that locked in breads freshness. The G-lock was an immensely thoughtful innovation suggesting all the vital information that the consumers might need such as the best before date, suggested retail price and batch number. Or maybe Gardenia had just become a habit. And yet, Gardenia was a premium brand, even at the outset. There were cheaper loaves in the market, but even at a time when the economy was a little shaky, people continued to prefer Gardenia. The crux of Gardenias success lies in the fact that they never underestimated us the people who buy their breads. Gardenia puts our needs first. They knew we wanted our bread to taste good. In fact, their recipe has been so successful; Gardenia has proudly claimed the tag, Masarap kahit walang palaman. Then, theres the allimportant aroma. Who doesnt love the smell of freshly baked bread? Open a bag of Gardenia and inhale. `Nuff said. We also want our bread soft because we often equate hardness with stale bread. Observe how people squeeze and pinch bags of bread before putting them in their cart. But Gardenia has gone a step further by making sure the bread doesnt fall apart when we spread hard butter on it or when we roll a slice to eat it. Being consumer-focused, Gardenia provided a wide array of bread choices for consumers. Their breads are known for their nutritive value and are all fortified with essential vitamins and minerals. Through the years, Gardenia has responded to our changing tastes. They introduced the immensely popular and super healthy High Fiber Wheat Bread loaf in 1998. Two years later, the buns and the flavored loaves, like the California Raisin and Chocolate Chip loaves, were introduced in the market. And then, in succession, they gave us the Filipinos all-time favourite Pan de Sal, delicious mini wonders, addictive muffins, our Cream Roll favourites, amazing flavored loaves and the best-selling high fiber wheat bread studded with raisins and cranberries. Behind the scenes, Gardenia was making revolutionary changes as well in the way they baked, packaged and distributed their soughtafter breads. They started their full operations in 1998 with the 2K plant, with a capacity of 2,000 loaves per hour. Then they inaugurated another plant in 2002 capable of producing 4,000 loaves of bread per hour. A year later, Gardenia stuck two more feathers in their cap. They received the coveted ISO Certification in compliance with Quality Management System and product quality excellence. This is awarded only to companies that comply with globally accepted manufacturing standards meant to ensure the high-
dustry awarded Gardenia the Pro-active Program Achievement Awards for three categories, namely Labor Management Relationship, Family Welfare/ Community Relations, and Quality and Productivity. This accolade shows that even in a time of corporate expansion, Gardenia has understood the fundamentals of governing their business putting people first, whether employees, the community or us who remain loyal to their super sarap quality breads. So in the next 15 or so years, the kids who grew up on Gardenia are likely to bring up a new generation of kids who will also equate sarap at the breakfast table with nothing more-and nothing less-than Gardenia.

An integral part of true worship of God given to ancient Israel is feasting. Are Christians now required to have festivities the way the Israelites did?
The annual feast celebration by the different religion has roots from the ancient times. There were three great festivals, (1) Festival of Unfermented Cakes written in the Book of Exodus, Chapter 23:15; (2) Festival of Weeks or later called Passover (Exodus 23:16); and (3) Festival of Booths (Tabernacles) or Ingathering (Leviticus 23:34-36. Noteworthy, the time, place and how the festivals conducted were under God Jehovahs instruction. The festivals are time of great rejoicing. Their festivities were different from this period, because no one could claim God is the one giving instructions. Unlike in the ancient period
God through His angels, messengers could appear visible to human eyes or in dreams. Festivals were held as thanksgiving for the first fruits of the vineyards that brought happiness to the Israelites in recognition of Jehovahs generousness. It was an appreciation for all good things God had given them. Noticeable is the requirement addressed only to all males as we could read in Deuteronomy. Chapter 16, Verses 16-17: Three times in the year every male of yours should appear before Jehovah your God in the place that he will choose: in the festival of the unfermented cakes and in the festival of weeks and in the festival of booths, and

People of this highly urbanized city of Tacloban are glad at the news that permit was granted by the City Mayor for the Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival to be held on the day it was originally conducted for years, that is June 29 of every year. It would be recalled that for some years, the festival had been one of the major highlights on the vespers day of the Feast of Seor Santo Nio de Leyte. The festival was organized to fill the fiesta celebration in the city of Tacloban after the dance-parade that was originally dubbed as sayawit which later evolved into sangyaw was not sustained after it was showcased for some years
sometime in the eighties. The event was participated in by the various schools in the city. The Pintados Festival that was participated in by schools and organizations in the city later swelled into a bigger event that was called the Festival of Festivals which was later dubbed as Kasadyaan Festival, drawing participation from various local government units in and outside of the province. The annual parade showcasing painted bodies and decorated floats with merrymakers going into a painting spree along the route of the parade became a regular presentation that entertained visitors and tourists during the fiesta celebration.
all of us insofar as we are Gods creatures and children called to holiness. Regardless of our position and state in life, whether we are priests, religious men and women, or ordinary lay faithful, we have the same calling and purpose in life. Corollary to this truth is that there is also a basic and inalienable quality of everything in the world to be an occasion and means for our sanctification. To be holy does not mean that we only spend time praying, going to church, availing of the sacraments, etc. To be sure, prayer, the sacraments, the doctrine of our faith, obedience to the Church hierarchy are important, even indispensable, but these would hang on thin air if they are not supported and made as the goal and expression of a sanctified life that is consistent to the teachings and the spirit of God. To be holy also means that we have to use our ordinary work, all the things of the world, like the sciences, arts, politics, technologies, etc., properly purified, and all the other circumstances that define our daily life as an occasion and means to look for God, then find, love and serve him. Theres a need to cultivate a unity of life that is inspired by love of God and neighbor and oriented toward the definitive eternal life with God in heaven. We cannot divide our life in two disparate partsone meant for holiness, and another meant only for some worldly affairs. We only have one life that is both human and
meant to be supernatural with God. We just have to learn how to blend the different aspects of our life without erasing the legitimate distinctions among them. What is material and natural should remain material and natural. But we need to know how to infuse them with the spiritual and the supernatural proper of us as Gods creatures made in his image and likeness and meant to share in his divine life. We can do this spiritualizing and supernaturalizing of what is material and natural in us by simply sanctifying the latter, that is, offering them to God since they all come from God and also belong to him. Because of that, we do them as best as we can at any given moment, even if our best can always be made better later on. A work sanctified in this way always sanctifies us and the world itself as well. Obviously, to sanctify our work by offering it to God and by doing it very well involves uniting our work with the supreme sacrifice of Christ on the Cross. We just cannot sanctify our work by having the best intentions and doing it well. That work has to be made an integral part of the supreme offering of our Redeemer, Christ himself. Otherwise, that work would not be truly sanctified. That is why, we need to unite our work with the doctrine of our faith, with the sacraments, and with our active participation in the life of the Church.

The drinking water at home comes from 3 5-gallon mineral water plastic jugs delivered weekly by a nearby supplier. The other finding was only probably true at that time, because by 6 p.m. of that same day, the water that filled my testing bottles still showed, [visible to my eyes when the bottle was placed against a CFC bulb light (which I normally do when examining the clear water output from the faucet after the meter)], a tiny yellowish fiber about 1/8-inch long, and a very small and very thin, whitish and filmlike matter. If the crew just examined the Coke bottles (2 near the kitchen egress and 1near the water meter), or thought about the clear (filled Wednesday evening) water in those bottles, they could have seen the floaters with their own eyes. I dont think they even thought of the probability that the water in the glass that they used for testing and tasting had those tiny dirt matters.

like these days, thieves take the opportunity to do their wicked acts while householders are away attending fiestas. Attending festivities in the past was an opportunity to demonstrate allegiance to God Jehovah, not only by the Israelites, but by alien residents living with them. But, these alien residents were circumcised worshipers of Jehovah. If they were uncircumcised their offerings were unacceptable. During the festivals,
the priests had tremendous amount of work. They were the ones entrusted to the success of the feasting. Unlike these days, the civil government are the ones arranging the programs for the festivities leaving the religious leaders merely leading their flock to pray. Festivals were very important in the life of the Israelites. One occasion was when Moses told Pharaoh to allow the Israelites in bondage to be freed to celebrate their annual festivals. and owning in the celebration of the fiesta. As to whether next years celebration will already be led by one hermano mayor is a matter that the current set of priests will leave to the discretion of the next set of priests and the new PPC. Opiniano, Petilos and Rev. Fr. Amadeo Alvero are among the many priests in the Archdiocese who due for transfer by January 2014 per the Archdiocese-wide policy. To be left at the SNP are the newly installed parochial vicars Oliver Mazo and Marowen Adona. Opiniano said that it is quite financially difficult for the parish to lead the fiesta celebration however the church is focused solely on the events essential to the spirit of the fiesta the religious activities. He explained that having no hermano mayor is less taxing for the church especially when there are things that are not clarified to the hermano mayor for which he is fazed or he or she might have taken for granted. Rev. Fr. Gilbert Urbina, the Liturgist of the Archdiocese of Palo and one of those who conducted a thorough research on the historicity of the Balyu-an Rites, suggested that the authorities of SNP could rather give more emphasis on the Feast Day fluvial and land processions rather than the Balyu-an. He divulged that per their research, there is nothing in the history books that specifically pronounced the Balyu-an occurrence. Boldly branding such exchange of a superior image of the Sto. Nio from Barrio Buscada in Basey to the inferior one of SNP in Tacloban as condescending to the Baseynons, he challenged the local church to rather put effort for better preparation of the processions than the Balyuan Rites. In response to this issue, Opiniano stated that though the details of the Balyu-an Rites may not be accurate and its historicity debatable, the Balyu-an serves as awakening of the devotion among Taclobanons and Baseynons that the Sto. Nio is the same yesterday, today and forever. He also said that it could be possible too that there was an exchange the initial intention of

ON HER last workday in office, Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia told incoming governor Hilario Davide III his administration will have about P791 million cash and P28.1 billion in assets when it starts on Monday. But he also faces the challenge of developing some Capitol-owned properties, like a sprawling former military camp in Lahug, and collecting from thousands of families occupying provincial lots in Cebu City. Garcia delivered a detailed presentation, following to the letter a memorandum about the transition in local governments, which Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas issued last April 18. Before she addressed the mayors, Capitol officials and family members in the social hall, Garcia also gave Davide the provincial seal and a personal gift, a painting of the Sto. Nio. Davide surprised the crowd with the brevity of his remarks. Thank you very much Governor Garcia, he said. God bless all of us and God bless you. Also yesterday, 26 checks for a total of P72.9 million, intended for second district towns, were processed but eventually cancelled. Dumanjug would have received the biggest share, at P38.9 million. The amounts were supposed to be sourced from the Priority Development Assistance Fund of Rep. Pablo Garcia. Detailed Governor Garcia, who began her first term in 2004, succeeding her father who served for nine years, presented a detailed report in yesterdays turnover ceremony.
She had hoped to turn over the Province to a younger brother, Rep. Pablo John Garcia. But Davide, who lost to Gwen in 2010, defeated Pablo John last May 13. A probable factor in that loss was the governors suspension for six months, which coincided with the campaign period. DILG enforced the suspension as a penalty in an administrative case that then Vice Gov. Greg Sanchez filed in 2010, but which got resolved after his death. After Garcias formal turnover yesterday, the Capitols internal audit services released 26 checks to the accounting office, intended for Cebus second district local government units. The checks, issued by the Office of the Governor, pass through the budget office, then internal audit, before these go to the Provincial Accounting Office. From there, these were supposed to go to the cash disbursement division, before being deposited in the Capitols banks. to page 19
