that respondents age ranges from 17-29 years of age. Most of the respondents were ranges from 17-20 (74.3%) years of age; 2124 (19.4%) years of age; and 25-29 (3.6%) years of age of the total population. They were 5 (2.92%) of the respondents who didnt respond. The majority of the students were ranges from 17-20 (74.3%). The same table shows that majority of the respondents were female. There were 135 females (78.9%) and only 36 (28.1%). As to respondents family income, 59 of them had more than 20,000 family income (34.5%); 45 of them (26.3%) had 15,000 to 20,000 family income; 31 (18.1%) had a family income of 10,000 to 15,000; 20 (11.7%) of them had a family income of 5,000 to 10,000; 8 (4.7%) of them had a family income of less than 5,000. They were 8 (4.68%) of the respondents who didnt respond. The majority of the students family income had more than 20,000 family income (34.5%). Juvie dawn : As revealed in table 2. The respondents from School A and School B has a cumulative grade ranges from 2.25 to 2.49, 20 (22.47%); 17 (19.10%) of the students has a cumulative grade of 2.0 2.24; 14 (15.73%) of the students has a cumulative grade of 1.0 1.24; 13 (14.61%) of the students has a cumulative grade of 1.25 1.49; 12 (13.48%) of the students has a cumulative grade of 1.75 1.99; 11 (12.36%) of the students has a cumulative grade of 1.50 1.74; and only 2 (2.25%) of the students got the grade of 2.50 2.74. The level of academic performance from school A and school B had an Average with a cumulative grade ranges from 2.25 2.49 (22.47%). The school C wasnt included in the discussion because the researchers cannot identify their level of academic performance. Alyanna : As you can see in table 5, it shows that the nursing students of the three schools unanimously Agree (over all AWM = 4.29) to the given 8 indicators. With decreasing sequence, these were 1) I will achieve my goals in life (AWM=4.82); 2) Having good grades can give me a better future (AWM=4.59); 3) I receive encouragement from family and friends (AWM=4.45); 4) I have fear of academic failure (AWM=4.42); 5) I promised for a good performance (AWM=4.37); 6) My friends are supportive whenever I need help (AWM=4.19); 7) I have rewards given by my parents (AWM=3.78); 8) I receive teachers recognition in class (AWM=3.71). Juvie dawn: The table 6 shows that the nursing students of the three schools unanimously Agree (overall AWM = 4.44) to the given 21 indicators. With decreasing sequence, these were: 1) I will have positive attitude towards my studies (AWM=4.65); 2) I will have positive attitude towards my studies (AWM=4.64); 3) I will be more responsible (AWM=4.60); 4) I will be able to plan my future work (AWM=4.60); 5) I will be more persevering in my studies (AWM=4.56); 6) I will budget my time wisely in my studies (AWM=4.54); 7) I will develop proper study habit and attitude (AWM=4.53); 8) I will develop the ability to concentrate on my studies (AWM=4.52); 9) I will be more persevering in my studies (AWM=4.52); 10) I will be neat and systematic in my school work (AWM=4.50); 11) I will know my interest, abilities and attitudes (AWM=4.49); 12) I will be more considerate to others (AWM=4.47); 13) I will have strong moral convictions (AWM=4.46); 14) I will express myself better (AWM=4.45); 15) I will be able to relate well with others (AWM=4.42); 16) I will know more about my strong and weak points (AWM=4.41); 17) I will overcome nervousness when taking examinations, oral recitation and return demonstration (AWM=4.24); 18) I will overcome constant need for emotional support (AWM=4.24); 19) I will feel comfortable when speaking before group (AWM=4.24); 20) I will have self confidence during examinations, oral recitation and return demonstration (AWM=4.21); and 21) I will be more dependable (AWM=4.01). In general students have positive aspirations. Alyanna: As shown in Table 9, generally with an overall weighted mean (AWM = 4), the nursing students of the three schools Frequently cultivated the listed 5 Teaching Practices. These 5 Teaching Practices were: 1) Having unannounced quiz (AWM=4); 2) Checking of attendance every meeting (AWM=4); 3) Having the students read in advance (AWM=4); 4) Having devotional and inspirational videos/messages before starting a class (AWM=4); 5) Strictly set a deadline regarding assignments/requirements (AWM=5). Juvie dawn : Next, we will discuss the relationship of the Relationship of the Determinants towards Academic Performance of the Respondents. The table 10 shows, that there was a significant relationship between the respondents age and their academic performance but no significant relationship between the respondents sex and family income and their academic performance. With regards to the age of the respondents, Nuthana (2007) stated that age plays a significant role on academic performances. This was supported by Olajedo (2010) in his study conducted in University of Ibadan, Nigeria that age made the highest contribution to students academic performance. With regards to gender, Robinson (1994) studied and conducted regarding biological sex and its impact on academic achievement. However, they report conflicting issues.
Alyanna: The table 13 shows that there was significant relationship between respondents motivation and academic performance. These findings agreed with the study of According to Othtis (1995) motivation is the enthusiasm of a person to do something while learning style is the method used by a certain student or person to study much easier and more efficiently. Ibids and Kizlik (1997) added that person gets motivated when they realize that the things in their minds are necessary to succeed in college. In connection to this, Sheets (1994) in regards to motivation states that motivation can influenced greatly by your purpose in learning, Study habits would not exist without the motivation. Juvie dawn : The table 14 shows that there was significant relationship between aspiration and academic performance. These findings agreed with the study of Gutman and Akerman (2008) wherein it showed that Young people who believe they have the ability to achieve and who attribute their success to hard work rather than luck or fate have higher aspirations. Alyanna: The table 17 shows that there was a significant relationship between teaching practices and the respondents academic performance. These results substantiated by Zollman and Emanual (1992) who emphasized that there is significant evidence that teachers beliefs influence their instructional practices and classroom performance. Herrington and Cockcroft (1992) as well as the study of Kaplan (1991), strongly support those classroom teachers beliefs about the subject they are teaching being related to the way teacher teach the subject and teachers adherence to a particular set of beliefs may set limits on learning by students. Juvie dawn: The table 18 shows, that there was a significant relationship between the respondents Age, Students Motivation, Students Aspiration, Teaching Practices and the respondents Academic Performance. The variables that best predict Academic Performance in a decreasing order is, Age (-.381**); Students Aspiration (.284**); Students Motivation (.240*); Teaching Practices (- .236*). Alyanna: In our conclusion, The majority of respondents age ranges from 17 to 20 years old. Most of the respondents were female. Most of them had a family income of more than 20,000. The Academic Performance of the nursing students from School A and School B has a cumulative grade of 2.25-2.49 which marked as AVERAGE. In terms of environment, majority of the respondents are living in their own house. Moreover, respondents preferred to study alone, chose to study before going to sleep and preferred to study on their room. Most of the respondents took a nap as their most favourite study break. It was also revealed in the study that noise is the main cause that can hinder their learning. However, other independent variables which were the age, students motivation, students aspiration and teaching practices had significant relationship to their academic performance specifically: To their Environment: when in terms to the place where they live; whether the atmosphere of their school is good. To their Motivation: received encouragement from their family and friends. Juvie dawn : To their Aspiration: will overcome constant need for their emotional support, will overcome nervousness when taking examinations, oral recitation and return demonstration; will know more about their strong and weak points; will develop the ability to concentrate on their studies; will be neat and systematic in school work; will be more persevering in their studies; will sustain interest in their studies; will develop proper study habit and attitude; will budget the time wisely in their studies; will be able to relate well with others; will budget the time wisely in their studies; will be able to relate well with others; will be able to plan their future work; will have positive attitude towards their studies; will improve their reading skills and enrich their vocabulary; Teaching Practices: having devotional and inspirational videos/messages before starting a class. Therefore, the hypothesis stands rejected. Juvie dawn : It is recommended that that the future researchers will improve the tool, add relevant questions and add factors that affect academic performance. Moreover, as to the respondents consent, they will have a formal consent to be able to get the needed data especially as to the level of academic performance of nursing students. It is also suggested that the teachers should improve and maintain their teaching practices that may help the level of academic performances of nursing students, especially those practices that will inspire students for the betterment of their grades. And lastly, the students are advised to focus on their motivation and aspiration for them to have a good academic performance. More so, this may be a basis that will lead them to pass licensure exams of their respective profession. Juvie Dawn: Thats all, thank you for listening. The presenters is now ready for comments, suggestions and questions.
