Sophie's World (
Sophie's World is a 1991 novel by Norwegian author Jostein Gaarder that follows teenage girl Sophie Amundsen as she receives mysterious letters and philosophy lessons from middle-aged philosopher Alberto Knox. Alberto teaches Sophie about the history of philosophy from the ancient Greeks to 20th century philosophers. The story also involves Sophie's friend and a character named Hilde who learns Sophie's world is a story created by Hilde's father as a gift. Sophie's World explores philosophical concepts and questions and has sold over 30 million copies internationally since publication. It has also been adapted into a film, TV shows, a computer game, and a song.
